Thermal vacuum test should be performed prior to launch to verify satellites' functionality in a harsh space environment which is represented by extremely cold temperatures and vacuum conditions. A thermal vacuum chamber which consists of a vacuum vessel, a pumping system, and a thermal control system are used to perform thermal vacuum tests of a satellite system and its components. A cryogenic blower is a core component of the closed loop thermal control system for thermal vacuum chambers. This paper describes the fan design of the cryogenic blower, the design of the thermal protection interface between the driving part and the fluid part, which were verified by thermal and structural analyses. The performance of the cryogenic blower is confirmed by similarity test on the test bench.

A closed loop thermal control system simulates space thermal environment to verify the satellites' functionality in extremely cold/hot temperature. It is composed of a cryogenic blower, thermal shroud, heater, cryogenic valves. This paper presents an overview of closed loop thermal control system's design parameter and test results for control parameter. A capacity of blower is calculated through energy balance equation and an advantage/disadvantage for a shroud material and a type was analysed. The thermal control system is controlled by a constant density of fluid in the system. A requested performance of closed loop thermal control system was verified by measuring a homogeneity and stability of shroud through control parameter such as density and RPM of blower.

On-orbit thermal environment test of KOMPSAT was performed in early 1999. An analysis of the test data are addressed in this paper. For the thermal-environmental simulation of spacecraft bus, an artificial heating through the radiator zones and onto some critical heat-dissipating electronic boxes was made by Absorbed-heat Flux Method. Test data obtained in terms of temperature history were reduced into flight heater duty cycles and converted into the total electrical power required for spacecraft thermal control. Verification result of flight heaters dedicated to the bus thermal control is presented. Additionally, an exhaustive heating-control process for maintaining the spacecraft thermally safe and for realistic simulation of the orbital-thermal environment during the test are graphically shown. Qualitative suggestions to post-test model correlation are given in consequency of the analysis.

The FPGA is used to the high speed digital satellite communication on the Digital Signal Process Unit of the next generation GEO communication satellite. The high capacity FPGA has the high power dissipation and it is difficult to satisfy the derating requirement of temperature. This matter is the major factor to degrade the equipment life and reliability. The thermal control at the equipment level has been worked through thermal conduction in the space environment. The FPGA of CCGA or BGA package type was mounted on printed circuit board, but the PCB has low efficient to the thermal control. For the FPGA heat dissipation, the heat sink was applied between part lid and housing of equipment and the performance of heat sink was confirmed via thermal vacuum test under the condition of space qualification level. The FPGA of high power dissipation has been difficult to apply for space application, but FPGA with heat sink could be used to space application with the derating temperature margin.

Melting and icing process of the PCMTCU(Phase Change Material Thermal Control Unit) installed on the NEXTSat-2, which is scheduled to be launched in the second half, was investigated through the results of satellite-level TVT(Thermal Vacuum Test). As a result of the test, it was confirmed that the latent heat of PCM contributes to the temperature stabilization of the heating components. The thermal model for numerical analysis of the PCMTCU was correlated to acquire a reasonable degree of accuracy using the collected temperature measurements during TVT. The periodic temperature variation of the PCMTCU in normal on-orbit operation was predicted with the correlated thermal model, and the quantitative contribution of the PCM on the thermal energy management was evaluated with the liquid fraction. It will receive flight telemetry from the NEXTSat-2 after the launch, and complete the space verification of the PCMTCU.

Nowadays membrane material is widely used for large indoor spaces and long spaces such as traditional market. Thermal insulation and sound field control performance is considered as a main properties for design of such buildings. In this paper sound absorption and thermal insulation properties of membrane material was investigated. Firstly, normal incidence sound absorption coefficient of 10 kinds of glass wool textiles showed that sound absorption coefficient was increased in proportion of thickness and surface density of textile. Sound absorption coefficient of 4 kinds of sound absorptive inner membrane with outer membrane was tested in the reverberation chamber. Sound absorption coefficient of mid frequency range was about 0.4 ~ 0.6. Also, sound absorption coefficient was changed by the air space behind the membrane material. Secondly, sound field control performance was investigated using mock-up space. By the installation of sound absorption membrane material, reverberation time was decreased and speech intelligibility was increased. Finally, thermal resistance and room temperature in two kinds of mock-up rooms were tested, simultaneously. Results of thermal properties showed thermal insulation properties ware increased by adding inner membrane material underneath the outer membrane.

Spaceborne pulse tube-type cryogenic compressors are widely used for space applications. To guarantee cooling performance of the compressor, mission life time and micor-vibration stability, suitable thermal control of compressor is required. Micro-vibration of the compressor is the one of the sources to degrade the pointing performance of observation satellite. In the present work, on-orbit thermal design of compressor in order not to degrade the performance of micro-vibration isolation system keeping the thermal control performance has been proposed and investigated through thermo-mechanical analysis.
An absorbed heat-flux method for ground simulation of on-orbit thermal environment of satellite is addressed in this paper. For satellite ground test, high vacuum and extremely low temperature of deep space are achieved by space simulation chamber, while spatial environmental heating is simulated by employing the absorbed heat-flux method. The methodology is explained in detail with test requirement and setup implemented on a satellite. Developed heat-load control system is presented with an adjusted PID-control logic and the system schematic realized is shown. A practical and successful application of the heat simulation method to KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-purpose Satellite)thermal environmental test is demonstrated, finally.

This paper describes the design and test of the thermal control and fire safety system for thermal control and the fire/explosion prevention of inside the compartment during the preparation and operation of the space launch vehicle at the launch pad. The system considered here is for the test launch vehicle which is being developed as part of the development of the Korean Space launch vehicle-II. This system applies the high pressure system based on the heritage of Naro launch vehicle. The selection of thermal control and fire safety system from high pressure and low pressure system is done in consideration of the characteristics of the launch pad gas supply system and the characteristics of launch vehicle, and the system configuration is also changed accordingly. As a result, it has been confirmed that the developed system satisfies the initial design conditions through the test. Moreover the system will be applied to the development of the Korean launch vehicle in the future.
This study shows how the water space outside the housing impacts the indoor thermal environment. CFD simulation was used for this experiment to analyze the interior environment focusing on the effect of temperature control and the thermal comfort. A shape of perfect square, which creates the very basic space formation, was used and the simulation was processed looking at the size, distance, and the location of the water space. The results of the experiment are as follows. Firstly, introducing a water space with the same floor area size of the simulation model decreased the indoor temperature by 1 Celsius (3.72%). It was determined the interior environment was considered as a comfort zone when the water space was greater than 70% of the floor area. Secondly, there was not much influence to the level of thermal comfort of the interior environment when the distance to the water space from the housing was greater than 2 meters. Lastly, interpreting the location of water space, the effect of controlling the total areas' temperature was the greatest following with the surrounding of the formation. There barely was any change to the temperature considering the side and the rear of the area.
