In this paper, the retardation capacity of marine clay and weathered soil of seashore waste landfill is analyzed by using a laboratory column apparatus for organic and inorganic components which can represent the components of the leachate of municipal waste landfill. The results show that sorption capacity marine clay for potassium is larger than that of weathered soil. Lead and cadmium are adsorbed completely at concentrations higher than the real concentrations developed in the landfill. The bottom soils of seashore landfill can also retard some nondegradable components of organics although their sorption capacities for organics were less than those for inorganics.
This research was conducted to figure out the feasibility of several sorption materials to treat various pollutants in road runoff. In advance of the major feasibility test with various sorption materials, the separation process with $1.2{\mu}m$ filter was conducted and showed that slight portion of pollutants was removed(Orgamic pollutant - 20%, Nutrient salt - 50%, Heavy metals - 0~30%). To remove dissolved pollutants in runoff, various materials were tested through an isotherm sorption experiment. As a result, GAC showed most effective material among them to lessen most contaminants such as organic compounds and nutrients. On the other hand, ion-exchange resin and Zeolite showed limited usefulness on the some heavy metals. Freundlich model was most suitable for the current experiment data, and the amount of adsorbent (GAC) could calculated based on this model.

Fuel oxygenates, such as Methyl tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is additive in gasoline used to reduce air pollution. Gasoline components and fuel additives can leak form underground storage tanks. MTBE is far more water soluble than gasoline hydrocarbons like BTEX then it travels at essentially the same velocity as groundwater. MTBE in drinking water causes taste and odor problems. Therefore, the purpose of the this study is to examine the ability of ground rubber to sorb MTBE form water. The study consisted of running both batch and column tests to determine the sorption capacity and the flow through utilization efficiency of ground rubber. The result of Column test indicate that ground tire rubber has on the 36% utilization rate. Finally, it is clear that ground rubber present an attractive and relatively inexpensive sorption medium for a MTBE. The Author thought that to determine the economic costs of ground rubber utilization, the cost to sorb a given mass of contaminant by ground rubber will have to be compared to currently accepted sorption media.
The statistical modeling was introduced to satisfy various experimental conditions on the sorption of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn) by clay minerals, i.e. kaolinite, illite and chlorite. The Box-Behnken model designed statistically was applied to determine a relative impact among three variables such as pH, HCO3(or K) concentration and initial concentration of heavy metals. The SAS program was used to obtain the statistical solution by surface response analysis. The results of a statistical sorption modelling indicated that pH is a strong impact of the variables influencing the sorption of heavy metals. A relative effect between an initial concentration of heavy metals and bicarbonate(or K) concentration is dependent on solution condition. The sorption edge of heavy metals as function of pH shows sigmoidal curve, and a great increase in the range of pH 6~8. The sorption sequence among heavy metals is Cu>Pb>>Zn>Cd. The solution chemistry exerts greater influence on the sorption of heavy metals rather than the crystal chemistry of clay minerals. The potassium exerts some effect into a sorption competition with heavy metals. The research suggests that the statistical modeling is an effective method to demonstrate sorption results in three dimension and to reduce the effort of batch sorption experiment.

This study was done to evaluate the hardness, water sorption and solubility values of twelve well known composite resins, and to compare each other. For the hardness test, the specimens were made in cylinder form with 4mm in diameter and 2mm in thickness as a modification of the American Society for Testing and New Materials, 1966, and for water sorption and solubility tests, the specimens were prepared in same shape of 20mm in diameter and 0.5mm in thickness as a modification of the ADA Specification No. 12. The results were obtained as follow: 1. The hardness range were from 17.9 to 87.5 respectively. As time passed by, the noticable change was evident in early 12 hours. 2. Of the water sorption. the range was from 0.38 to 0.93. The significant change was appeared within 12 hours and on 3 day by 1 week except four brands. 3. Of the water solubility, the range was 0.06 to 0.16. The highest value was found within early 24 hours. 4. Generally, four brands could be chosen as preferable products of hardness. water sorption and solubility tests according to the ADA Specification No. 12.

