  • In general, combustion characteristic of hybrid propulsion was shown with the regression rate depending on only massflow rate of oxidizer But this empirical relation was not represented well effect of the thermo-chemical properties of solid fuel. So, in this study, the combustion characteristics was studied with the mass transfer number(B number) of solid fuel instead of regression rate with various fuel. The PMMA, PP, and PE were used as fuel, and gas oxygen as oxidizer in this experiment. The mass flowrate of gas oxigen was controlled by the several chocked orifices that have different diameter, and the oxidizer supply range was $3.66\sim45.3g/sec$. As result, the empirical relation for mass flux of solid fuel was obtained with mass transfer number, and mass flux of oxidizer as follow; $\dot{m}^{'}_f\;=\;0.0175G^{0.55}B^{0.4}$.

  • Because of an emerging importance of clean energy, fuel cells are attract more attention due to their ability to produce high efficient power without any harmful emission. Fuel cells are energy conversion device with directly convert chemical energy into electrical energy by the chemical reactions, which have potential applications in automobile, spacecraft, stationary, industrial and home appliances. Recently there are gaining demand to develop an intermediate temperature fuel cell and available proton conductors at $200{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, which promising operating temperatures range for both material science and energy conversion processes. In this paper, we have reviewed electrochemical properties and current technology of solid state proton conductors. In addition, development of intermediate temperature fuel cell using the perovskite-type solid protonic conductor is also discussed.

  • The redox behaviors of anode-supported flat tube for solid oxide fuel cell has been studied. The mass change of the extruded NiO/YSZ anode flat tube during redox cycling was examined by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). The result of TGA was shown a rapidly mass change in the range of $455\;-\;670^{\circ}C$ and the reoxidation of the NiO/YSZ anode was almost completed at $750^{\circ}C$. The starting temperature of reoxidation and the maximum temperature of oxidation rate decreased with increasing the reoxidation cycle, which is attributed to the increased porosity caused by volume change. Bending strengths of the NiO/YSZ anode after redox cycling were 96 - 80 MPa and the bending strength decreased slightly with increasing the redox cycle. On the other hand, the bending strength of the NiO/YSZ anode with electrolyte showed 130 MPa after first redox cycling but decreased rapidly with increasing the redox cycle. From the results of the bending test and the microstructure observation, we conclude that the crack initiation of the electrolyte-coated NiO/YSZ anode was induced easily at interface of electrolyte/anode tube and propagated cross the electrolyte.

  • This study was performed to investigate solubility, dissolution rate and ash content of solid type fuel additive in gasoline and diesel in order to set up manufacturing standards. From the results, the unfiltered impurities were increased when the fuel additive was added on gasoline and diesel. Also, the unfiltered fuel additive was decreased with respect to increasing the pore size of the filter paper. When one gram of the fuel additive was dissolved in one liter of gasoline at room temperature, the best dissolution rate was about 2 hours. But, almost nothing was dissolved in diesel during 72 hours at $20^{\circ}C$ below zero. At the experiment of ash content, the gasoline which the fuel additive was melted in was showing 28 times more ash content than that was not including the fuel additive. Therefore, it seemed that almost all of ash content was caused by the fuel additive.

  • Firing test of the fuel grain for solid fuel ramjet with additives and ignition support material was conducted. Fuel grain consist of HTPB mixed with AP particle 15 wt.%, Boron particle 5 wt.%. To cause the short ignition delay, ignition support consist of $NC/BKNO_3$ and composite propellant was coated to the fuel grain. An oxidant gas having a controlled temperature, pressure and oxygen composition close to the air condition in the ramjet combustor was supplied using the Ethanol blended $H_2O_2$ gas generator. Gas was set to flow at a mass flow rate of 150 g/s and mass flux of $200kg/m^2s$ in the grain port. Through the test, ignition support operated well and ignition delay of 0.5. During the test, stable chamber pressure with 8 bar and high combustion efficiency of 0.86 was confirmed.

  • We have developed a $kW_e$ class liquid fuel based solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system. Our final target is to develop the 1 $kW_e$ diesel based SOFC system for residential power generator(RPG). In this study, we present the conceptual design of SOFC system. System is composed of hot-box and cold-box. Planar typed SOFC stack, heat exchanger, combustor for stack tail gas, and fuel processor, such as fuel reformer and desulfurizer, are contained in the hot-box. And several balance of plants(BOP), such as fuel suppliers and controller, are contained in the cold-box. Before the SOFC system fabrication, we have already operated the selfsustaining fuel processor, and heat exchange of all heat-related components is simulated using ASPEN HYSYS, because heat maintenance and management in hot-box are important for stable operation of SOFC system. The self-sustained fuel processor was successfully operated for about 250 hours, and heat exchange is enough to operate the SOFC system.

  • This study introduced a treatment process that was developed to treat Indonesian low-rank coal with high-ash content, which has the same characteristics as residual coal from the biosolubilization process. The treatment process includes separation of ash, solid-liquid separation, pelletizing, and drying. To reduce the ash content, flotation was performed using 4-methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) as frother, and kerosene, waste oil, and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) as collectors. The increasing amount of collector had an effect on combustible coal recovery and ash reduction. After flotation, a filter press, extruder, and an oven drier were used to make a dried coal pellet. Then another coal pellet was made using asphalt as a binder. The compressive strength and friability of the coal pellets were tested and compared.

  • SOFC (Solid oxide fuel cell) has an advantage in the term of fuel flexibility, comparing with other kinds of fuel cells. In SOFC and fuel reformer cooperation system, the reformate gas with the various $H_2$/CO ratios is delivered into the anode of SOFC. In this situation, electrochemical oxidation reactions of the reformate gas in the anode are complex and competitive. In this paper, the effects of the composition of $H_2$ and CO on the overall electrochemical oxidation at Ni-YSZ anode are studied by testing the open circuit voltage (OCV) and current-voltage characteristics of single cells.

  • Chloromethylated polysulfone(CMPSf) and a number of mono- and diamine compounds were used to prepare anion-exchange membranes(AEMs) and an ionomer binder solution. The properties of the AEMs were investigated such as $OH^-$ conductivity, water content and dimension stability. Chloromethylation and amination of PSf were optimized in terms of the properties. Membrane-electrode assemblies were fabricated using anion-exchange membranes and the ionomer binder for solid alkaline fuel cells and direct borohydride fuel cells.
