Simple one-step synthesis of carbon nanoparticles from aliphatic alcohols and n-hexane by stable solution plasma process

  • This paper examines a simple one-step and catalyst-free method for synthesizing carbon nanoparticles from aliphatic alcohols and n-hexane with linear molecule formations by using a stable solution plasma process with a bipolar pulse and an external resistor. When the external resistor is adopted, it is observed that the current spikes are dramatically decreased, which induced production of a more stable discharge. Six aliphatic linear alcohols (methanol-hexanol) containing carbon with oxygen sources are studied as possible precursors for the massive production of carbon nanoparticles. Additional study is also carried out with the use of n-hexane containing many carbons without an oxygen source in order to enhance the formation of carbon nanoparticles and to eliminate unwanted oxygen effects. The obtained carbon nanoparticles are characterized with field emission-scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that with increasing carbon ratios in alcohol content, the synthesis rate of carbon nanoparticles is increased, whereas the size of the carbon nanoparticles is decreased. Moreover, the degree of graphitization of the carbon nanoparticles synthesized from 1-hexanol and n-hexane with a high carbon (C)/oxygen (O) ratio and low or no oxygen is observed to be greater than that of the carbon nanoparticles synthesized from the corresponding materials with a low C/O ratio.

석유계 솔벤트를 사용하는 세탁소 작업자의 노출평가 (An Evaluation of Exposure to Petroleum Based Dry Cleaning Solvent Used in Commercial Dry Cleaning Shops)

  • In previous report, we presented that petroleum based solvents used in dry cleaning shop was almost similar to stoddard solvent defined by ACGIH and NIOSH, and the occupational exposure standard of stoddard solvent could be used in total exposure assessment of those solvents. The specific aim of the this study was to evaluate of the solvent exposure used in commercial dry cleaning shops by using occupational exposure standard of stoddard solvent. We conducted first survey of 8 self-employed dry cleaning shops and 5 factory type dry cleaning shops from July to August, and second survey of the same shops from October to November in 2002. The exposure concentration to the solvent during loading and unloading activity of vented dry cleaning machine was 489.2ppm(GM), 270.3ppm(GM), respectively, which was almost excursion limit(500ppm) of ACGIH, and exceed the ceiling limit(312ppm) of NIOSH. The time-weighted average (TWA) worker exposure to the solvent was 21.3ppm(GM) at self-employed shops, 20.7ppm(GM) at factory type shops on first survey, and 31.1ppm(GM), 33.7ppm(GM), respectively on second survey. The TWA exposure concentration of workers with spotting and cleaning machine operating job was 25.4ppm(GM), which was 2.9 times higher than the TWA exposure concentration, 8.8ppm(GM) of press workers. All TWA exposure concentrations was lower than OEL(100ppm) of stoddard solvent. We found that the most heavy exposure process at dry cleaning was loading, unloading process, and the vent of dry cleaning machine was the main emission source for workers exposure to petroleum based solvent.

스테인레스 강 용접중 발생하는 망간의 발생량 및 함량변화에 관한 연구 (Generation Rate and Content Variation of Manganese in Stainless Steel Welding)

  • Manganese has a role as both toxic and essential in humans. Manganese is also an essential component in the welding because it increases the hardness and strength, prevents steel from cracking of welding part and acts as a deoxidizing agent to form a stable weld. In this study, manganese generation rate and its content was determined in flux cored arc welding on stainless steel. Domestic two products and foreign four products of flux cored wires were tested in the well designed fume generation chamber as a function of input power. Welding fume was measured by gravimetric method and metal manganese was determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrophotometer. The outer shell of the flux cored wire tube and inner flux were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy to determine their metal compositions. Manganese generation rate($FGR_{mn}$) was increased as the input power increased. It was 16.3 mg/min at the low input power, 38.1 mg/min at the optimal input power, and up to 55.4 mg/min at the high input power. This means that $FGR_{mn}$ is increased at the work place if welder raise the current and/or voltage for the high productivity. The slope coefficient of $FGR_{mn}$ was smaller than that of the generation rate of total fume(FGR). Also, the correlation coefficient of $FGR_{mn}$ was 0.65 whereas that of FGR is 0.91. $FGR_{mn}$ was equal or higher in the domestic products than that of the foreign products although FGR was similar. From the electron microscopic analytical data, we concluded that outer shell of the wire was composed mainly of iron, chromium, nickel and less than 1.2 % of manganese. There are many metal ingredients such as iron, silica, manganese, zirconium, titanium, nickel, potassium, and aluminum in the inner flux but they were not homogeneous. It was found that both $FGR_{mn}$ and content of manganese was higher and more varied in domestic flux cored wires than those of foreign products. To reduce worker exposure to fumes and hazardous component at the source, further research is needed to develop new welding filler materials that improve the quality of flux cored wire in respect to these points. Welder should keep in mind that the FGR, $FGR_{mn}$ and probably the generation rate of other hazardous metals were increased as the input power increase for the high productivity.

