Speech signals are, depending on the characteristics of waveform, classified as voiced sound, unvoiced sound, and silence. Voiced sound, produced by an air flow generated by the vibration of the vocal cords, is quasi-periodic, while unvoiced sound, produced by a turbulent air flow passed through some constriction in the vocal tract, is noise-like. Silence represents the ambient noise signal during the absence of speech. The need for deciding whether a given segment of a speech waveform should be classified as voiced, unvoiced, or silence has arisen in many speech analysis systems. In this paper, a voiced/unvoiced/silence classification algorithm using spectral change in the wavelet transformed signal is proposed and then, experimental results are demonstrated with our discussions.

Signal complexity is one point of view to analyze the biological signal. It arises as a result of the physiological signal produced by biological systems. Signal complexity can be used as a method in extracting the feature for a biological signal to differentiate a pathological signal from a normal signal. In this research, Hjorth descriptors, one of the signal complexity measurement techniques, were measured on signal sub-band as the features for lung sounds classification. Lung sound signal was decomposed using two wavelet analyses: discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and wavelet packet decomposition (WPD). Meanwhile, multi-layer perceptron and N-fold cross-validation were used in the classification stage. Using DWT, the highest accuracy was obtained at 97.98%, while using WPD, the highest one was found at 98.99%. This result was found better than the multi-scale Hjorth descriptor as in previous studies.
In 1896, Rayleigh was appointed as Scientific Advisor of the Trinity House. Rayleigh applied his knowledge of sound to developing effective fog signals during his IS-year tenure at the maritime organization. Rayleigh's expertise on acoustics met an appropriate field for its application during his improvement of the fog signal for the institution. Rayleigh's activities at the Trinity House were motivated by his desire to make contribution to the public. During his research on the fog signal, Rayleigh effectively employed his expertise acquired through his mathematical and experimental research on sound and vibration since the 1860s. Rayleigh developed effective horns for emitting fog signals and proposed various ways of overcoming the weaknesses of sound signals available at that time. While attempting to solve the problem of the attenuation of sound signals disseminating through the air, Rayleigh put foundations of atmospheric acoustics by developing new scientific theories about it.
In the sound insulation measurements, the influence of background (extraneous) noise is often serious problem and how to reduce its effect and to improve the signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio is an important theme. As the background noise, such extraneous noises as road traffic noise and machine noise often disturb the measurement. In laboratory measurements on specimens with high sound insulation performances, even the internal noise of the measurement system can become a problem. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio and to improve the measurement accuracy, various kinds of digital signal processing techniques can be applied. In this paper, four kinds of digital signal processing techniques are applied and their effectiveness is examined by a simple sound insulation measurement.
Abnormal sound was heard from a heat exchanger of condensate water system in a nuclear power plant, which was identified as impact sound of a loose part later. Nuclear power plants are normally equipped with loose part monitoring system for primary water system, but not for secondary water system. The abnormal sound was analyzed by using the impact signal-processing methodology based on the Hertz theory. The predicted results for impact location and size of the loose part showed good agreement with those of the actual loose part found during the overhaul period in the plant. So, this analysis methodology for the impact signal will be widely utilized for the primary and secondary side of the nuclear power plant.
In this paper, an adaptive method of dividing a speech signal into an initial, a medial and a final sound of the form of utterance utilized by evaluating extreme limits of short term energy and autocorrelation functions. By applying this method into speech signal composed of a consonant, a vowel and a consonant, it was divided into an initial, a medial and a final sound and its feature analysis of sample by LPC were carried out. As a result of spectrum analysis in each period, it was observed that there existed spectrum features of a consonant and a vowel in the initial and medial periods respectively and features of both in a final sound. Also, when all kinds of words were adaptively divided into 3 periods by using the proposed method, it was found that the initial sounds of the same consonant and the medial sounds of the same vowels have the same spectrum characteristics respectively, but the final sound showed different spectrum characteristics even if it had the same consonant as the initial sound.
This paper presents the correlation between psychological and physiological acoustics for the automotive acceleration sound. The research purpose of this paper is to evaluate the sound quality of acceleration sound of a passenger car based EEG signal. The previous method for the objective evaluation of sound quality is to use sound metrics based on psychological acoustics. This method uses not only psychological acoustics but also physiological acoustics. For this work, the sounds of 7 premium passenger cars are recorded and evaluated subjectively by 33 people. The correlation between the subjective rating and sound metrics is calculated based on physiological acoustics. Finally the correlation between the subjective rating and the EEG signal measured on the brain is also calculated. Throughout these results the new evaluation system for the sound quality on the automotive acceleration sound of a passenger car has been developed based on bio-signal.
In TV sound system, loudspeakers are subject to severe size constraints. The small size of the transducer affects the low frequency signal performance of the system. Bass signal performance contributes significantly to the user perceived sound quality and a good bass signal reproduction is essential. Increasing the sound energy in the bass signal range is an unviable solution since the gain required are exceedingly high and signal distortion occurs because of the speaker overload. Recently methods are being proposed to invoke low frequency illusion using psychoacoustic phenomena of the missing fundamental. This paper proposes a simple and effective signal processing method to create bass signal illusion in TV speakers using the missing fundamental effect, at a complexity of 12 MIPS on Motorola 56371 audio DSP.
