Relationship of Initial Density, Biomass and Tuber Productivity of Scirpus planiculmis in the Nakdong River Estuary (낙동강 하구 새섬매자기 초기밀도, 생체량과 괴경량의 관계)

  • Scirpus planiculmis dominated in Nakdong river estuary is known as food for birds visiting to Nakdong river estuary and plays an important role in material cycle and food web, while repeating growth and production, decomposition process in 1-year interval. Therefore, if it is able to predict effectively biomass or tuber production of Scirpus planiculmis which is food source for estuarine organisms or birds, it can provide very useful information on the Nakdong river estuary management. In this study, regression equation that can predict the tuber production, food for birds, was obtained using initial density of Scirpus planiculmis that can minimize the disturbance of ecosystem and is faster and easier. The correlation analysis results show that density, biomass and tuber production have liner relationship(p<0.001) with 0.6103~0.9950 of correlation coefficients. In addition, the regression equations have high coefficients of determination of 0.3696~0.7145 and it shows that it is able to predict biomass or tuber production while using the estimated regression equation obtained from relationship among the initial density, biomass and tuber production. The results of this study are expected to utilize effectively the management of estuary ecosystem such as management on food source for migratory birds visiting to Nakdong river estuary.

Development of an Open Source-based Spatial Analysis Tool for Storm and Flood Damage (풍수해 대비 오픈소스 기반 공간분석 도구 개발)

  • Wind and flood damage caused by typhoons causes a lot of damage to the Korean Peninsula every year. In order to minimize damage, a preliminary analysis of damage estimation and evacuation routes is required for rapid decision-making. This study attempted to develop an analysis module that can provide necessary information according to the disaster stage. For use in the preparation stage, A function to check past typhoon routes and past damage information similar to typhoon routes heading north, a function to extract isolated dangerous areas, and a function to extract reservoir collapse areas were developed. For use in the early stages of response and recovery, a function to extract the expected flooding range considering the current flooding depth, a function to analyze expected damage information on population, buildings, farmland, and a function to provide evacuation information were included. In addition, an automated web map creation method was proposed to express the analysis results. The analysis function was developed and modularized based on Python open source, and the web display function was implemented based on JavaScript. The tools developed in this study are expected to be efficiently used for rapid decision-making in the early stages of monitoring against storm and flood damage.

Development of Prediction Model for Sugar Content of Strawberry Using NIR Spectroscopy (근적외선 분광을 이용한 딸기의 당도예측모델 개발)

  • This study was performed to develop a prediction model of sugar content for strawberry. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been prevailed for on-line and portable applications for non-invasive quality assessment of intact fruit. This work presents effects of illumination method and coating of reflection surface of light source on prediction result of sugar content. Effect of preprocessing methods was also examined. A low-cost commercially available VIS/NIR spectrometer was used for estimation of total soluble solids content (Brix). To predict sugar contents of strawberry, the best results were obtained with the spectrum data measured under intensive illuminations at three locations induced from the light source with fiber optic bundles. Gold coating of reflection surface of light source lamp gave favorable effect to prediction result. The best results in validation of PLSR model were $r_{SEP}$ = 0.891 and SEP = 0.443 Brix under OSC preprocessing and those of PCR were $r_{SEP}$ = 0.845, SEP $r_{SEP}$= 0.520 Brix, under no preprocessing.

Study on the Estimation of Towing Force for LNG Bunkering Barge (LNG 벙커링 바지의 예인력 산정에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the towing force for the LNG bunkering barge was investigated. Currently, LNG bunkering barge is being developed as an infrastructure for the bunkering of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), an eco-friendly energy source. In the case of the LNG bunkering barge, self-propulsion is considered through retrofit from an operating point. Therefore, the LNG bunkering barge's shape is similar to that of the ship as compared to a towed barge, so a rule of the towed barge overestimates the towing force. In order to improve accuracy, the calm water resistance was calculated using ITTC 1978 method which considers wave resistance by the Rankine source method. The added resistance in waves was calculated using the modified radiated energy method which considers the shortwave correction method of NMRI. The performance of the towing resistances through the calm water resistance and the added resistance in waves was compared to rules associated with towed barges.

  • Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (DPRK) conducted the $6^{th}$ underground nuclear test at the Punggye-ri underground nuclear test site on September 27, 2017 12 hours 30 minutes of Korean local time. Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) under U.N. announced the body wave magnitude of the event was mb 6.1 while U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)'s calculation was mb 6.3. In this study, the differences of the magnitude estimates were investigated and verified. For this purpose, a source scaling between the $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ event, which's epicenters are 200 meters apart, was performed using seismic data sets from 30 broadband stations. The relative amplitude variations of the $6^{th}$ event compared to the $5^{th}$ event in the frequency domain was analyzed through the scaling. The increased amount of the bodywave magnitude $m_b$ for the $6^{th}$ event was calculated at 1 Hz, which was compared to those from USGS and CTBTO's calculations.