연료전지 차량의 냉시동성 개선을 위한 금속 분리판 표면의 바나듐 산화물 박막 제조 및 특성 분석에 관한 연구 (An Experimental Study of Synthesis and Characterization of Vanadium Oxide Thin Films Coated on Metallic Bipolar Plates for Cold-Start Enhancement of Fuel Cell Vehicles)

  • 냉시동 성능 개선은 연료전지 차량의 고분자 전해질 연료전지 발전 모듈 및 시스템의 내구성과 신뢰성 향상의 측면에서 매우 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 영하의 기후에서 연료전지 차량의 초기 구동 시금속 분리판 표면에 형성된 바나듐 산화물 박막의 자기 발열 특성을 이용하여 신속한 온도 상승 구현이 가능한 냉시동 향상 기술을 제안하고, 실험적 방법을 통해 그 적용 가능성을 검증하였다. 졸-겔 침지 법에 의해 제조된 바나듐 산화물 박막의 특성 평가를 위해 X 선 회절, 광전자 분광, 전자 주사 현미경을 이용한 화합물 조성 및 미세구조 분석, 4-탐침법을 이용한 $-20{\sim}80^{\circ}C$의 온도 구간에서의 온도-저항 이력 특성 분석을 각각 수행하였다. 본 실험 결과, 냉시동 조건에서 박막의 자기 발열량은 연료전지 내부의 생성 수 결빙 방지에 필요한 열 에너지를 모두 충족시킬 수 있음을 확인하였다.

휘발성 유기화합물 제거를 위한 저온 vacuum swing adsorption 공정의 실용화 연구 (Practical Study of Low-temperature Vacuum Swing Adsorption Process for VOCs Removal)

  • 본 연구에서는 주요한 휘발성 유기화합물의 발생원인 도장공장 중에서 중소규모의 공장에 적용 가능한 저온 vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) 기술에 대하여 연구하였다. 저온 VSA 기술이란 기존의 thermal swing adsorption (TSA)의 단점을 보완하기 위하여 저온($60{\sim}90^{\circ}C$)에서 감압하여 흡착질을 탈착하는 방식이다. 국내에서 시판되고 있는 상용 활성탄을 이용하여 대표적인 VOCs인 톨루엔의 흡 탈착 특성을 랩(Lab)규모로 실험하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 $30m^3min^{-1}$ 규모의 VSA 시스템을 설계하여 실제 도장 공장에 적용하여 VSA 시스템의 현장적용 가능성에 대하여 평가하였다. 랩 규모 실험 결과, 2 mm 펠렛형 활성탄은 4 mm 펠렛형 활성탄보다 높은 톨루엔 흡착능을 나타내었으며, 이에 파일럿 규모의 VSA의 충진 활성탄으로 사용되었다. 탈착 실험에서는 $80{\sim}90^{\circ}C$의 온도와 100 torr의 압력이 최적 조건으로 결정되었다. 랩 규모 실험 결과를 바탕으로 파일럿 규모 VSA 시스템을 설계하였으며 실제 도장 공장에 현장 적용하여 95회 흡 탈착 실험을 반복 수행하였다. 수행 결과, 연속 흡 탈착 반복실험 후, 도정공장에서 배출된 VOCs를 98% 이상 효과적으로 제거 가능함을 확인하였으며 VSA 시스템의 안정적인 현장 적용이 가능함을 검증하였다.

