  • A long-term nationwide nonpoint-source pollution monitoring program was initiated by the Ministry of Environment Republic of Korea (ME) in 2007. Monitoring devices including rain gauges, flow meters, and automatic samplers were installed in monitoring sites to collect dynamic runoff data in 2008-2009. More than 10 rainfall events with three or more antecedent dry days were monitored per year. More than 10 samples were collected and analyzed per event. So far, five land use types (single family, apartments, education facilities, power plants, and other public facilities) have been monitored 23 to 24 times each. Characterization of the runoff from different land use types will aid unit load estimation in Korea and hopefully in other countries with similar land use. The monitoring results will be reported regularly at national and international levels.

  • Recently, there are difficulties in operating brachtherapy machine in the radiotherapy department because of increasing the source price with decreasing nuclear reactor in the world. The development and technical features of the Ir-192 HDR sources (4.5 mm, 1.1 mm in diameter) in Korea were described in this report. We expect that this report will be helpful for hospitals to make the long-term plan for operating and managing HDR brachytherapy machine.

  • This paper describes Four Switch Three-Phase Z-Source rectifier with reduced value capacitors. This configuration has some advantages in term of small size of the circuit. The rectifier has buck-boost function by shoot-through state. Also, the rectifier has the advantage of decreasing inrush current in start-up and transient states. In order to reduce harmonics PWM modulation technique with a variable index has been suggested. Four Switch Three-Phase Z-Source rectifier with reduced value capacitors can output stable DC. Principles and dynamics of the system are discussed in detail.

  • The concentration levels of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) in ambient air have been investigated from a monitoring station located in Yang Jae district of Seoul, Korea for a long-term period covering 1997 through 2002. The mean concentration of Hg, if computed based on its hourly measurement data for this six-year period, was $5.32\pm3.53 ng m^{-3} (N = 27,170)$. The inspection of the diurnal distribution patterns indicated the presence of notably high concentration levels during nighttime relative to daytime (e.g., the mean hourly value as high as $9 ng m^{-3}$ in winter nighttime). When divided seasonally, the highest mean of $6.12 ng m^{-3}$ was also observed during winter followed by spring, fall, and summer. The results of our analysis confirmed the relative dominance of winter (seasonally) or nighttime (diurnally), while exhibiting a complicated trend on a long-term basis. Examination of our data over a different temporal scale consistently indicated that dynamic changes in Hg concentrations occurred through time in line with changes in the strength and diversity of the source processes. It is thus acknowledged that the presence of unusually high Hg levels is the consequence of intense man-made activities, while such signatures can vary in a competitive manner.

  • This study was analyzed the long term performance of the demonstration system for solar energy desalination in Jeju. we used a solar thermal system as heat source of the single-stage fresh water generator with plate-type heat exchangers and a photovoltaic power system as electric source for hydraulic pumps. The demonstration system was designed and installed at Jeju-island in 2006. The system was comprised of the desalination unit with daily fresh water capacity designed as $2m^3$ a $120m^2$ evacuated tubular solar collector to supply the heat, a $6m^3$ heat storage tank, and a 5kW photovoltaic power generation to supply the electricity of hydraulic pumps for the heat medium fluids. Through the operation during about 3 years, In a clear day more than $400W/m^2$, the daily fresh water showed to produce more than about 500liter, and from January, 2007 to March, 2009 for 3 years, solar irradiance daily averaged was measured $370W/m^2$, the daily fresh water yield showed that can be produced about 330liter.

  • The dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) is used to solve the Graetz problem of laminar flow inside circular duct. In this method the domain integral tenn of boundary integral equation resulting from source term of governing equation is transformed into equivalent boundary-only integrals by using the radial basis interpolation function, and therefore complicate domain discretization procedure Is completely removed. Velocity profile is obtained by solving the momentum equation first and then, using this velocities as Input data, energy equation Is solved to get the temperature profile by advancing from duct entrance through the axial direction marching scheme. DRBEM solution is tested for the uniform temperature and heat flux boundary condition cases. Local Nusselt number, mixed mean temperature and temperature profile inside duct at each dimensionless axial location are obtained and compared with exact solutions for the accuracy test Solutions arc in good agreement at the entry region as well as fully developed region of circular duct, and their accuracy are verified from error analysis.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient numerical method for multiphase image segmentation using a multiphase-field model. The method combines the vector-valued Allen-Cahn phase-field equation with initial data fitting terms containing prescribed interface width and fidelity constants. An efficient numerical solution is achieved using the recently developed hybrid operator splitting method for the vector-valued Allen-Cahn phase-field equation. We split the modified vector-valued Allen-Cahn equation into a nonlinear equation and a linear diffusion equation with a source term. The linear diffusion equation is discretized using an implicit scheme and the resulting implicit discrete system of equations is solved by a multigrid method. The nonlinear equation is solved semi-analytically using a closed-form solution. And by treating the source term of the linear diffusion equation explicitly, we solve the modified vector-valued Allen-Cahn equation in a decoupled way. By decoupling the governing equation, we can speed up the segmentation process with multiple phases. We perform some characteristic numerical experiments for multiphase image segmentation.

  • An efficient solution method for harmonic balance techniques with Fourier transform is presented for periodic unsteady flow problems. The present partially-implicit harmonic balance treats the flux terms implicitly and the harmonic source term is solved explicitly. The convergence of the partially Implicit method is much faster than the explicit Runge-Kutta harmonic balance method. The method does not need to compute the additional flux Jacobian matrix from the implicit harmonic source term. Compared with fully implicit harmonic balance method, this partial approach turns out to have good convergence property. Oscillating flows over NACA0012 airfoil are considered to verify the method and to compare with results of explicit R-K(Runge-Kutta) and dual time stepping methods.

  • The analytical repository source term (REPS) computer code is developed for the safety assessment of radioactive waste geologic repository. For reliable prediction of the leach rates for various radionuclides, degradation of concrete structures, corrosion rate of waste container, degree of corrosion on the container surface, and the characteristics of radionuclides are considered in this REPS code. For the validation of the radionuclide leach rates predicted by the REPS model, the calculated leach rates of Cs-137, Sr-85, and Co-60 are compared with two reported leaching test results. Cesium and strontium leach congruently, and the leaching test results of these species can be reproduced by the congruent leaching model included in the REPS model. In case of cobalt, the solid diffusion model is in good agreement with the leaching test results.

  • Quantification of uncertainties in the source term estimations by a large computer code, such as MELCOR and MAAP, is an essential process of the current Probabilistic safety assessment. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the applicability of a combined procedure of the response surface method (RSM) based on input determined from a statistical design and the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) technique for the uncertainty analysis of CsI release fractions under a Hypothetical severe accident sequence of a station blackout at Younggwang nuclear power plant using MAAP3. OB code as a benchmark problem. On the basis of the results obtained in the present work, the RSM is recommended to be used as a principal tool for an overall uncertainty analysis in source term quantifications, while using the LHS in the calculations of standardized regression coefficients (SRC) and standardized rank regression coefficient (SRRC) to determine the subset of the most important input parameters in the final screening step and to check the cumulative distribution functions obtained by RSM. Verification of the response surface model for its sufficient accuracy is a prerequisite for the reliability of the final results that can be obtained by the combined procedure proposed in the present work.
