  • Sosihotang is a herbal medicine traditionally used to treat chronic liver disease. This study was performed to investigate the effect of steaming Sosihotang at a $121^{\circ}C$ on its major compounds and neuroprotective activity. We evaluated quantitative changes of 6 major compounds in Soshihotang, saikosaponin A, homogentisic acid, baicalin, ginsenoside $Rg_3$, glycyrrhizin and 6-gingerol using HPLC-DAD. After steaming produce, saikosaponin A, homogentisic acid, baicalin, glycyrrhizin and 6-gingerol in Sosihotang were decreased and ginsenoside $Rg_3$ was increased. The neuroprotective activity of steamed Sosihotang was determined by MTT assay, comparing to Sosihotang. The steamed sosihotang showed a higher neuroprotective activity than Sosihotang. In conclusion, steam produce could improve neuroprotective activity of Soshihotang.

  • The 'Half outside and half inside(半表半裏)' is the part which is located between outside and inside, and it is regarded as the nickname of ShaoYang(少陽) in Sanhanlun(傷寒論). About the meaning of 'Half outside and half inside', many medical scientists agreed that the 'outside' is 'TaiYang(太陽)', but they didn't agreed the meaning of 'inside'. One group insisted the 'inside' is 'YangMing (陽明)', the other group instisted that 'TaiYin(太陰)'. To know which opinion is correct, I analyed the Kwigyung(歸經) of herbs in Soshihotang(小柴胡湯) which has a close relationship with ShaoYang, and it is proved that the Kwigyung of herbs is the Foot ShaoYang-GALL BLADDER Meridian(足少陽膽經), Hand TaiYin-LUNG Meridian(手太陰肺經), and Foot TaiYin-SPLEEN Meridian(足太陰脾經). So I concluded that the 'inside' is not 'YangMing' but 'TaiYin'.

  • The aim of this article is to investigate the religious medical treatments performed by Kang Jeungsan as recorded in The Canonical Scripture, the main scripture of the Korean new religion, Daesoon Jinrihoe. The unity of mind and body is the core principle underlying Kang Jeungsan's religious medical treatments. He believed treating the mind of his patients was more important and necessary than treating their diseases. As such, he believed the only way to treat critical illness was to keep preserve the mind-body unity of his patients. Massage was a physical therapy often used by Kang Jeungsan. The medicinal materials that he commonly used were the Four-substance Decoction (四物湯 samultang), Minor Bupleurum Decoction (小柴胡湯 soshihotang), quince (木瓜 mokgwa *Pseudocydonia sinensis; not papaya), and rehmannia (生地黃 saengjihwang). Kang Jeungsan's religious medical treatments were characteristic of Daoist healing methods. His Daoist style healing methods included multiple techniques such as treating diseases through correcting Qi, exorcising malevolent entities, transferring diseases to a different host, removing a disease through the changing of clothes, pouring medicine into the ground, combining the usage of talisman and incantations, and treating the common people. Among these techniques, Jeungsan's pouring medicine into the ground was especially innovative.

  • Objectives : It is told that Hyungbangsabaeksan is important to treat the Soyangin(少陽人) disease in Dongyisusebowon. Though Hyungbangsabaeksan is widely applied in Soyangin(少陽人) disease, it is difficult to understand the meaning of Hyungbangsabaeksan and also hard to use clinically. In this study, We tried to reveal the fundamental meaning of the Hyungbangsabaeksan and the indication of Hyungbangsabaeksan. Methods : We mainly studied diseases in Dongyisusebowon. The use of drug in Soyang disease(少陽病) is relatively difficult. So we firstly reviewed Mang-um disease(亡陰證) that is almost close to the Interior syndrome(裏病) and an Analogous Hak(似瘧) that is one of the interior syndrome. Based on the understanding of interior syndrome, We tried to understand Hyungbangsabaeksan in the usage of the drug in Soyang disease(少陽病). Results : We found the key point of indication of Hyungbangsabaeksan in Mang-um disease(亡陰證) of Exterior cold syndrome(表寒病) and an Analogous Hak of Interior syndrome. Also based on that, We identified characteristics of Soyang disease(少陽病). Therefore, we inferred that there are significant symptoms in Soyang disease(少陽病) that Hyungbangsabeaksan could be applied. Conclusions : Reviewing the usage of Hyungbangsabeaksan in Mang-um disease(亡陰證) and an Analogous Hak, we found that Interior syndrome is important in indication of Hyungbangsabeaksan. Also we found that Hyungbangsabeaksan is especially applied when irreversible transition of the disease can be predicted. Based on this, We concluded Hyungbangsabeaksan is preventively used in specific Soyang disease(少陽病), of which the machanism of the disease is similar.

  • Objectives : This study collected and analyzed information related to preventive formulas from continuously published and revised COVID-19 treatment guidelines in various regions of China. Methods : We collected treatment guidelines published in different regions of China and categorized formulas for prevention and medical observation period listed in them according to the editions. The categorized preventive formulas were compared by type and target group. Results : Herbal medicines used for prevention included formulas derived from Korean medical classics, such as Okbyeongpungsan(玉屏風散) and Eunkyosan(銀翹散). The newly composed formulas, totaling over 100, were created by adding, subtracting, and combining formulas such as Sang-gukeum(桑菊飮), Eunkyosan(銀翹散), Sasammaekmundongtang(沙參麥門冬湯), Okbyeongpungsan(玉屏風散), Gwakhyangjeong-gisan(藿香正氣散), and Soshihotang(小柴胡湯). Patent medicines including Huoxiangzhengqi capsule(藿香正氣膠囊), Lianhuaqingwen capsule(連花淸瘟膠囊), Shufengjiedu capsule(疏風解毒膠囊), and Jinhuaqinggan granule(金花淸感顆粒) were frequently used, mainly targeting close contacts. These medicines were used differently depending on the specific population group, such as the general population, the elderly, children, pregnant women, and patients with underlying diseases, and were also applied differently according to the individual's constitution. Conclusion : We were able to identify various background factors contained in the guidelines for the use of preventive formulas presented by TCM group, and understand the social conditions that enabled the group to provide such guidelines. Through this, thorough preparation should be made so that the Korean Medicine can actively respond to another future pandemic.