  • This paper has been conducted to estimate cooling capacity of the dehumidification tower using hot water from a solar water heating system as a energy source of regeneration process when the dehumidification and drying system is applied to room cooling. A solar water heating system was operated and indoor temperature distributions were simulated according to weather conditions when the concerned solution was used to dehumidify room air in the dehumidification tower. Through this simulation researches we found th following results ; It was found that air velocity through supply and return diffusers should be controlled because it can cause uncomfort in dwelling area. It was found that in the sunny morning temperatures of dwelling area 1 and 2 are higher than those of dwelling area 3 and 4. In this research all the calculation results of heating and cooling system supported by solar water heater have confirmed that its cooling capacity could not reach PMV 0, thermal comfort.

Quantitative Estimation of Nonpoint Source Load by BASINS/HSPF (BASINS/HSPF 모형을 활용한 비점오염부하의 정량적 평가)

  • Loading of NPS pollutant was valued through simulation by using BASINS/HSPF model which can simulate runoff volume in rainfall by time. For the verification of the model, it was analyzed the scatter diagram of the simulation value and measure value of water quality and runoff volume in Dongcheon estuary. Using the built model, a study on the time-variant characteristics of runoff and water quality was simulated by being classified into four cases. The result showed the simulation value was nearly same as that of the measured runoff. In the result of fit level test for measured value and simulated value, correlation of runoff volume was computed high by average 0.86 and in the water quality items, fit level of simulation and measurements was high by BOD 0.82, T-N 0.85 and T-P 0.79.

Explaining Dividend Payout: Evidence from Malaysia's Blue-Chip Companies

  • This research investigates the explanatory factors governing the dividend payout to shareholders of blue-chip companies listed on Bursa Malaysia. In spite of continuous attention offered by empirical research on dividend payout of publicly-listed companies, paradoxically only few studies exclusively examined the explanatory factors from the perspective of blue-chip companies. Recognizing the capability of blue-chip companies to serve as a stalwart indicator of stock market condition as well as a consistent income source to shareholders, more research should be carried out for better inference on the companies' dividend payout decision. This research is using 522 observations from a sample of 18 Malaysian blue-chip companies over a 29-year period (1990 to 2019) and utilizes a panel data regression analysis for the estimation of the impact of eight factors, namely, systematic risk, leverage, free cash flow, lagged dividends, market-to-book value, profit growth, total asset turnover, and company size. Measuring dividend payout using two specifications (dividend/earnings and dividend/total assets), this research reveals that systematic risk and free cash flow have a significant and negative impact on dividend payout. Meanwhile, past year dividends, market-to-book value, profit growth, total asset turnover and company size have a significant and positive impact on dividend payout.

Using RESRAD-BUILD for Potential Radiation Dose Estimation the Korea Research Reactor-1 When It Opens to the Public as a Memorial Hall

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate and analyze the potential radiation dose that the future visitors and the cleaning staff will be exposed to when the KRR-1 reactor is converted into a memorial hall. The radiation doses were estimated using the RESRAD-BUILD software, where case, building, receptor, shielding, and source parameters were applied as the input data. Also, the basic data for the assessment of the radiation doses were determined in an indirect manner using the data on the waste generated during the decommissioning process of the reactor. The assessment results indicate that the potential radiation dose to the visitors and the cleaning staff will be less than 1 mSv, the annual dose limit for the general public. However, if anyone for a significant period of time is close to the reactor, the overall dose will increase. The radiation dose for the future visitors and the cleaning staff was determined to be lower than the annual dose limit for the general public. Given such a risk, systematic measures, such as periodic monitoring or limiting hours, are imperative.

Machine Learning-based Estimation of the Concentration of Fine Particulate Matter Using Domain Adaptation Method (Domain Adaptation 방법을 이용한 기계학습 기반의 미세먼지 농도 예측)

  • Recently, people's attention and worries about fine particulate matter have been increasing. Due to the construction and maintenance costs, there are insufficient air quality monitoring stations. As a result, people have limited information about the concentration of fine particulate matter, depending on the location. Studies have been undertaken to estimate the fine particle concentrations in areas without a measurement station. Yet there are limitations in that the estimate cannot take account of other factors that affect the concentration of fine particle. In order to solve these problems, we propose a framework for estimating the concentration of fine particulate matter of a specific area using meteorological data and traffic data. Since there are more grids without a monitor station than grids with a monitor station, we used a domain adversarial neural network based on the domain adaptation method. The features extracted from meteorological data and traffic data are learned in the network, and the air quality index of the corresponding area is then predicted by the generated model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performs better as the number of source data increases than the method using conditional random fields.
