  • The noise produced in a factory is a cause of the noise complaint of the surrounding residential areas. In addition, it affects the work efficiency and health of workers. This paper presents the results of a basic study to reduce the noise generated from the blower, which is often used in the factory of a small and medium scale, using an active noise controller (ANC) in three-dimensional space. For this purpose, the simulator program, which can compare various parameters of the original noise and controlled noise, such as sound pressure levels, power spectra, and equivalent noise levels, was developed. The noise data was recorded at 17 points around a turbo fan blower currently being operated in a small-medium size factory. The simulation results showed that the power spectrum was reduced by a maximum of 40dB in the low frequency band and the average equivalent noise level attenuation was 12.6dB.

  • In recent SONAR (sound navigation and ranging) systems, wideband active SONAR systems has received more attention than narrowband SONAR systems due to the remarkable detection performance in terms of range resolution. However, the wideband SONAR systems usually requires a huge amount of computational burden in order to achieve their own superiority. To cope with this drawback of the wideband SONAR systems, this paper proposes a fast target detection and velocity estimation method using an extended replica in wideband hyperbolic frequency modulation active SONAR system. Computer simulation shows that the proposed method can be implemented by a highly reduced computational complexity with a little performance degradation in target detection and velocity estimation compared to the conventional filter bank method.

  • In order to obtain basic information for using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel as a tissue mimicking phantom for temperature visualization, the temperature change characteristics due to the focused ultrasound were examined for different concentration of PVA. To obtain the basic acoustic characteristics, the speed of sound, the attenuation coefficient, and the density depending on the PVA concentration were measured, and the thermodynamic characteristics, such as thermal conductivity and heat capacity, were measured. The range of temperature rising in the vicinity of the focal point due to the focused ultrasound was observed using a thermochromic film that changes color at 30 degree or more, and the discolored area was obtained by image processing of the recorded image. As the concentration of PVA increases in the given range of 2 wt% ~ 16 wt%, the area that rises above 30 degree inside the gel increases linearly. It is confirmed that the discolored area increases as the power applied to the focused ultrasonic transducer increases. These results showed good agreement with the simulation results using the finite element method.

  • An equation is developed to estimate potential groundwater resources available for development. This equation is useful for preliminary planning stages prior to detailed design stages. The equation is a function of major factors such as aquifer characteristics, saltwater intrusion length, coastal groundwater discharge and potential locations of pumping wells. Thus, most important factors are taken into account. The equations are derived using well-known analytical solutions. Thus, the basis is scientifically sound. Use of the equation is quite simple since it is an explicit function of variables. A logical method is proposed to assess a radius of influence of a pumping well considering aquifer characteristics and the pumping rate. Applications to a hypothetical problem and comparison with results from a more rigorous numerical simulation model indicate that results obtained from the proposed equation are conservative.

  • A preform is designed by the backward tracing scheme of the rigid-plastic finite element method(FEM) for net-shape shell nosing components without machining after forming. The current process of the shell nosing requires cost-consuming machining to produce final products. Here, the backward tracing scheme of the rigid-plastic FEM, a novel method for preform design of metal forming processes, derives a sound preform for net-shape shell nosing product. The current process is simulated by the rigid-plastic finite element analysis to check the metal flow involved in the forming with a trial preform and its modified preform. The two preforms are found to be inadequate for net-shape shell nosing product. The first application of the back ward tracing scheme derives a preform producing a not-shape shell nosing product. The first application of the backward tracing scheme derives a preform producing a net-shape product numerically, but it is difficult to be formed economically as a preform. Thus an improved preform is designed by the badkward tracing scheme, which is suitable for net-shape manufacturing of the shell nosing components in view of economy of production and forming characteristics of the product. The preform in the current process and a modified preform are confirmed by a series of experiments and the results give the same deformation with the numerical ones. Finally the newly designed preform by the FEM was experimentally proved to be adequate in obtaining net-shape products.

  • Due to change of various marine environments according to seawater temperature rising, Japanese common squid(Todarodes pacificus), which was distributed in East Sea, was recently caught in Yellow Sea during a summer season from 2006. The fishery resources density research was carried out in Korea-China Provisional Water Zone using trawl fishing gear and acoustics in National Fisheries Research & Development Institute in Korea. This paper showed the analysis on the acoustical backscattering strength by two frequencies(38kHz, 120kHz) for Japanese common squid by acoustical scattering theoretical model based on size distribution for survey period, and estimate the density distribution for squid s integrated layer which was extracted from any scatterers distributed in water column using two frequency difference method which has been used to distinguish fish shoals or specific target scatterers from sound scattering layer which is composed of various zooplankton. Furthermore, the entire range of their density estimation was suggested using by Monte Carlo simulation under considering each uncertainty such as size distributions or swimming angle and so on in survey area.

  • A torsional damper comprised of two stage pre-dampers was used to reduce the rattle noise generated in the PTO gear box of a direct engine-PTO driveline of agricultural tractors. It was designed and mounted to the engine flywheel to reduce the torque fluctuation-induced speed variations at the driving gears in the PTO gearbox, which were found to be main cause of the rattle noise. The effects of a hysteresis torque and a torsional stiffness of the damper on the speed variation were analyzed using an 11 degree of freedom non-linear model of the damped PTO driveline. The torsional damper was represented by a single degree of freedom model with 7 parameters. Under a constant hysteresis torque, velocity variation was reduced with decrease in the torsional stiffness of the damper. The velocity variation was also decreased with decrease in the hysteresis torque under a constant torsional stiffness. Optimum values of the torsional stiffness and hysteresis torque were obtained by the model simulation for the PTO driveline under the study. When the optimum values of the damper were used, the sound pressure level of the rattle noise was reduced by 81%, resulting in a reduction of 15dB(A). The optimum damper also reduced the engine speed variation, resulting in a reduction of 80% at the driving gears in the PTO gearbox. The torsional damper showed a good performance in reducing the rattle noise caused by the speed variation in the direct engine-PTO driveline.

  • Recently, the problem which actively control the unwanted noise propagated from the technical structure by the generated secondary sound has become considerable topic from the environmental preservation point of view. In most of these studies, active noise control deals with a plane wave propagation at low frequency using adaptive filtering techniques. On the other hand, in real acoustic systems are mostly short due to the limitation of geometric configuration. In this case, the acoustic properties such as reflections and resonances inside the acoustic system should be considered. In this paper, the acoustic modeling method for short length duct was introduced using the transfer matrix method, and the active noise control problem was investigated with \implementation of FIR filter for the transfer function of control system derived from this modeling method. The identification methods for the acoustic model of actual control system was proposed by numerical computation technique based on the estimation of optimal FIR filter coefficients. The acceptable attenuation on the real acoustic system and stability of the controller are predicted in this computational simulation.

  • A class-D audio amplifier is widely used in coil speaker. This paper presented the technique for applying a class-D audio amplifier to the ceramic flat speaker. This technique can be achieved by employing a matching transmitter in order to replace class-G amplifier that is drven by voltage level to class-D amplifier employing power driving method. Consequently, the presented technique can improve the efficiency by making the voltage driving level a litter larger. We evaluate the sound-level efficiency using the various mediums such as wood, plastic, and paper. From the simulation results, the proposed technique employing a class-D audio amplifier rather than a class-G one showed a 10% improvement. The proposed system can be applicable for the mobile appliances as an external slim speaker.