선박의 배기가스 폐열을 활용한 열전발전시스템에 관한 기초 열해석 (Fundamental Heat Analysis about the Thermoelectric Generation System Using the Waste Heat of Exhaust Gas from Ship)

  • 해상에서는 UN산하 IMO(International Maritime Organization, 국제해사기구)는 선박에서 배출하는 $CO_2$량을 2030년까지 30 %까지 줄이는 것을 목표로 설정하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 상황에 대응하고 친환경기술의 개발을 목표로 선박용 내연기관에서의 폐열을 이용하는 열전발전시스템 개발에 최종목표를 두고, 본 논문에서는 선박용 열전발전시스템 개발에 앞서 기초 열해석을 실시하고 분석하였다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 열전발전시스템의 효율향상에 관한 유효한 방법을 얻어 낼 수 있었다. 1) 고온측 열원과 모듈간 온도차를 줄여 모듈의 온도차를 늘리는 것으로 열전발전시스템의 효율이 8.917 %로 향상되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 2) 외부부하저항의 변화에 따른 시스템 효율은 약 6 %로 그 변화폭이 크게 발생하지 않는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 3) 동일 계산 조건에서 방형관의 재질이 스테인레스인 경우의 시스템 효율이 8.707 %로 두랄루민(8.605 %), 동(8.607 %)보다 높을 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Hot Wall Epitaxy(HWE)법에 의한 $AgInS_2$단결성 박막의 성장과 가전자대 갈라짐에대한 광전류 연구 (Photocurrent Study on the Splitting of the Valence Band and Growth of $AgInS_2$GaAs Single Crystal Thin Film by Hot Wall Epitaxy)

  • 수평 전기로에서 AgInS₂ 다결정을 합성하여 HWE(Hot Wall Epitaxy)방법으로 AgInS₂ 단결정 박막을 반절연성 GaAs(100)기판에 성장시켰다. AgInS₂ 단결정 박막의 성장 조건은 증발원의 온도 680℃, 기판의 온도 410℃였고 성장 속도는 0.5㎛/hr였다. AgInS₂ 단결정 박막의 결정성의 조사에서 10 K에서 광발광(photoluminescence)스펙트럼이 597.8 nm(2.0741 eV)에서 exciton emission스펙트럼이 가장 강하게 나타났으며, 또한 이중결정 X-선 요동곡선(DCRC)의 박폭치(FWHM)도 121 arcsec로 가장 작아 최적 성장 조건임을 알수 있었다. Hall 효과는 van der Pauw 방법에 의해 측정되었으며, 온도에 의존하는 운반자 농도와 이동도는 293K에서 각각 9.35×10/sup 16/㎤, 294㎠/V·s 였다. AgInS₂ /SI(SEmi-Insulated) GaAs(100) 단결정 박막의 광흡수와 광전류 spectra를 293K에서 10K까지 측정하였다. 광흡수 스펙트럼으로부터 band gap E/sub g/(T)는 Varshni 공식에 따라 계산한 결과 2.1365eV-(9.89×10/sup-3/eV/K/)T²(T+2930K)이었으며 광전류 스펙트럼으로부터 Hamiltopn matrix(Hopfield quasicubic mode)법으로 계산한 결과 crystal field splitting Δcr값이 0.1541eV이며 spin-orbit Δso 값은 0.0129eV임을 확인하였다. 10K일때 광전류 봉우리들은 n=1 일때 A₁-, B-₁와 C₁-exction 봉우림을 알았다.

HVPE 방법에 의해 성장된 graded AlGaN 에피층의 특성 (Characterizations of graded AlGaN epilayer grown by HVPE)

  • 본 논문에서는 Al 조성이 점진적으로 변화된 AlGaN 에피층을 HVPE (hydride vapor phase epitaxy) 방법에 의하여 성장하였다. 소스영역의 온도는 $950^{\circ}C$, 성장 영역의 온도는 $1145^{\circ}C$에서 연속적으로 (0001) 사파이어 기판위에 성장되었고, AlGaN 에피층은 시간당 100 nm의 성장률을 보였다. FE-SEM 측정과 EDS 측정으로부터 성장층의 Al 변화를 확인하였으며, AFM 측정결과 2인치 기판위에 성장된 graded AlGaN 에피층의 거칠기는 수십 nm였다. Al 조성의 변화는 XRD 측정에 의하여 확인하였으며, Al 조성 74 %의 (002) AlGaN의 주피크 관측과 함께 연속적으로 (002) AlN 층의 피크가 확인되었다. 이는 하나의 층에 사파이어 기판으로부터 Al 조성이 점진적으로 변화하는 에피층을 HVPE 방법으로 얻었음을 증명하며, 이 결과로부터 다양한 광소자 및 전자소자의 응용이 기대된다.

