  • The spacer grids in nuclear fuel assembly locate and align the fuel rods with respect to each other. They provide axial and lateral restraint against an excessive rod motion mainly caused by coolant flow. It is understood that each rod Is supported by multiple spacer grid. In such a case, it is important to determine spacer grid span so as to avoid resonance between the natural frequency of the fuel rods and excitation frequency. Actually dynamic characteristics of the fuel rods can be improved by assigning adequate spacer grid locations. When a dynamic performance of the structure is to be improved, design sensitivity analysis plays an important role as like many structural redesign problems. In this work, a shape design concept, different from conventional design, was applied to the problem. According to the theory shape can be a design parameter and optimal shape design can be found. This study concentrates on eigenvalue design sensitivity of the fuel rod supported by multiple spacer grids to determine optimal spacer grids positions.

  • The purpose of this papery is to introduce a new spacer damper's design for the bundle transmission lines network. It has the design, the main characteristics and advantage of this new kind of spacer damper. To reply to this problems, France, Japan and other countries had developed through many years a spacer damper with an automatic system. While the automatic clamping device are free of maintenance such as fatigue Break and aeolian vibration, imported price are so high. Now it is necessary to design, manufacture and certificate these automatic clamping device spacer damper.

  • A spacer grid, which is one of the most important structural components in a PWR fuel assembly, supports its fuel rods laterally and vertically. Based on in-house design experience, scrutiny of the design features of advanced nuclear fuels and the patents of other spacer grids, KAERI has devised its own spacer grid shapes and acquired patents. In this study, a performance evaluation of KAERI's spacer grid shapes was carried out from mechanical/structural and thermohydraulic view points. A comparative performance evaluation of commercial spacer grid shapes was also carried out. The comparisons addressed the spring characteristics, fuel rod vibration characteristics, fretting wear resistance, impact strength characteristics, CHF enhancement, and the pressure drop level of the spacer grid shapes. The results show that the performances of KAERI's spacer grid shapes are as good as or better than those of the commercial spacer grid shapes.

  • Spacer Dampers must be carefully designed and tested. Because it can protect conductors from conductor oscillations due to winds and electrical forces. If the spacer damper has any problems in itself, it may cause extensive damage to the transmission lines. This paper suggests a design method and considerations of spacer damper for bundled conductor transmission lines.

  • Spacer is used between main tank and auxiliary tank for on load tap changer in gas insulated power transformer. This paper deals with electrical design of spacer and discusses different analysis method of between 2D FEM(finite element method) and 3D FEM. To design spacer, we modeled structure of two kind of coaxial cylinders of spacer conductors and analysised electric field of spacer at impulse and induced test voltage condition. Spacer has 13 conductors and electric field was changed according to arrangement of conductors. We could find out arrangement of conductors at which electric stress is minimum. And this arrangement was satisfied with actual test conditions.

  • A novel column spacer with concaved top surface has been made through conventional photolithography process. The mechanical characteristics of this spacer were also investigated by using load-unload cycle test. According to the experimental results, the deformation ratio of this new designed spacer is larger than that of conventional column spacers about two times in the lower loading stage. At the higher loading stage there is no obviously difference in deformation ratio between the new designed spacer and the conventional spacer.

  • This Paper describes an algorithm for the design of axi-symmetrical spacer under specified field conditions. The electric field alas been calculated by combination method of Integral Equation Method(IEM) and Charge Simulation Method(CSM). The contour of spacer is represented with NURB(Non-Uniform Rational B-spline) curve of which effectiveness has been proved. This algorithm introduces a design process in the aspect of electrical field, when a spacer in airtight cylinder is designed. Also various field conditions for obtaining optical shapes have been proposed. Due to the algorithm, the entire process shows a stable convergence. Both tangential and total electrical field are taken into consideration as specified field criteria.

  • A spacer grid, which supports nuclear fuel rods laterally and vertically with a friction grip, is one of the most important structural components in a PWR fuel. The form of grid strap and supporting parts such as grid spring and dimple is known to be closely related with the mechanical/structural performance of spacer grid and nuclear fuel assembly. In this study, reviewing various research results for enhancing the performance of the spacer grid, some structural design considerations and research directions on the spacer grid assembly are suggested for further study.

  • The spacer grid set is a component in the nuclear fuel assembly. The set supports the fuel rods safely. Therefore, the spacer grid set should have sufficient strength for the external impact forces such as earthquake. The fretting wear occurs between the spring of the fuel rod and the spacer grid due to flow-induced vibration. Conceptual design of the spacer grid set is performed based on the Independence Axiom of axiomatic design. Two functional requirements are defined for the impact load and the fretting wear, and corresponding design parameters are selected. The overall flow of design is defined according to the application of axiomatic design. Design for the impact load is carried out by using nonlinear dynamic analysis to determine the length of the dimple. Topology optimization is carried out to determine a new configuration of the spring. The fretting wear is reduced by shape optimization using the homology theory. The deformation of a structure is called homologous if a given geometrical relationship holds before, during, and after the deformation. In the design to reduce the fretting wear, the deformed shape of the spring should be the same as that of the fuel rod. This condition is transformed to a function and considered as a constraint in the shape optimization process. The fretting wear is expected to be reduced due to the homology constraint. The objective function is minimizing the maximum stress to allow a slight plastic deformation. Shape optimization results are confirmed through nonlinear static analysis.
