The purpose of this study is to substitute water-based painting materials for the current solvent-based ones used in motor-repairing process to minimize the exposure of organic solvents to the painters. This study assessed the exposure of organic solvents to the painters using water-based and solvent-based painting materials and compared compositions, painting processes and the health hazards of the application of these alternative painting mate rials. The results of this study are as follows. 1. solvent-based painting materials used in motor-repairing process consist of various organic solvents, which consist primarily of toluene, xylene, ethyl benzene, ethyl methyl benzene, trimethyl benzene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, 2-ethoxy ethanol, 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate and toluene-2,4-diisocianate and the others. These organic solvents are known as health-hazardous substances. But water-based painting materials are high-solid, low-solvent one sand consist of such two organic solvents as 2-butoxy ethanol and 2-heptanone and the others. 2. The painters us ing solvent-based painting mate rials in motor-repairing process are exposed to various organic solvents which consist of toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, trimethyl benzene, 2-ethoxy ethanol, and 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate. But the painters using solvent-based ones are only exposed to 2-butoxy ethanol and 2-heptanone. 3. By using water-based painting materials in stead of solvent-based painting materials containing health-hazardous organic solvents, the exposure of such organic solvents in the painter's breathing zone can be largely prevented. 4. This study recommends water-based painting materials as substitutes for the current solvent-based ones used in motor-repairing process to minimize the exposure of organic solvents to the painters.
The effects of different dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) isomers, when used as matrix materials in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), were investigated in analyses of polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers. PEG polymers ranging from 400 to 8,000 Da were prepared in different DHB isomer matrices using solvent-based and solvent-free methods. PEG samples were detected only in matrices of 2,3-DHB, 2,5-DHB, and 2,6-DHB while the most intense peaks were observed using 2,6-DHB in both solvent-free and solvent-based preparations.
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are some of the most efficient electrochemical energy sources for transportation applications because of their clean, green, and high efficiency characteristics. The optimization of catalyst layer morphology is considered a feasible approach to achieve high performance of PEMFC membrane electrode assembly (MEA). In this work, we studied the effect of the solvent on the catalyst layer of PEMFC MEAs fabricated using the electrostatic spray deposition method. The catalyst ink comprised of Pt/C, a Nafion ionomer, and a solvent. Two types of solvent were used: isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and dimethylformamide (DMF). Compared with the catalyst layer prepared using IPA-based ink, the catalyst layer prepared with DMF-based ink had a dense structure because the DMF dispersed the Pt/C-Nafion agglomerates smaller and more homogeneously. The size distribution of the agglomerates in catalyst ink was confirmed through Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and the microstructure of the catalyst layer was compared using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). In addition, the electrochemical investigation was performed to evaluate the solvent effect on the fuel cell performance. The catalyst layer prepared with DMF-based ink significantly enhanced the cell performance (1.2 A cm-2 at 0.5 V) compared with that fabricated using IPA-based ink (0.5 A cm-2 at 0.5 V) due to the better dispersion and uniform agglomeration on the catalyst layer.

Conventional solvent-based polyurethane (PU) is well established for wide applications, such as textile treatments, surface coating, adhesive and so on. Due to the demands of safety, economic, and environmental protection, the solvent-based PU is restricted and has been phasing out and aqueous-based PU is becoming the world market trend, which is an environmental friendly product. The chemical resistance, physical and mechanical properties of aqueous-based PU are still not competible with solvent-based PU. Because of aqueous-based PU is a linear thermoplastic polymer with lower average molecular weight. Their improvements are normally performed by a post-curing reaction or a polymer hybridization to enhance the polymer cross-linking density. Hybridization of PU with aqueous-based epoxy resin or acrylate emulsion and then cured by a curing agent for improving the performance properties and reducing the cost of aqueous-based PU.Furthermore, a special function is added to aqueous-based PU increasing the application value, for examples, flame retardation, polymeric dyes, hydrophilic and etc.
