  • We get one theorem which shows existence of solutions for one-dimensional jumping problem involving p-Laplacian and Dirichlet boundary condition. This theorem is that there exists at least one solution when nonlinearities crossing finite number of eigenvalues, exactly one solutions and no solution depending on the source term. We obtain these results by the eigenvalues and the corresponding normalized eigenfunctions of the p-Laplacian eigenvalue problem when 1 < p < ${\infty}$, variational reduction method and Leray-Schauder degree theory when $2{\leq}$ p < ${\infty}$.

  • In this study, seismic analysis is performed using simplified method, analytical solution and numerical analysis based on one-dimensional seismic site response analysis. The results show that analytical solution of tunnel response is predicted more conservative than numerical solution. And simplified method is not appropriate for seismic analysis of tunnel response. In addition, it is reasonable to determine shear-modulus reduction ratio performing seismic site response analysis to consider ground nonlinear-behavior.

  • Nanosize tungsten powder was synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method through a solution containing ammonium metatungstate hydrate $[(NH_4)_6W_{12}O_{39}{\cdot}H_2O]$ and reduction treatment. It was expected the improvement of mechanical properties due to increasing surface free energy and surface activity. Starting solutions with each concentration, reaction temperature and reduction treatment were significantly influenced on the formation of tungsten size and phase. It was found that particle size was decreased with concentration of starting solution and surface tension were decreased. The particle size was increased at thermal decomposition temperature above $600^{\circ}C$ by neck growth of interparticles. Tungsten particles were formed by reduction reaction in atmosphere of hydrogen gas at the temperature above $700^{\circ}C$.

  • Reduction methods for large structural systems have been reviewed. Mai emphasis is put on the dynamic reduction. Recently, the computing resources and technologies have been expanded so fast that the huge matrices Invoked In the analysis of structural system can be processed without serious difficulties. For most users, however, the computer facilities are limited and the system reductions in some forms are required. The reduction procedure in static problems is simple and straightforward. The major task is the book-keeping in computations. In dynamic problems and structural optimization. however. the problem is much more complicated. The problem is, in general, nonlinear and hence the exact solution is not available. Therefore, approximate solutions are sought in an iterative manner. A proper convergence criterion needs to be employed in order to get an accurate solution efficiently. Several research works have been reported fer the structural optimization combined with system reductions.

  • Nonwoven fabric was treated with chitosan solution to impart antimicrobial activities by pad-dry method. Antimicrobial activity was measured by Shake Flask Method. Two chitosans of different molecular weight(Mw) with similar degree of deacetylation(DDA) were used : ca. 1,800(chitosan oligomer : DDA 84%) and 180,000(DDA 86%). Chitosan oligomer displayed high antimicrobial activity against P. vulgaris at 0.01%, S. aureus and E. coli at 0.05% treatment concentration, shelving above 90% of reduction rate. Chitosan of Mw 180,000 was effective against S. aureus, E. coil and P. vulgaris at 0.05% treatment concentration, showing almost 100% reduction rate. While chitosan of Mw 180,000 shelved reduction rate above 75% against K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa at 0.5% treatment concentration, chitosan oligomer was not effective against them. Fabrics become stiffer and less air permeable as treatment concentration increases. Liquid strike-through time of the sample treated with 0.5% chitosan oligomer solution (3.0 sec) was comparable with a hydrophilic finished sample commercially available(2.6 sec).

  • Effect of NiO addition on microstructure, stability of tetragonal phase and mechanical properties was investigated. (Y, Ni)-TZP solid solution was obtained by pressureless sintering. The fracture toughness was increased by solid solution of NiO. Neither reaction phase nor glassy phase was observed at the grain boundaries. From these results, it was determined that solid solution of NiO was destabilized tetragonal phase of Y-TZP. Y-TZP/Ni nanocomposite that contained nano-sized Ni particles was also fabricated by internal reduction method. Some evaluations and discussions were carried out for both (Y, Ni)-TZP solid solution and Y-TZP/Ni nanocomposite.

  • Network reconfiguration is an operation task, and consists in the determination of the switching operations such to reach the minimum loss conditions of the distribution network. In this paper, an effective heuristic based switch scheme for loss minimization is given for the optimization of distribution loss reduction and a solution approach is presented. The solution algorithm for loss minimization has been developed based on the two stage solution methodology. The first stage of this solution algorithm sets up a decision tree which represent the various switching operations available, the second stage applies a proposed technique called cyclic best first search. Therefore, the solution algorithm of proposed method can determine on-off switch statuses for loss reduction, with a minimum computational effort.

  • This paper presents a new economic dispatch algorithm to improve the unit commitment solution while guaranteeing the near optimal solution without reducing calculation speed. The conventional economic dispatch algorithms have the problem that it is not applicable to the unit commitment formulation due to the frequent on/off state changes of units during the unit commitment calculation. Therefore, piecewise linear iterative method have generally been used for economic dispatch algorithm for unit commitment. In that method, the approximation of the generator cost function makes it hard to obtain the optimal economic dispatch solution. In this case, the solution can be improved by introducing a inverse of the incremental cost function. The proposed method is tested with sample system. The results are compared with the conventional piecewise linear iterative method. It is shown that the proposed algorithm yields more accurate and economical solution without calculation speed reduction.

  • A torsional vibration analysis of a multi-stage reduction gear box connected to a gas turbine system is presented. For a free vibration analysis the Modified Hibner Branch Method, so called "Blank Matrix Method", and the .lambda.-Matrix Method are used in the modeling and the eigenvalue solution, respectively. Also, a short circuit forced analysis of the system is performed, utilizing the energy method modeling. It is shown that the results of the free vibration analysis have the same tendency as those of the short circuit analysis. analysis.