용접흄 충 금속함량 변화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Content Variation of Metals in Welding Fumes)

  • Concentration of welding fumes and their components is known to be hazardous to welder and adjacent worker. To determine the generation rates of metals in fumes, $CO_2$ flux cored arc welding on stainless steel was performed in well designed fume collection chamber. Variables were different products of flux cored wire(2 domestic products and 4 foreign products) and input energy(low-, optimal- , high input energy). Mass of welding fumes was determined by gravimetric method(NIOSH 0500 method), and 17 metals were analysed by inductively coupled plasm-atomic emission spectroscopy(NIOSH 7300 method). Flux cored wire tube and flux were analysed by scanning electron microscopy to determine their metal composition. 17 metals were classified by their generation rates. Generation rates of iron, manganese, potassium and sodium were all above 50mg/min at optimal input energy level. Generation rates of chromium and amorphous silica were 25~50mg/min. At 1~25mg/min level, nickel, titanium, molybdenum, and aluminum were included. Copper, zinc, calcium, lead, magnesium, lithium, and cobalt were generated below 1 mg/min. Generation rates of metal components in fumes were influenced by input energy, types of flux cored wire. Flux cored wire was consisted of outer shell tube and inner flux. Iron, chromium, and nickel were the major components of outer tube. Flux contained iron, chromium, nickel, potassium, sodium, silica, and manganese. The use of flux cored wire can increase the hazards by increasing the amounts of fumes formed relative to that of solid wire. The reason might be the direct transfer of elements from the flux, since the flux is fine power. Ratio of metals to the fume of flux cored wire was lower than that of solid wire because non-metal components of flux were transferred. Total metal content of fumes in flux cored arc welding was 47.4(24.3~57.2) percent that is much lower than that of solid wire, 75.9 percent. We found that generation rates of iron, manganese, chromium and nickel, all well known to cause work related disease to welder, increased more rapidly with increasing input energy than those of fumes. To reduce worker exposure to fumes and hazardous component at source, further research is needed to develop new welding filler materials that decrease both the amount of fumes and hazardous components.

Correlation of Breast Cancer Incidence with the Number of Motor Vehicles and Consumption of Gasoline in Korea

  • While several reproductive and lifestyle-related factors are already well-known as established risk factors for breast cancer, environmental factors have attracted attention only recently. The objective of the current study was to assess the association between the breast cancer incidences in females, the mortality rate and the number of motor vehicles on the one side and the consumption of gasoline which could work as a major source of air pollution at the other side. The breast cancer incidences and the mortality trends were compared with various indices of westernization like dietary patterns or industrialization with 10 years lag of time. Geographical variations with 10, 15 and 20 years lag of time were assessed between the breast cancer incidence in 2010 and the number of motor vehicles as well as the consumption of gasoline. The upward trend of motor vehicle numbers proved to be comparable to those of breast cancer incidence and mortality. However, the consumption of gasoline started to decrease since the mid-1990s. The geographic distribution of motor vehicle numbers and gasoline consumption in 1990 is in a positive correlation with the breast cancer incidence rates in 2010 and the 20-year lag time ($R^2$ 0.379 with the number of motor vehicles and 0.345 with consumption of gasoline). In a linear relationship between the breast cancer incidences in 2010 and the log transformed number of motor vehicles, the log transformed consumption of gasoline in 2000 also showed a positive relationship ($R^2$ 0.367 with the number of motor vehicles and 0.329 with consumption of gasoline). The results of the current study indicate that there may be a positive relation between the number of vehicles, gasoline consumption and the incidence of breast cancer from the aspects of long-term trends and geographical variation.
