  • The solid-state reference electrodes made of polyaniline-coated MnO2 (SSRE-PAM) and their electrochemical characteristics were studied in simulated concrete pore solutions (SCPS) containing 0 and 3.5% NaCl. Saturated calomel electrodes (SCE) have been used to conduct electrochemical studies on the stability behavior of SSRE-PAM. Open circuit potential (OCP) and potentiodynamic polarization techniques were used to assess the corrosion performance of steel rebar exposed in SCPS with 0 and 3.5% NaCl using SSRE-PAM. The results demonstrate that the SSRE-PAM was capable of identifying steel rebar in a concrete environment that was either passive or active. Potentiodynamic polarization parameters such as Ecorr and Icorr for steel rebar in SCPS containing 0 and 3.5%)NaCl are greater than that of the passive condition (0% NaCl). All the studies validate the importance of using SSRE-PAM for corrosion monitoring applications in concrete structures.

  • The application of polymer composite electrolyte in all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery (ASSLSBs) can guarantee high energy density and improve the interface contact between electrolyte and electrode, which has a broader application prospect. However, the inherent insulation of the sulfur-cathode leads to a low electron/ion transfer rate. Carbon materials with high electronic conductivity and electrolyte materials with high ionic conductivity are usually selected to improve the electron/ion conduction of the composite cathode. In this work, PEO-LiTFSI-LLZO composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) with high ionic conductivity was prepared. The ionic conductivity was 1.16×10-4 and 7.26×10-4 S cm-1 at 20 and 60℃, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite sulfur cathode was prepared with Sulfur, reduced graphene oxide and composite polymer electrolyte slurry (S-rGO-CPEs). In addition to improving the ion conductivity in the cathode, CPEs also replaces the role of binder. The influence of different contents of CPEs in the cathode material on the performance of the constructed battery was investigated. The results show that the electrochemical performance of the all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery is the best when the content of the composite electrolyte in the cathode is 40%. Under the condition of 0.2C and 45℃, the charging and discharging capacity of the first cycle is 923 mAh g-1, and the retention capacity is 653 mAh g-1 after 50 cycles.

  • A SOx sensor using NASICON electrolyte was developed for monitoring of air pollution. The following galvanic cell with $Na_{2}SiO_{3}(Pt)$ reference electrode was assembled : Pt | $Na_{2}SiO_{3}$ | NASICON | $Na_{2}SO_{4}$ | Pt, $SO_{2}$, air $Na_{2}SO_{4}$ was used as an indicator electrode to protect NASICON electrolytes from chemical reaction with $SO_{2}$. The EMFs were measured after injecting $SO_{2}$ in the initial concentrations range of $5{\sim}95ppm$ at $400{\sim}550^{\circ}C$. The measured and calculated potentials were in good agreement above $500^{\circ}C$. However, the cells were unstable below $500^{\circ}C$, most likely due to incomplete attainment of chemical equilibrium. Response time was within 10 min. Based on the stability and response time of this cell, the NASICON solid electrolyte with $Na_{2}SiO_{3}(Pt)$ as the reference electrode and $Na_{2}SO_{4}$ (Pt)as the indicator electrode showed the possibility of a reliable, inexpensive commercial solid-state SOx sensor.

  • A solid state ion sensor module has been developed and evaluated for hydroponic nutrients analysis. The sensor module consisted of five ion-selective electrodes (ISE) fabricated by screen-printing technology. The electrochemical responses of ion sensors for nitrate, ammonium, potassium, calcium, and pH were measured with specially designed 7-channel low voltage signal transducers. The analytical characteristics of the sensors were comparable with those of conventional ISE sensors. The solid state ion sensors exhibit linear relationships over five concentration decades. Detection limit of the sensors were $5.6{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}1.6{\times}10^{-7}M$ depends on ions. Performance test results showed that relative errors of measured ion concentrations were less than 5% for $NO_3{^-},\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+}$ ion, and pH. The concentration of $NO_3{^-},\;NH_4{^+},\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+}$, and pH ion in standard solution and nutrient solutions could be determined by direct potentiometric measurements without any conditioning before measurements.

