The accurate prediction of aeroacoustic analysis is necessary for designers to control and reduce airflow-induced sound pressure levels in high speed rotating DVD drives. This paper focuses on the numerical prediction of airflow-induced sound in DVD drives. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is first conducted to evaluate flow field characteristics due to the high-speed disk rotation, and to support the acoustic analysis. The acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings(FW-H) equation is adopted to predict aeroacoustic noise patterns. The integral solution for quadrupole volume source is included to identify the turbulence noise generated inside the DVD tray. The strength of sound pressure level with respect to rotating speed is discussed to meet upfront demand on the high fidelity product development. The present study also focuses on the noise directivity and examines how much the sound noise is sensitive to change in rotating speed. Near-field noise is strongly affected by the flow field characteristic, which is caused by the complex shape of the tray. For a mid-field, the quadrupole noise play as a counterpart of thickness noise or loading noise, so it generates different sound noise patterns compared with those in the near field.
Research has been conducted to examine the effects of mechanical and sound characteristics of fabrics on affective quality. The present study developed the Affective Quality Evaluation and Estimation System for Textiles (AQEEST) with distinguished features that can be effectively used in the affective research of fabric frictional sound. The AQEEST consists of three subsystems (affective quality evaluation, affective quality estimation, and audible distance estimation subsystems) and each subsystem consists of three to four modules (e.g., evaluation condition setup, evaluation experimentation, and textile database management modules) depending on its functional requirements. The affective quality evaluation subsystem was designed to help administer an experiment in a systematic manner and present acoustic and visual stimuli simultaneously in various gait conditions (walking, jogging, and running) to mimic a more realistic situation of textile frictional sound production. Next, the affective quality estimation subsystem was designed to estimate the sound characteristics, affective qualities, overall psychological satisfaction, and reference cluster of a textile using its mechanical and/or sound characteristic information. Lastly, the audible distance estimation subsystem was designed to estimate the just noticeable sound pressure levels and audible distances of a textile for various gait conditions using its mechanical characteristic information. The AQEEST can be upgraded by accommodating more affective quality study results for various textiles.
PURPOSES: The purpose of study is to understand the characteristic of driving noise from the front and rear tire for effective active noise cancellation application. METHODS : As literature review, noise measurement methods were reviewed. Noise measurement conducted at three kind of section by road slope using CPX(Close Proximity Method). Noise data was compared by total sound pressure level and 1/3 octave band frequency sound pressure level. Also, each section was compared by T-test using SPSS. RESULTS : In the case of the uphill section, it was shown that the sound pressure level of the front tire at Sugwang-Ri and Sinchon-RI sections was higher than that of the rear tire in low and high frequency band. In the case of high slope section of Sangsaek-Ri, the sound pressure level of the front tire was higher than that of the rear tire in high frequency. Also, in the case of the downhill section, it was shown that the sound pressure level of the front tire at Sugwang-Ri and Sinchon-RI sections was higher than that of the rear tire in low frequency band. However, the sound pressure levels of both the front and rear tires were approximately the same in the high slope section of Sangsaek-Ri. The result of T-test showed that total sound pressures of the front and rear tires were not different from each other in the case of high slope and high speed. CONCLUSIONS: Road slope was not an important variable for effective active noise cancellation.
Noise pollution, both in the environment and in the workplace, has been recognized as a major health hazard -one that can impair not only a person's hearing but also his physical and mental well-being. As industrialization progresses, the prevalence rate of occupational diseases is increasing, especially hearing loss, which has the highest prevalence rate among the occupational diseases. The major cause of noise is the construction of various large industries without any regulation of noise sources. Therefor, we must establish an enactment to control mechanical noise sources. as soon as possible. For the purpose of controlling the noise source, we must have exact data about such things as the sound level, the frequency of the peak sound and the revolutions per minute (r.p.m.) of the machine (a measure of the power of its motor). This study was undertaken in order to define the noise characteristics, the power of the machine's motor, the change of the sound level and the peak sound as the r.p.m. increases, and the permissible exposure time. The sample size of this study was 74 machines at 11 plants in 6 industries. The results are as follows; 1. The breakdown of the types of mechanical noise noted was : 63.6% continuous normal sound, 26.9% intermittent sound, 4.7% continuous repeating sound and 4.6% impulsive sound. 2. With respect to the type of industry, the overall sound level was the highest in the mechanical industry, with $103.8{\pm}2.8dB(A)$, and lowest in the textile industry, with $89.2{\pm}1.43dB(A)$. 3. With respect to the type of machine, the highest sound level was 124 dB(A) caused by Gauzing(II), in the mechanical industry, and the lowest was 76 dB(A) caused by Attachment (Jup Chack) (I) in the timber industry. 4. The shortest permissible exposure time to Gauzing(II) in the mechanical industry was less than 15 minutes. 5. Among 74 machines, 68.2% of the peak sound was situated in the high frequency range (52.7% at 2 KHz, 4.1% at 4 KHz and 1.4% at 8 KHz). 41.8% of the peak sound was in the middle frequency range (4.1% at 250Hz, 14.8% at 500Hz and 22.9% at 1KHz). 6. If one machine had two motors or more, the peak sound was shifted to the low frequency range. 7. As the r.p.m. increased, the overall and peak sound levels were increased without any change of the frequency of the peak sound. 8. Whenever the machines had the same kind and the same r.p.m., the overall and peak sounds were changed by the physicochemical characteristics of the raw materials and the management.
