  • Two dimensional computer simulation of solidification behavior using FDM as simulation tool was applied to AI-bronze casting. By the comparison of computer simulation with the experimental results, it was showed that the final shrinkage position and solidification time are good accordance with results of computer simulation. It is expected that this software will be widely applied to casting design or rise ring for directional solidification.

  • The solidification cracking susceptibilities of AI-Mg-Si alloy laser welds were assessed using the self-restraint tapered specimen crack test. The cracking susceptibility of 6061 and 6082 Al-Mg-Si alloy laser welds was substantially reduced when the filler wire containing high Si such as Al-12 wt.% Si (4047A) was used. The amount of eutectic was observed to affect the solidification cracking of Al-Mg-Si alloy laser welds. Abundant eutectic seems to heal the cracking and reduces the cracking susceptibility, while an initial increase in eutectic liquid leads to the increased cracking tendency.

In this study, wished to solve problem by saying contaminated sludge and tailing and heavy metals to do solidification using Magnesia phosphate cement. Confirmed through above experiment that magnesia is effect in solidification and stabilization of chromium and lead.

  • A numerical model for the solidification of binary mixture is proposed. Numerical model, which employs enthalpy method, is modified from Continuum model, that is, improved relation is proposed for the Enthalpy - Temperature - Concentration - Liquid Mass Fraction. One dimensional example was selected to verify the proposed model. The results show that the new relation can be applied successfully to the solidification or melting of binary mixture.

  • The most desirable method for the solution of solidification problems in castings must be the one which combines accuracy, simplicity, and low computer usage cost. The purpose of the present study is to develop a method which includes all these advantages. The purpose of the present research was approached by the introduction of two methods: (1) A pour-out test, employed with very high purity aluminum, for the purpose of obtaining accurate solidification data in L-sections; and (2) an numerical technique, using the cubic spline function for defining solidification curves.

  • The effect of an aluminum scrap addition ratio on the tensile and solidification cracking properties of the AC4A aluminum alloy in the as-cast state and heat-treated state were investigated in this study. Generally, the expected problem of using scrap in aluminum casting is an increase of hydrogen and Fe element inside the aluminum melt. Another issue is an oxide film which has a weak interface with the molten aluminum and acts as potent nucleation sites for internal porosity and crack initiation. Solidification cracking is one of the critical defects that must be resolved to produce high quality castings. A conventional evaluation method for solidification cracking is a relative and qualitative analysis method which does not provide quantitative data on the thermal stress in the solidification process. Therefore, a newly designed solidification cracking test apparatus was used in this study, and the device can provide quantitative data. As a result, after conducting experiments with different scrap addition ratios (0%, 20%, 35%, 50%), the tensile strengths and elongations in the as-cast state were 214, 187.7, 182.1 and 170.4MPa and 4.6%, 3.4%, 3.1% and 2.3%, respectively. In the case of the T6 heat-treated state, the tensile strengths and elongations were 314.9, 294.6, 293.1 and 271.1MPa and 5.4%, 4.6%, 3.8% and 3.1%, respectively. The strength of the solidification cracking was 3.1, 2.4, 2.2and 1.6MPa as the scrap addition ratio increases.

TiAl-Nb 합금의 고온상변태와 일방향응고에 관한 연구 (Study on High Temperature Phase Transformation and Directional Solidification of TiAl-Nb Alloy)

  • Phase transformation phenomenon at high temperature was investigated by using designed TiAl-Nb alloys with addition of the ${\beta}$ stabilizer. Examination of dendritic morphologies in arc-melted button ingot could reveal the crystallography of the primary solidification phase. It was found that the addition of ${\beta}$ stabilizer(Nb) shifted the high temperature region of the binary Ti-Al phase diagram to the high Al composition side so that ${\beta}$ phase forms as a primary crystal even at higher Al composition compared with the binary Ti-Al system. The ${\beta}$ was found to be the primary solidification phase for alloys with Al content less than about 52 at.%. The composition of ${\beta}$ solidification in Ti-Al-Nb ternary system could be determined from the partial liquidus projection which was constructed by observing the microstructure of arc-melted buttons. The Ti-46Al-(6, 8)Nb composition was selected for ${\beta}$ solidification and the directional solidification was performed by a floating zone-type DS apparatus at the growth rate 30 mm/hr respectively.

  • Co base superalloys have been widely used for the parts of gas turbine due to their excellent strength, thermal fatigue, oxidation resistance and weldability at high temperature. In this study, directional solidifications were carried out at various solidification rates, including $0.5{\sim}300{\mu}m/s$ in the Co base superalloy FSX-414. The cellular interface were formed at a low solidification rate, $1{\mu}m/s$, and the dendritic interface was found at higher solidification rates, $5{\sim}300{\mu}m/s$. As the spacing of dendrite structure decreased, the size and spacing of eutectics decreased. Dendrite arm spacing decreased with increasing solidification rates and temperature gradient. It was interesting to find the $M_{23}C_{6}$ eutectic microstructure formed between $\gamma$ dendrites. Composition analysis showed that Cr and W were segregated severely between the dendrites, which resulted in the formation of Cr-rich $M_{23}C_{6}$ and W-rich MC carbides.

  • Solidification of aluminum alloys under moderate pressures has been investigated. Interfacial heat transfer coefficient at the casting/mold interface varies with time after pouring the molten metal into the die cavity, and therefore plays an important role in determining solidification sequence. The heat transfer coefficients were evaluated by using an inverse problem method, based on the measured temperature distribution. The calculated heat transfer coefficients were used for solidification simulation in the squeeze casting process. The effects of applied pressure and positions of insulation in the mold have also been investigated on solidification microstructures and on the formation of macrosegregation of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloys.
