  • The aim of this study is to elucidate the meaning of "less is more" by examining the design process of the Farnsworth House and its spatial composition. In order to find out what constitutes "less" and "more", Mies' sketches and drawings were reviewed, and the vision of the architect and the owner, and the responses from the critics were studied. As a matter of fact, these seemingly contradictory concepts the "less" and the "more" are relative terms that complement each other. The concept of "less" describes an enclosure of space, fixed, inflexible and invariable space that leaves no room for change. On the other hand, the term "more" represents an openness of space, free, flexible, and variable space. Mies tried to minimize "less" element when designing the interior of the Farnsworth House, and he did so by eliminating columns and walls. On the contrary, by using only fixed core, he created a "more" space, where the effects of flexible and open qualities are maximized. However, duality and contradiction rising from glass external wall and portico in the Farnsworth House raise a critical issue in this "less is more" discourse. The role of these parts of the house is rather contradictory, and the glass wall and the portico hold both "less" and "more" elements. Unlike its relatively simple composition of space, the Farnsworth House encompasses many complex and contradictory ideas that leave room for wide scope of exploration and various interpretations.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the general patterns of the floor plans and space of Usonian house which designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. this thesis can be summarized as follows : 1) F.L.Wright's houses mostly used simple geometric shapes as the basis for most of his architectural designs. In his early works, his typical floor plans were square or rectangular shapes, which gradually were transformed into various kinds of shape to make the adjustment of location of the site and shape. 2) The general patterns of floor plans of his U-houses were L-shaped or straight shaped using a $4{\times}4$ grid system. Most of U-houses consisted of 3 space: living room, workspace(Kitchen) & dining, and bedroom. Among them, a workspace worked as core role in each house. 3) Even though solid wall is the opposite concept of the transparent glass but most U-houses were designed to have solid walls on one side to provide a gallery space(to secure habitability of resident) and transparent glass walls used on the other side to connect between interior space and natural space of exterior. 4) The cantilever have not been used before Usonian house but F.L.Wright used it which take charge of functions as transfer space between inside space and outside space. 5) F.L.Wright saw the nature as a truth, so he thought the interior space would be natural and all houses must be able to adjust to the natural environment.

  • In line with the worldwide trend toward the protection of natural environment and economic concerns, the steel framed house is suggested for the next industrialized generatiov. In Korea, untrustworthiness of concrete structured apartment has led to the development of alternative building material and technology. POSCO has constructed the model steel house to assess the marketability of steel framed house in Korea. To collect basic data required to design the steel framed house suitable to Korean life pattern and housing needs, professional evaluation of model steel house was conducted. The goal of this study is to propose alternative plan and ideas on the interior space planning based upon the evaluation from women housing professionals. Our analysis reveals that the habitability of steel house is equal or superior to that of traditional houses. But in the interiior sapce planning, the certain aspects of steel houses is not suitable to Korean likfe style: the lack of storage space and utility space, inflexibility of plav. We conclude that given its cost efficiency and environmental concern, steel house has potential to take an important part in future Korean housing.

  • Despite its relatively small size, at least compared to other architectural programs, the house figures large in the cultural imagination. Closely identified with the individual and nuclear family, it has been frequently considered as an expression of widely held, even universal, values. Conversely, the private house has also been emblematic of more subjective desires, that change not only from person to person but from generation to generation. Certain conclusions can be drawn about the status of the private house at the end of the century, both as cultural invention and as a product of the autonomous discipline of architecture. The contemporary loftlike living space is similarly associated with work, given its emergence as an alternative home for individuals wanting space in which to live and work. In the case of what might be called the "un-private house", it is ofen a digital presence and the change of family system. This study was conducted to define the un-private house through public/private. The architectural characteristics of un-private house are as follows; 1) Alternatives- large open space with multiple function and collective free plan 2) Dematerialization- steel and glass with visual openness and ambiguity 3) Digital & Interfaces- fold and screen using technology and program. Especially, the un-private house is designed to provide individuals with emotional, superficial, and synergistic space, focusing on the personal life-style.