This article evaluates the accuracy of noise measurements for 37 noise measurement applications for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3Gs. Noise levels were measured using simultaneously a precision sound level meter and iPhones installed noise measurement applications at the levels of 70 dB, 80 dB and 90 dB at 1,000 Hz. Measurement errors were estimated by subtracting two measurements between iPhone and sound level meter. It was found that measurement errors of 34 applications(89.2%) were greater than ${\pm}2$ dB which is the maximum allowable error range for the Type II sound level meter. It was only 4 applications that measurement errors lie within ${\pm}2$ dB error range. There was no significant differences among measurements with four iPhone 4s. However, there were significant differences between the measurements with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3Gs using the same application. It was due to the different hardware specifications such as microphone. Therefore, noise measurement applications, for example, which has to utilize hardware of the smartphone, should be programmed to identify hardware specifications and to adopt appropriate correction factors upon hardware specifications. In conclusion, it is necessary to check accuracy and validity before using the noise measurement applications for iPhones. Also, it was suggested that it should develop an evaluation guideline or protocol on accuracy testing for the measurement applications using a smartphone.
In the development of electricity generating wind turbines for wind farm application, only two types have survived as the methods of power regulation; stall regulation and full span pitch control. The main purpose of this paper is to experimentally identify the characteristics of noise emission of wind turbines according to the power regulation types. The sound measurement procedures of IEC 61400-11 are applied to field test and evaluation of noise emission from each of 1.5 MW and 660 kW wind turbines (WT) utilizing the stall regulation and the pitch control for the power regulation, respectively. Apparent sound power level, wind speed dependence, third-octave band levels and tonality are evaluated for both of WTs. It is observed that equivalent continuous sound pressure levels (ECSPL) of the stall control type of WT continue to increase with increasing wind speed whereas those of the pitch control type of WT show less correlation with wind speed. These observed characteristics are believed to be due to the different airflow patterns around the blade between the stall regulation and the pitch control types of WT; the airflow on the suction side of blade in the stall types of WT are separated at the high wind speed. It is also found that the 1.5 MW WT using the stall control emits lower sound power than 660 kW one using the pitch control at wind speeds below 8m/s, whereas sound power of the former becomes higher than that of the latter in the wind speed over 8m/s. This wind-speed dependence of sound power leads to the very different noise omission characteristics of WTs depending on the seasons because the average wind speed in summer is lower than 8m/s whereas that in summer is higher. Based on these experimental observations, it is proposed that, in view of environmental noise regulation, the developer of wind farm should give enough considerations to the choice of power regulation of their WTG based on the weather conditions of potential wind farm locations.
This research presents a laboratory study about an annoyance of impulsive sound caused by construction site(breaker and blasting). The sources are sampled from outdoor noise and their levels range from 40 to 75 dB at the interval of 5dB. The noise unit is based on A-weighted sound exposure level (ASEL; $L_{AE}$). To make equal ASEL of outdoor noise, finite impulse response (FIR) filter is applied to the originally sampled source to include the effect of distance attenuation. The evaluation method of jury test adopted a Semantic Difference Method (SDM). In the result of the Jury test for impulsive noise, the annoyance response of blasting noise was higher than that of breaker noise.
Previous researches and experiments have already verified that the primary noise source of high pressure tandem axial thpe piston pump is fluid-borne noise from the process of oil distribution between the kidney-shaped port and valve plate. So, many researchers have improved pressure gradients and reduced sound levels by applying pre-compression and pre-decompression metering grooves to valve plate. In practice however, the sound level of th high pressure tandem axial type piston pump is still undesirable. This paper testified the effect of pumping phase of the piston on vibration and noise of th high pressure tandem axial type piston pump on the best of theoretical research in $this^(1)$. Therefore considering the pumping phase of the piston when assembling the tandem axial type piston pump, it is possible to reduce 1.5~2[dB]of sound level.
The electrodynamic loudspeakers should have a wide dynamic range to reproduce various sound levels. When the input signal is small, the radiated sound from the loudspeaker is not so much distorted. However, for large input signal with low frequency component the radiated sound is significantly distorted due to the nonlinearities of the loudspeaker. The suspension, damping, and magnetic flux of loudspeaker are the main sources of the nonlinearity. Such electromechanical parameters related to harmonic distortion have been represented by a polynomial model for diaphragm displacement, while each of the polynomial coefficient is evaluated by using the principle of harmonic balance experimentally. Based on the polynomial model, we designed a compensator for nonlinear harmonic distortion of direct radiator loudspeaker. Than observer is used to estimate the displacement of the loudspeaker diaphragm, which is rather difficult to measure directly in the conventional setting. The usefulness of the designed compensator is demonstrated by numerical simulations. Simulation results show about 30db decrease at the second and third higher harmonic distortions. We carry out an experiment on speaker to verify designed controller and nonlinear observer.
