  • In the nuclear medicine imaging, quality control (QC) process using quadrant bar phantom is fundamental aspect of evaluating the spatial resolution. In addition, QC process of gamma camera is performed by daily or weekly. Recently, Monte Carlo simulation using the Geant4 application for tomographic emission (GATE) is widely applied in the pre-clinical nuclear medicine field for modeling gamma cameras with pixelated cadmium telluride (CdTe) semiconductor detector. In this study, we modeled a pixelated CdTe semiconductor detector and quadrant bar phantom (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm bar thicknesses) using the GATE tool. Similarity analysis based on correlation coefficients and peak signal-to-noise ratios was performed to compare image qualities for various source to collimator distances (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 cm) and collimator lengths (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 cm). To this end, we selected reference images based on collimator length and source to collimator distance settings. The results demonstrate that as the collimator length increases and the source to collimator distance decreases, the similarity to reference images improves. Therefore, our simulation results represent valuable information for the modeling of CdTe-based semiconductor gamma imaging systems and QC phantoms in the field of nuclear medicine.

  • Compton imaging excels at visualizing gamma rays in the range of several hundred kiloelectronvolts to several megaelectronvolts. However, this technique has limitations in the imaging of low-energy gamma rays. In contrast, collimatorless imaging technique determines the location of a source by analyzing the distribution of interactions. Because the collimatorless imaging technique excels at imaging low-energy gamma rays that are easily shielded by detector components, it can compensate for the shortcomings of the Compton imaging technique. In this study, we propose a dual-mode imaging technique that selects the imaging method depending on the target gamma-ray energy and fuses them during reconstruction. The collimatorless imaging method demonstrated high angular resolution at low energy levels, whereas the Compton image surpasses it starting from 200 keV within its reconstructible range. The angular resolution of the dual-mode image was between those of the two methods. The trend of the positional error of gamma ray energy was similar to that of the angular resolution, and the dual-mode method exhibited the lowest average error of 0.7°. The dual imaging method exhibited higher efficiency, figure of merit, and signal-to-noise ratio by utilizing events from both imaging modalities. In addition, we investigated the geometrical effects of various structures.

  • Nuclear power plant has increased continuously for power production in all over the world and the interest about nuclear accident and the dismantling of aging nuclear power plant has been a growing. The leaked radioactive source that is generated by radiation accidents must detect and remove to minimized the damage as soon as possible. Gamma-ray detection system that have been developed until now cannot provide the precise position of radioactive sources because they detect and imaging the position of radiation sources in just two dimensions. In this paper, stereo gamma ray detection system has developed and the algorithm for calculation of the distance has implemented to be able to measure the distribution of the leakage gamma ray source for the system. Stereo camera calibration for distance detection was conducted with the correction pattern and LED light and we carried out performance test of the system for the LED light source and a gamma ray source. In both experiments the results of the performance test, it was confirmed to have a 5% error. The results of this paper is used as a material for the development of gamma-ray imaging device.

  • A two-dimensional (2D) / three-dimensional (3D) convertible display system based on integral imaging is proposed to adopt a novel switchable point light source array, which is implemented using the polarization modulator and the polarization selective scattering film that transmits or scatters the incident light due to its polarization direction. The 2D and the 3D display modes of the proposed system can be modulated by controlling the polarization direction of back light using the polarization modulator. We explain the basic principles of the proposed system and verify the feasibility of the system through preliminary experiments.

  • A hybrid technique that combines the advantages of binaural reproduction and sound field reproduction technique is proposed. The concept of HRTF-field, which is defined as the set of HRTFs corresponding to the various head dislocations, enables us to realize virtual source imaging over a wide area. Conventional $2{\times}2$ definition is redefined as a MIMO system composed of multiple control sources and multiple head locations, and HRTF variations corresponding to various head movement are quantified. Through the direct control of HRTF-field, reproduction error induced by head dislocation can be minimized in least-square-error sense, and consequential disturbances on the virtual source image can be reduced within a selected area. Simple lateralization examples are investigated, and the reproduction error of the proposed technique is compared to that of Higher-order Ambisonics.

  • Demand of fluid flow visualization has increased in industrial processes, because medical imaging technology is highly developed. As a part of the industrial process imaging technology, industrial single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) system was developed to measure the cross-sectional distribution of the process fluid. The SPECT consists of 36 NaI (Tl) detectors with the hexagonal configuration. Reconstructed images were acquired for various positions of radioactive source to estimate SPECT device performance. To evaluate the reliability of the experimental results, the Monte Carlo simulation results are compared with experimental results. In general, the experimental and simulation results were consistent. However, as the source position was getting far from the center of the reactor, the accuracy of reconstructed images was compromised. It seems to be due to the inconsistent spatial resolution of the collimators according to the source position.

  • In this paper, a method is tested to measure temperatures in high-temperature welds. Protective glass was installed between an infrared thermal imaging camera and a heat source, and temperature compensation was applied to the measuring instruments. When the temperature of halogen lamps was taken in real-time and measured by the thermal camera, the temperature was found to be almost invariant with the distance between the camera and heat source. The temperature range could be predicted, through correlations with the thickness of the protective glass and the measured distance. This study suggests that the temperature measurement of welds obtained by using an infrared thermal imaging camera is valid, through experimental testing of heat sources.

  • Common-path interferometers are widely used for endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) because an arbitrary arm length can be chosen for the endoscopic imaging probe. However, the scheme suffers from the limited range of the sample position distance from the end of the imaging probe because the position between the reference reflector and the sample is limited by the optical path-length difference (OPD) to induce an interference signal. In this study, we developed a novel method for compensating the arbitrary sample position in common-path swept-source OCT by adding an extra Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the post-path of the interfered optical signal. Theoretical analysis and an experimental demonstration of imaging depth tuning for the flexible sample position of an endoscopic OCT image are discussed. After post-tuning of sample position distance, the positioning limitation between the reference reflector and the sample can be solved for various sample positions over a range of 26 mm for the cross-sectional images of a fish eye sample.

  • Optical-based imaging technology has high resolution and can assess images in real time. Numerous studies have been conducted for its application in the dental field. The current research introduces an oral camera that includes fluorescent imaging, a second study examining a 3D intraoral scanner applying a confocal method and a polarization structure that identifies the 3D image of a tooth, and finally, an optical coherence tomography technique. Using this technique, we introduce a new concept 3D oral scanner that simultaneously implements 3D structural imaging as well as images that diagnose the inside of teeth. With the development of light source technology and detector technology, various optical-based imaging technologies are expected to be applied in dentistry.