This study reports on the influence of N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate ($PYR_{14}BF_4$) ionic liquid additive on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent based electrolytes against a carbon electrode. We used the mixture of ethylene carbonate/dimethoxyethane (1:1) as an organic solvent electrolyte and tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TEABF_4$) as a common salt. Using the $PYR_{14}BF$ ionic liquid as additive produced higher ionic conductivity in the electrolyte and lower interface resistance between carbon and electrolyte, resulting in improved capacitance. The chemical and electrochemical stability of the electrolyte was measured by ionic conductivity meter and linear sweep voltammetry. The electrochemical analysis between electrolyte and carbon electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
The electrochemical properties of lithium-sulfur batteries with binary electrolytes based on DME and DOL, TEGDME and DOL mixed solvent containing $LiClO_4$, LiTFSI, and LiTF salts were investigated. The ionic conductivity of 1M LiTFSI and $LiClO_4$ electrolytes based on TEGDME and DOL increased as the volume ratio of DOL solvent increased, because DOL effectively reduces the viscosity of the above electrolytes medium under the same salts concentration. The first discharge capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries in the DME and DOL-based electrolyte followed this order: LiTFSI (1,000 mAh/g) > LiTF (850 mAh/g) > $LiClO_4$ (750 mAh/g). In case of the electrolyte based on TEGDME and DOL, the first discharge capacity of batteries followed this order: $LiClO_4$ (1,030 mAh/g) > LiTF (770 mAh/g) > LiTFSI (750 mAh/g). The cyclic efficiency of lithium-sulfur batteries at 1M $LiClO_4$ electrolytes is higher than that of batteries at other lithium salts-based electrolytes. Lithium-sulfur battery showed discharge capacity of 550 mAh/g until 20 cycles at all electrolytes based on DME and DOL solvent. By contrast, the discharge capacity of batteries was about 450 mAh/g at 1M LiTFSI and LiTF electrolytes based on TEGDME and DOL solvent after 20 cycles.
In previous report, we presented that petroleum based solvents used in dry cleaning shop was almost similar to stoddard solvent defined by ACGIH and NIOSH, and the occupational exposure standard of stoddard solvent could be used in total exposure assessment of those solvents. The specific aim of the this study was to evaluate of the solvent exposure used in commercial dry cleaning shops by using occupational exposure standard of stoddard solvent. We conducted first survey of 8 self-employed dry cleaning shops and 5 factory type dry cleaning shops from July to August, and second survey of the same shops from October to November in 2002. The exposure concentration to the solvent during loading and unloading activity of vented dry cleaning machine was 489.2ppm(GM), 270.3ppm(GM), respectively, which was almost excursion limit(500ppm) of ACGIH, and exceed the ceiling limit(312ppm) of NIOSH. The time-weighted average (TWA) worker exposure to the solvent was 21.3ppm(GM) at self-employed shops, 20.7ppm(GM) at factory type shops on first survey, and 31.1ppm(GM), 33.7ppm(GM), respectively on second survey. The TWA exposure concentration of workers with spotting and cleaning machine operating job was 25.4ppm(GM), which was 2.9 times higher than the TWA exposure concentration, 8.8ppm(GM) of press workers. All TWA exposure concentrations was lower than OEL(100ppm) of stoddard solvent. We found that the most heavy exposure process at dry cleaning was loading, unloading process, and the vent of dry cleaning machine was the main emission source for workers exposure to petroleum based solvent.
Alcohol-based solvents including ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) are investigated instead of isopropanol (IPA), which is a common solvent for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), as an alternative solvent for preparing the catalyst slurry with PTFE binder. As a result, the performance at 0.2 A/㎠ from the single cells from using catalyst slurries based on EtOH and TBA showed very similar value to that from the slurry using IPA, which implies the EtOH and TBA can be used as a solvent for the catalyst slurry. It is also confirmed by the very close values of the total resistance of the membrane electrode assemblies from the slurries using different solvents. In the energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) image, the shape of crack and dispersion of PTFE are changed according to the vapor pressure of the solvent.

The degree of electrophilic interference on the solvolytic reactions of model substrates has been studied in fluorinated alcohol solvent mixtures. With variation of solvent composition of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol(HFP) and 2-propanol (PrOH) mixtures, the magnitude of electrophilic solvent assistance was changed inversely with the degree of nucleophilic solvent assistance. The contribution of electrophilic interference for 2-adamantyl tosylate showed higher than tert-butyl chloride in HFP-PrOH mixtures. Through a correlation of nucleophilic solvent assistance and electrophilic solvent assistance based on the method of double differences, HFP-PrOH mixture showed a big discrepancy from non-fluorinated alcohol systems.
