Influence of Joint Spacing to Rock Slope Stability (절리 간격이 암반 사면의 안정성에 미치는 영향)

  • Characteristics of joint orientation, length, spacing and their distribution are very important factors for slope stability, Especially, the effect of joint spacing is an essential factor of slope stability. This study is to analyze the effect of joint spacing in cases of sliding and toppling, which is a typical failure mode. Joint spacing can divided into vertical spacing(spacing) and horizontal spacing(gap). And then, the spacing/length ratio of joint directly affect rock slope failure. When the ratio is below 0.05, the possibility of failure is rapidly increased. In case of toppling, the possibility of failure depends on the ratio of spacing to height of slope ratio slope. As the ratio decreases, the possibility of toppling failure increased. The critical ratio of spacing to height of slope is determined by the dip angle of the slope and the orientation of joint sets.

Tribological Behavior of Boundary Lubricated Sliding Surfaces Using Three Different Spacing of Surface Profiles

  • The ball-on-disk type sliding tests with boundary lubricated steels were carried out to verify the effect of initial spacing in surface profiles on wear and scuffing. Three kinds of surface spacing, which are closely related with initial surface micro-cracks on sliding surfaces, were produced on AISI 1045 steel surfaces using different grinding and polishing processes. Frictional forces and time to scuffing were measured, and the shape and amount of wear particles were analyzed to compare the with original surface profiles. From the tests, it was confirmed that the size of wear particles are related closely to the original spacing of the surface profile. The time to failure and amount of wear were sensitive to the surface spacing. The wider surface spacing shows much longer sliding life and smaller amount of wear than the others. Time to scuffing was increased with increasing surface pro(lie spacing. The size of wear particles increased while the wear and wear rate K were decreased with an increase in surface spacing. After the sliding tests, surface cracks of inner parts of the wear track formed due to scuffing were observed and compared among the specimens having the different surface spacing.

The Optimal Spacing of Speed Humps in Traffic Calming Areas (교통정온화 구역 과속방지턱 최적 설치간격)

  • PURPOSES : This study aims to suggest the optimal spacing between speed humps which is placed at traffic calming areas including pedestrian priority zones, school zones, and residential areas. METHODS: The study measured the operating speed of vehicles passing through two successive humps by using laser gun in 0.2 seconds interval, and analysed the basic statistical characteristics of speeds data to have an insight on the relationship between spacing and speed. Assumption was made to derive the maximum spacing within which two successive humps influence each other. RESULTS: The statistically significant model explaining the relationship between spacing and 85th percentile speed of vehicles was derived as well as the maximum spacing maintained in order to take the benefits of successive installation of humps. CONCLUSIONS: Spacing of 20 meters was suggested to achieve the widely accepted target speed of 30 km/h in traffic calming zone, and spacing of 70 meters was suggested as a maximum spacing. The comparison across the studies were made and empirical reasoning the difference of results between studies was discussed as well as the future studies.

Interaction of burning droplets with internal circulation (내부순환유동을 고려한 연소하는 액적들의 상호작용)

  • The burning characteristics of interacting droplets with internal circulation in a convective flow are numerically investigated at various Reynolds numbers. The transient combustion of 2-dimensionally arranged droplets, both the fixed droplet distances of 5 radii to 40 radii horizontally and 4 radii to 24 radii vertically, is studied. The results obtained from the present numerical analysis reveal that the transient flame configuration and retardation of droplet internal motion with the horizontal or vertical droplet spacing substantially influence lifetime of interacting droplets. At a low Reynolds number, lifetime of the two droplets with decreasing horizontal droplet spacing increases monotonically, whereas their lifetime with decreasing vertical droplet spacing decreases due to flow acceleration. This flow acceleration effect is reversed when the vertical droplet spacing is smaller than 5 radii in which decreasing flame penetration depth causes the reduction of heat transfer from flame to droplets. At a high Reynolds number, however, lifetime of the first droplet is hardly affected by either the horizontal droplet spacing or flow acceleration effect. Lifetime with decreasing vertical droplet spacing increases due to reduction of flame penetration depth. Lifetime of interacting droplets exhibits a strong dependence on Reynolds number, the horizontal droplet spacing and the vertical droplet spacing and can be con-elated well with these conditions to that of single burning droplet.

Effect of Chip Spacing in a Multichip Module on the Heat Transfer for Paraffin Slurry Flow

  • The experiments were conducted by using water and paraffin slurry to investigate the effect of a chip spacing in the multichip module on the cooling characteristics from an in-line $4{\times}3$ array of discrete heat sources which were flush mounted on the top wall of a channel. The experimental parameters were chip spacing in a multichip module, heat flux of simulated VLSI chip, mass fraction of paraffin slurry, and channel Reynolds number. The removable heat flux at the same chip surface temperature decreased as the chip spacing decreased at the first and fourth rows. The local heat transfer coefficients for the paraffin slurry were larger than those for water, and the chip spacing on the local heat transfer coefficients for paraffin slurry influenced less than that for water. The enhancement factor for paraffin slurry showed the largest value at a mass fraction of 5% regardless of the chip spacing, and the enhancement factors increased as the chip spacing decreased. This means that the paraffin slurry is more effective than water for cooling of the highly integrated multichip module.

