  • In this paper, we develop an active sonar signal synthesis model to analyze the detection performance of active sonar systems in a shallow water environment. Using this model, we synthesize the return signal of a bistatic sonar system at a typical operating frequency. This signal can be used to test proper active sonar signal processing techniques for real applications.

  • Target motion analysis with a sonar system in general uses a regular sampling time and thus obtains regular target information regardless of the target maneuver status. This often results in overconsumption of the limited sonar resources. We propose two methods of the IMM(interacting Multiple Model) PDAF algorithm for sonar resource management to improve target motion analysis performance and to save sonar resources in this paper. In the first method, two different process noise covariance which are used as mode sets are combined based on probability. In the second method, resource time which are processed from two mode sets is calculated based on probability and then considered as update time at next step. Performance of the proposed algorithms are compared with the other algorithms by a series of Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This paper is to analyze the effectiveness of multistatic sonar network based on detection performance. The multistatic sonar network is a distributed detection system that places a source and multi-receivers apart. So it needs a detection technique that relates to decision rule and optimization of sonar system to improve the detection performance. For this we propose a data fusion procedure using Bayesian decision and optimal sensor arrangement by optimizing a bistatic sonar. Also, to analyze the detection performance effectively, we propose the environmental model that simulates a propagation loss and target strength suitable for multistatic sonar networks in real surroundings. The effectiveness analysis on the multistatic sonar network confirms itself as a promising tool for effective allocation of detection resources in multistatic sonar system.

  • Target state estimation is a fundamental problem of the sonar signal processing. In this paper, the covariance analysis techniques are applied to enhance the performance of the target state estimation of a monopulse sonar system. MOST, the artificial target signal generator based on the highlight model is used to generate signals in various target states. The performance of the developed method has been evaluated by applying it to the various S/N. The enhanced performance of the covariance analysis method presented in this paper is discussed.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the acoustic detection performance for the deployment of the source and receiver positions of a bi-static sonar. In contrast with a mono-static sonar, a bi-static sonar has a large amount of computation and complexity for deployment. Therefore, in this study, we propose an assessment method that reduces the amount of computation while considering the variability of the ocean environment as a method to apply to the placement of the source and receiver of a bi-static sonar. First, we assume the representative ocean environment in the shallow and deep water. The signal excess is calculated with the source to receiver ranges and sensor depths. And the result is compared with the proposed assessment method of acoustic detection performance.

  • For effective bi-static sonar operation, detection performance analysis must be performed reflecting the characteristics of sound propagation due to the ocean environment and target information. However, previous studies analyzing bistatic sonar detection performance have either not considered the ocean environment and target characteristics or have been conducted using simplified approaches. Therefore, in this study, we compared and analyzed the bistatic detection performance in Yellow sea and Ulleung basin both with and without considering target characteristics. A numerical analysis model was used to derive an accurate bistatic target strength for the submarine-shaped target, and signal excess was calculated by reflecting the simulated target strength. As a result, significant changes in detection performance were observed depending on the source and receiver locations as well as the target strength.

  • We propose a method to generate the object-target identifier mapping information for system performance and effectiveness analysis of submarine engage system and verify the validity of the proposed method through experiments. In the submarine model of the engage simulator, the signal processing algorithm of the actual sonar system is installed. In the target information obtained through the sonar or signal processing process, the actual object information is not known, and the simulator does not provide such information. Therefore, in this study, we generated identifier mapping information for simulation post-analysis by using bearing, range, and speed of the target obtaind from sonar signal processing and the object collected.

  • In this paper the IMM(Interacting Multiple model) algorithm using the MGEKF(Modified Gain Extended Kalman Filter) which modes are variances of the process noises is proposed to enhance the performance of maneuvering target tracking with bearing and frequency measurements. The state are composed of relative position, relative velocity, relative acceleration and doppler frequency. The mode probability is calculated from the bearing and frequency measurements. The proposed algorithm is tested a series of computer simulation runs.

  • This paper summarizes a solution procedure for a large cylindrical structure mounted underneath a ship as a sonar. Vibration analysis of the water loaded structure is required to enhance the structural reliability as well as acoustic performance of the sonar. It is, however, often very difficult to solve such structures since they have many DOFs, considering the frequency of interest and the water-loading. The mode mapping method is proposed and verified to take into account the water-loading with the minimum DOF for the analysis. The cyclic symmetric method is then reviewed to show how the eigen properties of the full model can be obtained from the representative segment model. The solution procedure is finally proposed and applied successfully for a simplified water-loaded cylindrical array structure.