In this study, sorption characteristics of thermally treated activated alumina (AA) for fluoride were investigated. Sorption experiments have been conducted in equilibrium and kinetic batch conditions. Also, effects of solution pH and anions on fluoride removal have been observed. The properties of thermally treated ( $700^{\circ}C$) activated alumina (AA700) and untreated activated alumina (UAA) were compared using field-emission scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. From the experiments using AA thermally treated at different temperatures (100, 300, 500, $700^{\circ}C$), it was found that at high fluoride concentrations (50, 100, 200 mg/L) the sorption capacity of thermally treated AA increased with increasing thermal treatment temperature. At an initial fluoride concentration of 200 mg/L, the sorption capacity of AA700 was 3.67 times greater than that of UAA. The BET analysis showed that the specific surface area of UAA was about 2 times larger than that of AA700. The XRD analysis indicated that UAA was composed of both boehmite (AlOOH) and bayerite ($Al(OH)_3$) while AA700 was $Al_2O_3$. The reason that fluoride sorption capacity of AA700 increased despite of decrease in specific surface area compared to UAA could be attributed to the change of crystal structure. The kinetic sorption test showed that fluoride sorption to AA700 arrived at equilibrium after 24 h. The equilibrium test demonstrated that the maximum sorption capacity of AA700 was 5.70 mg/g. Additional batch experiments indicated that fluoride sorption to AA700 was the highest at pH 7, decreasing at both acidic and basic solution pHs. Also, fluoride sorption to AA700 decreased in the presence of anions such as phosphate, nitrate, and carbonate. This study demonstrated that thermal treatment of AA at high temperature could increase its sorption capacity for fluoride.

Statement of problem. Among the physical properties of adhesion luting cement, the aspect that requires the most important factor is the degree of solubility and water sorption. Dissolution or an inadequate due to excessive water sorption inside the oral cavity compromises the while concurrently increasing the susceptibility to secondary dental caries. Susceptibility to dissolution and difficulty of removing remnant cement from the gingival sulcus have hindered the use of dental resin cement in the clinical practice, but the improved characteristics of newer generation resin cements have interest in and enabled resin cements to be widely used in adhesion of fixed prosthesis, such as laminate veneers and all-ceramic crowns. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the degrees of solubility and water sorption of a variety of resin cements widely used for clinical purposes with different curing methods. Material and methods. Self-curing resin cements, $Avanto^{(R)}$, $C&B^{TM}$ CEMENT and Superbond C&B cements comprised group 1, 2 and 3. The dual-curing resin cements $Panavian^{TM}$ F, $Calibra^{(R)}$ and $Variolink^{(R)}$ II were divided into groups 4, 5, and 6, respectively. The investigation was carried out using disc-shaped specimens as specified by ANSI/ADA Specification No. 27. The degree of water sorption, water solubility and lactic acid solubility of each test group was analyzed statistically leading to the following conclusion. Results. The degree of water sorption was shown to increase in the following order : group 6, 5, 4, 2, 1 and 3. There were significant differences between the water sorption of each group. Results of the degree of water solubility were shown to increase in the following order : group 6, 5, 4, 2, 1 and 3. Statistically significant differences were found between each group, with the exception of groups 1 and 3. Finally, the degree of lactic acid solubility was found to increase in the following order : group 6,5,4,2,3 and 1. Significant differences were found between each group. In general dual-curing resin cements displayed substantially lower values than self-curing resin cements with regard to water sorption, water solubility, and lactic acid solubility. Conclusions. From the results of this study, dual-curing resin cements show a significantly lower degree of water sorption and solubility than their self-curing counterparts. Clinically, when selecting resin cements, the product with a lower degree of water sorption and solubility are preferred. The results of this study indicate that the use-of dual-curing resin cements is preferable to self-curing cements.

An unsteady-state moisture diffusion through cellulosic fibers in paper was characterized from the moisture sorption experiment and the mathematical modeling. The sorption experiment was conducted by exposing thin dry paper specimens to a constant temperature-humidity environment. Oven dried blotting papers and filter papers were used as test samples and the gains of their weights were constantly monitored and recorded as a function of sorption time. For a mathematical approach, the moisture transport was assumed to be an one-dimensional diffusion in thickness direction through the geometrically symmetric structure of paper. The model was asymptotically simplified with a short-term approximation. It gave us a new insight into the moisture uptake phenomena as a function of square root of sorption time. The fiber-phase moisture diffusivities(FPMD) of paper samples were then determined by correlating the experimental data with the unsteady-state diffusion model obtained. Their values were found to be on the order of magnitude of $10^{-6}-10^{-7}cm^2$/min., which were equivalent to the hypothetical effective diffusion coefficients at the limit of zero porosity. The moisture sorption curve predicted from the model fairly agreed with that obtained from the experiment at some limited initial stages of the moisture uptake process. The FPMD value of paper significantly varied depending upon the current moisture content of paper. The mean FPMD was about 0.7-0.8 times as large as the short-term approximated FPMD.

Two antibiotics, doxycycline (doxy) and ciprofloxacin (cipro) were applied under a variety of conditions to silk, and to silk that had previously been hydrolyzed. FTIR-ATR analyses indicated that the drastic increase in sorption of antibiotics by hydrolyzed silk was attributable to both chemical and conformational changes that occurred on hydrolysis. A high sorption of doxy by hydrolyzed silk did not necessarily give a more infection-resistant material as determined by a zone of inhibition test. Conversely, the same hydrolysis considerably increased both sorption of cipro and zone of inhibition of cipro-treated silk dyed at 65$^{\circ}C$ and 85$^{\circ}C$.