  • This paper presents a method for inter-sheet spacing control in a flexible media handling device. In order to verify the performance of inter-sheet spacing control by experiment, system of section structure is introduced in the first place. In the introduced system, each section is driven by different servo motor for independent section freedom. And suitable inter-sheet spacing control algorithm that is more optimal than conventional inter-sheet spacing control algorithm is proposed. Finally experiments are performed to confirm the performance of inter-sheet spacing control. And two inter-sheet spacing control algorithms, conventional and proposed, are compared with each other.

Korean automatic spacing using pretrained transformer encoder and analysis

  • Automatic spacing in Korean is used to correct spacing units in a given input sentence. The demand for automatic spacing has been increasing owing to frequent incorrect spacing in recent media, such as the Internet and mobile networks. Therefore, herein, we propose a transformer encoder that reads a sentence bidirectionally and can be pretrained using an out-of-task corpus. Notably, our model exhibited the highest character accuracy (98.42%) among the existing automatic spacing models for Korean. We experimentally validated the effectiveness of bidirectional encoding and pretraining for automatic spacing in Korean. Moreover, we conclude that pretraining is more important than fine-tuning and data size.

Proposal of Spacing Distribution Index Reflected Actual Air Void Characteristics in Concrete (콘크리트의 실제 공극구조 특성을 반영한 간격분포지수 제안)

  • Spacing factor proposed by Power is a concept of averaging air void spacing composed of geometric models. Thus, there's a limitation on simulating actual air void characteristics in concrete. This study presents SDI(spacing distribution index) to overcome the limitation of spacing factor. SDI is also evaluated through comparing SDI with SF(spacing factor). In this study, it was confirmed that SF decreased due to increasing air-entrainer content but SDI increased. This occurs because SDI is the area of spacing distribution curve and SDI increases with increasing the frequency of spacing. SDI is evaluated to have better coverage below $300{\mu}m$ of SF so that determination of critical point of SDI above 80% of durability index can be easily obtained with more reliability. SDI is the area of spacing distribution curve and reflects actual air void characteristics in concrete. A comparative study of SDI and results of freeze-thaw test will be performed later.

Response of Soybean (Glycine max L.) to Subsurface Drip Irrigation with Different Dripline Placements at a Sandy-loam Soil

  • Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) system is considered one of the most effective methods for water application. A 2-year field study was conducted to investigate the effect of SDI systems with various dripline spacing (0.7 or 1.4 m) and position (under furrow or ridge) on soybean (Glycine max L.) production at a sandy-loam soil in Miryang, South Korea. For 2016-2017, average grain yield in SDI irrigated plots, $3.16Mg\;ha^{-1}$, was statistically greater than rainfed irrigated plot ($2.63Mg\;ha^{-1}$). Soybean grain yield averaged $3.25Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for the 0.7 m dripline spacing and $3.07Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for the 1.4 m spacing for the two-year period compared to a rainfed irrigated average of $2.63Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for the same period. Soybean treated with SDI system had significantly greater values of normalized difference vegetation index and stomatal conductance, indicating that soybean plants in SDI plots had greater photosynthetic and stomatal activity due to the higher water availability in soil. Irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) was greatest in the plot of 0.7 m spacing installed under ridge position than any other plot across growing season. Average soil water content in plots with 0.7 m dripline spacing was $0.21m^3\;m^{-3}$ at 5 cm depth layer, which was 45% greater compared to the plots with 1.4 m spacing, even though the gross irrigation amounts were greater in 1.4 m spacing plots. It is concluded that wide dripline spacing (1.4 m) is probably the more economical installation design for SDI system compared to 0.7 m spacing in this study soil because the initial cost for dripline may be reduced with wide spacing design, even though the IWUE is greater in the plot of 0.7 m dripline spacing.

The Effects of Droplet Arrangement on the Vaporization and Combustion Characteristics of Liquid Fuel Droplets (액체 연료 액적들의 배열이 증발 및 연소특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of present study is to understand the interaction of burning droplets in air stream for various droplet arrangement. The unsteady combustion of linearly arranged droplets with a convective flow has been studied numerically. The droplets with spacing of $5R_0\;to\;40R_0$ horizontally and with spacing of $4R_0\;to\;16R_0$ vertically are studied. The effects of Reynolds number, horizontal spacing, and vertical spacing on the interaction of burning droplets are examined. The results indicate that the droplet burning behavior is influenced by Reynolds number and relative location of droplets in the array. The interaction of droplets is increased for arrays with smaller droplet spacing. The vaporization of droplets in the array is varied with both horizontal and vertical spacing exponentially.
