  • Recently, international standard for measurement of sound absorption in a reverberation room has been amended. In the revised version, temperature, humidity and air pressure conditions are strictly restricted and also the concrete procedures are presented to reduce the differences in test results by adding inspection of diffusion, measurement uncertainty etc. In this paper, the systematic tests are conducted based on the inspection guide of diffusion defined by ISO 354 and the effects of diffusers on the measurement of sound absorption ratio are considered. As a result, we perceived that the averaged sound absorption ratio in mid and high frequency range is expected to measure around $0.05{\sim}0.1$ higher in high sound absorption material. Therefore, as for the reverberation room for measurement of sound absorption, we need to take into consideration not only the spatial standard deviation of sound pressure mandated by ISO 3741, but also, inspection regulation of diffusion showed by ISO 354.

  • Today, the use of the sound absorptive material is increasing to improve the room acoustics in the auditorium and music hall, etc. Usually, the sound absorption materials have been used to enhance the performance of a noise barrier and improve the room acoustics in construction site. Generally, the sound absorbtion coefficients are the most important factor reflecting the sound absorbtion performance. There are two methods to measure the sound absorption coefficient. The first one is the reverberation room method, and the second is the impedance tube method. In this study, we measure the sound absorbtion coefficients using these two methods, and then we compared the results of the sound absorbtion coefficients to look into the difference of results between reverberation room method and impedance tube method. Also we compared the results of the sound absorbtion coefficients with respect to the size of sample and the volume of reverberation room. From the experiment, we could see that the sound absorbtion coefficients are measured equally for different sample size. But the sound absorbtion coefficients are measured differently according to test methods and test conditions.

  • We introduce a new velocity sensor, micro-flown sensor, which was developed by H-E de Bree. The sound absorption coefficients of a fiber material with the conventional pressure microphones and the micro-flown sensors were measured and compared. The experimental results show that both sensors could be well applied to measure the sound absorption coefficient but the pressure sensor was rather stable than micro-flown sensor

  • Foamed aluminum is well known metallic porous sound absorption material which has excellent properties of light weight and high absorbing performance. For the purpose of finding out the sound field characteristics within a simple closed cubic enclosure with foamed aluminum, analytic and experimental studies are performed. For the first time, the standing wave apparatus is used to measure absorption coefficient and impedance of the foamed aluminum. Next, the sound effects of absorption material in acoustically loaded rectangular enclosure are identified according as the foamed aluminim is to be or not.

  • In case of the working machine that using in the loud-noisy workplace, as it generates the loud-noise, it is influencing a physical, mental bad effect to those workers. Accordingly, though the noise countermeasure for the loud-noisy workplace is acutely requiring, until now, those methods that wearing the soundproof-protection tool, or restriction the working hours, and minimize the noise exposure volume, were mainly used. However, such noise countermeasures occur many problem points. On such point of view, using the acoustic simulation technique, let the workers to choose the workplace where suffering many damages due to the noise of working machine, and after grasp the physical property of working machine and indoor acoustic characteristic, this Study has attempted to grasp the reduction degree of noise level at before-improvement?after-improvement, through the sound-absorption measure. Passing through such preceding step, using auralizational technique based on the noise of working machine of before-improvement after-improvement, and by conduct psycho-acoustics evaluation, this study intended to investigate the change degree of subject reaction. As the result of evaluation, it is considering that the noise-reduction countermeasure method for the loud-noisy workplace could be much effective, through the sound-absorption measure.

  • In some cases it is important to be able to measure not only the total sound intensity on a panel surface in a vehicle cabin, but also the components of that intensity due to sound radiation and due to absorption from the incident field. For example, these intensity components may be needed for calibration of energy flow models of the cabin noise. A robust method based on surface absorption coefficient measurement is presented in his paper.

  • The acoustic performances of steel-wire sound absorbing materials with different thicknesses and bulk densities were investigated experimentally. The well-known two-cavity method was used to measure the characteristic impedance, propagation constant and absorption coefficient. The normal absorption coefficients measured by two-cavity method agreed well with those by the two-microphone impedance tube method. The experimental results showed that the magnitude of the absorption coefficient and the frequency range of the maximum absorption coefficient were controllable by changing the thickness and bulk density of the steel-wire. Therefore, the steel-wires obtained from the crushed tire chips could be used as a good absorbing material.

  • This study analyzes the characteristics of sound-absorbing materials made from forest by-products of the deciduous tree species Zelkova serrata (Z. serrata) by evaluating their sound absorption performance. Accordingly, sound-absorbing materials with varying sample thicknesses, leaf sizes, and drying conditions were fabricated. The sound absorption properties were measured using the impedance tube method via middle-type measurement tube (100 Hz-3,200 Hz). The sound absorption properties were evaluated using the average sound absorption coefficient (ASAC), which was calculated from the measured sound absorption coefficients at 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz. The ASAC value significantly improved as the leaf size increased to 0.5×0.5 cm2, 1.0×1.0 cm2, and 2.0×2.0 cm2. The ASAC values under the two drying conditions were similar. There was no significant difference in ASAC according to the leaf size under the air-dried leaf condition, with a thickness of 2.50 cm. The highest ASAC value according to the sound-absorbing material thickness was 0.47 at a thickness of 2.50 cm and leaf size of 2.0×2.0 cm2 under the air-dried leaf condition. In addition, the variation in ASAC was 0.23, indicating that the sound absorption performance according to leaf thickness was more significant than the difference in absorption properties according to leaf size. A sound absorption coefficient (SAC) of 0.4 or higher was observed across the measurable frequency band (100 Hz-3,200 Hz). Furthermore, the SAC values with respect to leaf size and thickness were close to 1 in the high-frequency range above 2,000 Hz. Therefore, it is considered that sound-absorbing materials using Z. serrata leaves are advantageous in the field of absorbing noise in a high-frequency band of 2,000 Hz or more, and it is better to manufacture a thickness of 2.50 and 2.0×2.0 cm2.

  • When measuring the sound absorption coefficient of a specimen, a reverberation room which is costly or an impedance tube which has limitations in measuring low frequencies have been engaged. In this paper, a new measurement method of acoustic impedance or sound absorption coefficient has been suggested, which does not need microphones and only uses electrical impedance measurement data and derived Thiele/Small parameters of a speaker. The theory of this method has been described using equivalent circuit of the loudspeaker and acoustic properties of a test specimen are measured to demonstrate the validity of this method. It was confirmed that this method can easily measure the sound absorption coefficient in the low frequency band, which was previously difficult to trust. The advantages, limitations, and applicability of this method are discussed.