  • PRAM (Phase change Random Access Memory) is one of the most promising candidates for next generation Non-volatile Memories. The Phase change material has been researched in the field of optical data storage media. Among the phase change materials, $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$(GST) is very well known for its high optical contrast in the state of amorphous and crystalline. However, the characteristics required in solid state memory are quite different from optical ones. In this study, the structural properties of GST thin films with bottom electrode were investigated for PRAM. The 100-nm thick GST films were deposited on TiN/Si and TiAlN/Si substrates by RF sputtering system. In order to characterize the crystal structure and morphology of these films, we performed x-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

  • This research used solid waste from sugarcane production, named bagasse, as raw material for a functional carbon electrode. The bagasse was carbonized to produce carbon powder and, following activation with water vapor at 700℃. The activated carbon was doped with N and S to improve its electrochemical properties by treating it with thiourea precursor and heating it at 850℃ under nitrogen flow to produce N/S-doped carbon (NSCE). The produced carbon was then characterized to understand the specific diffraction pattern, molecular vibrations, and surface morphology. The result found that the NSCE showed two broad diffraction peaks at 23° and 43°, corresponding to [002] and [100] crystal planes following JCPDS75-1621. FTIR spectra showed some O-H, C-H, C-O, and C=C peaks. Peaks of C=N, C-N, and S-H demonstrate the presence of N/S within the NSCE. Raman analysis revealed that N/S doping caused structure defects within the single C6 layer networks, providing carbon vacancies (VC••••) because of C replacement by N (N'C) and S (S"C). Meanwhile, XPS analysis showed N/S introduction to the C network by revealing peaks at 168.26 eV and 169.55 eV, corresponding to S2p3/2 and S2p1/2, and 171.95 eV corresponds to C-SO3-C, indicating the presence of S within the thiol group attached to the carbon. Meanwhile, N1s are revealed at 402.4 eV and 405.5 eV, confirming pyrrolic nitrogen (N-5) and quaternary nitrogen (N-Q). The electrochemical analysis found that the reaction within the prepared-NSCE/NaClO4/Na was reversible, with an onset potential of 0.1 V vs. Na/Na+, explaining the intercalation and deintercalation of sodium ions. The sodium battery full cell showed an excellent battery performance with an initial charging-discharging capacity of 720 mAh g-1 and 570 mAh g-1, respectively, at 0.2C. Meanwhile, a cycling test showed the average Coulombic efficiency of 84.4% and capacity retention of 57% after 50 cycles.

  • A solid-state high power torch with inter-electrode insert (IEI) was developed to treat solid waste (for example, incinerated ash), and it's operation characteristics were obtained in the plasma facility test for waste treatment. According to torch test from this study, at the non-transferred mode voltage is increased by gas volume proportionally, and at the transferred mode it is not affected to voltage change. Especially arc voltage is sustained stable at the range of 10% of total Fe in slag. In addition, Electrical conductivity is 0.05~0.25${\Omega}^{-1}cm^{-1}$, torch efficiency is 75~85% and Erosion rate is 2${\times}10^{-6}~6{\times}10^{-6}$ kg/s.

  • The nitrogen oxides, NO and $NO_2$, abbreviated usually as NOx, emitted from combustion facilities such as power plants and automobiles are the typical air-pollutants causing acid rain and photochemical smog. In order to solve the NOx-related pollution problems effectively, we need efficient techniques to monitor NOx in the combustion exhausts and in environments. Development of solid-state electrochemical devices for detecting NOx is demonstrated based on various combination of solid electrolytes and auxiliary sensing materials. The object of this research is to develop various sensor performance for solid state amperometric sensor, and to test gas sensor performance manufactured. So we try to present a guidance for developing amperometric gas sensor. We concentrated on development of manufacturing process and performance test. Amperometric Nitrogen dioxide sensor was fabricated using NASICON and an $NaNO_2$ layer deposited on the counter electrode. The current response was almost linear with Nitrogen dioxide concentration in the range 1-350 ppb at $150^{\circ}C$.

  • A programmable metallization cell (PMC) memory structure with copper-saturated GeTe solid electrolyte films doped by nitrogen was prepared on a TiW bottom electrode by a co-sputtering technique at room temperature. The $Ge_{45}Te_{55}$ solid electrolyte films deposited with various $N_2$/Ar flow ratios showed an increase of crystallization temperature and especially, the electrolyte films deposited at $N_2$/Ar ratios above 30% showed a crystallization temperature above $400^{\circ}C$, resulting in surviving in a back-end process in semiconductor memory devices. The device with a 200 nm thick $Cu_{1-x}(Ge_{45}Te_{55})_x$ electrolyte switches at 1 V from an "off " state resistance, $R_{off}$, close to $10^5$ to an "on" resistance state, Ron, more than 20rders of magnitude lower for this programming current.
