  • We have proposed a simple method based on IIR filters for realizing sound image localization. How-ever the nonlinearity of phase characteristics of the IIR filters, which are used for sound image localization, cause decrease of the localization accuracy. In this paper we investigate the influence of phase characteristics on the sound localization. Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) of a dummy-head are approximated by the IIR filter. We carried out sound image localization experiment with 2-loudspeaker reproduction using the approximated HRTFs. Then the errors which obtained from experiments were compared with the theoretical values which were estimated from the phase shifts of the IIR filters. As a result there was little influence of the nonlinear phase characteristics of the IIR fitters in the localization on the horizontal plane.

  • The word "soundscape" proposed by Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer is now became very popular. So various soundscape design based on soundscape idea are carried on worldwide for acoustic ecology. Also in Korea, several soundscape design were made for the public spaces such as river, park and bridge but, basic concept behind soundscape design was not reflected and studied sufficiently. In that sense, this study aims to arrange the concept of soundscape design process and to review the design proposals of Gwangju River. In this process, the reproduction concept of soundscape, natural sound, light with sound, cultural and historical sound and etc. were classified and the final design was proposed to recover the natural environment and harmonize the sound with surroundings as creative soundscape.

  • Measurement of noise is not only to know the information of acoustic pressure but to assess human response for noise. Provided that want to find human response for transportation noise, we will have to reproduce the measured noise. The method of reproduction is largely divided into monaural and binaural reproduction techniques. Human fundamentally hears sound through both ears, which is binaural hearing. And binaural technique includes the more information of physical phenomena like acoustical reflection and deflection. So, binaural reproduction is more suitable for assessment of the psychoacoustical and physiological response for transportation noise exposures.

  • The infringement of the copyright is a problem by the distribution of digital contents copied illegally. The digital watermark is expected as a thing preventing unjust copying by burying information in digital data such as image, animation, the sound, TV, radio and movies. [1] [2]But a noise is included in a digital watermark reproduction image. So there is the case that the certification of the reproduction image has difficulty with. If a computer cannot recognize the information reproduced from digital watermarking, the information does not have a meaning. This paper aimed at improvement of the proof of a digital-watermarking reproduction image. And it is verified whether the difference of the form of a character affects the degree of correlation.

  • This paper describes Three-Dimensional Listening Simulation System (3D-LSS) which is to analyze whistle sound related marine casualties, and is to evaluate the accident situations using 3D sound by Head Related Transfer Function. At first, the three-dimensional listening model from the analysis of accident situations is proposed, and then the reproduction and evaluation methods of 3D sounds are also discussed. The system is designed to explain the accident situations and to simulate the possible situations with GUI based graphics and 3D sound reproduction. The evaluation experiments using 3D-LSS are carried out with six cases that did not known whether it is true or not the blast and listening of the whistle sound between two vessels. As results of psychological assessments by five subjects, the six cases can be analyzed clearly by visual images and audio sounds, thus the usability of 3D-LSS as one of the judgment assistant system of marine casualty is verified.

  • The objective of this paper is to design multichannel spherical loudspeaker array by considering various positioning methods such as Gaussian grid, Lebedev grid and packing method. For the spatial sound manipulation, which is to make desired sound field by controling multiple sound sources, the Kirchhoff- Helmholtz integral states that sound fields can be reproduced in terms of infinite control sources on the integral surface. But since we cannot control infinite number of sources for the implementation, we have to allocate finite number of sound sources which can approximately act as infinite number of sources. To manipulate sound field inside of a sphere (which is typical example of three dimensional array) by controlling sound sources on the surface, three methods of allocating sound sources, which are Gaussian grid, Lebedev grid and packing method, are reviewed. For each geometry, the performances of manipulation rendered by time-reversal operator and higher-order ambisonics are compared.

  • A multichannel signal processing algorithm for generating real time virtual sound field was proposed. Evaluation of the system performance was done by an objective function that minimizes the difference between the real and generated signals at each control point. Since impulse responses at the surface of a rigid sphere show characteristics similar to those of real HRTF, a rigid sphere model was adequate to simulate the multichannel sound system. A two-channel system and two four-channel systems were studied with various combinations of source locations and speaker positions. The results show that a two-channel system has its best configuration when the angle spanned by the loudspeakers is less than $60^{\circ}$. In the case of four-channel systems, the overall performance was highly improved with one pair of speakers fixed at an optimal position. Left/right symmetry was a reasonable choice, but the additional front/back symmetry degraded the performance of system.

  • This study presents a perceptual difference in acceleration sounds of a sporty sedan between the driver and passenger. We found a significant difference in annoyance and sportiness perception according to the acceleration sound level through subjective evaluations. The multimodal reproduction system, which can reproduce the driving image, motion, vibration, and sound, was applied for the test. A subjective experiment was conducted to evaluate the perceived intensity of annoyance and sportiness by varying the acceleration sound level in five steps of 3 dB. The experimental results showed that the driver perceives the acceleration sound less annoying than the passenger at a relatively low sound level. Meanwhile, the driver has perceived the acceleration sound more sporty than the passenger at a relatively high sound level. Moreover, it was found that passengers were 35 % less sensitive to an annoyance than drivers, whereas the driver was 74 % more susceptible to sportiness than passengers according to the sound level change. This finding is expected to be applied as a sound design strategy that differentiates the acceleration sound level in active sound design.
