  • Bullets flying with a light from the back are called "tracers". Tracers are ignited by the combustion gas of the propellant and emit bright light that allows the shooter to visually trace the flight path. Therefore, tracers mark the firing point for allies to assist shooters to hit target quickly and accurately. Conventional tracers are constructed with a mixture of an oxidizing agent, raw metal, and organic fuel. Upon ignition, the inside of the gun can be easily contaminated by the by-products, which can lead to firearm failure during long-term shooting. Moreover, there is a fire risk such as forest fires due to residual flames at impact site. Therefore, it is necessary to develop non-combustion type luminous material; however, this material must still use the heat generated from the propellant, so-called "thermoluminescence (TL)". This study aims to compare the TL emission of Dy3+, La3+ and Ho3+ doped MgB4O7 phosphors prepared by solid state reaction. The crystal structures of samples were determined by X-ray diffraction and matched with the standard pattern of MgB4O7. Luminescence of various doses (200 ~ 15,000 Gy) of gamma irradiated Dy3+, La3+ and Ho3+ (at different concentrations of 5, 10, 15 and 20 %) doped MgB4O7 were recorded using a luminance/color meter. The intensity of TL yellowish (CIE x = 0.401 ~ 0.486, y = 0.410 ~ 0.488) emission became stronger as the temperature increased and the total gamma-ray dose increased.

  • Using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a polymer host, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a plasticizer, potassium iodide and iodine as sources of $I^-/{I_3}^-$ PEO-PEG-KI/$I_2$ polymer gel electrolytes were prepared. Based on the polymer gel electrolytes, solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell(DSSC)s were fabricated. The content of PEG in the electrolyte was changed from 0 to 85%. The electrolyte showed self-supporting form through whole range of the PEG content. As the PEG content increased, the ionic conductivity and ${I_3}^-$ diffusivity increased and the light-to electrical energy conversion efficiency increased under irradiation of 100 $mWcm^{-2}$ simulated sunlight.

  • In order to meet the requirements of faster speed and higher packing density for devices in the field of semiconductor manufacturing, the development of Cu/Low k device material is explored for use in multi-layer interconnection. SiOC(-H) thin films containing alkylgroup are considered the most promising among all the other low k candidate materials for Cu interconnection, which materials are intended to replace conventional Al wiring. Their promising character is due to their thermal and mechanical properties, which are superior to those of organic materials such as porous $SiO_2$, SiOF, polyimides, and poly (arylene ether). SiOC(-H) thin films containing alkylgroup are generally prepared by PECVD method using trimethoxysilane as precursor. Nano voids in the film originating from the sterichindrance of alkylgroup lower the dielectric constant of the film. In this study, methyltriphenylsilane containing bulky substitute was prepared and characterized by using NMR, single-crystal X-ray, GC-MS, GPC, FT-IR and TGA analyses. Solid-state NMR is utilized to investigate the insoluble samples and the chemical shift of $^{29}Si$. X-ray single crystal results confirm that methyltriphenylsilane is composed of one Si molecule, three phenyl rings and one methyl molecule. When methyltriphenylsilane decomposes, it produces radicals such as phenyl, diphenyl, phenylsilane, diphenylsilane, triphenylsilane, etc. From the analytical data, methyltriphenylsilane was found to be very efficient as a CVD or PECVD precursor.

  • $Dy^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$-codoped $SrWO_4$ phosphor thin films were deposited on sapphire substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering by changing the growth and thermal annealing temperatures. The results show that the structural and optical properties of the phosphor thin films depended on the growth and thermal annealing temperatures. All the phosphor thin films, irrespective of the growth or the thermal annealing temperatures, exhibited tetragonal structures with a dominant (112) diffraction peak. The thin films deposited at a growth temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and a thermal annealing temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ showed average transmittances of 87.5% and 88.4% in the wavelength range of 500-1100 nm and band gap energy values of 4.00 and 4.20 eV, respectively. The excitation spectra of the phosphor thin films showed a broad charge transfer band that peaked at 234 nm, which is in the range of 200-270 nm. The emission spectra under ultraviolet excitation at 234 nm showed an intense emission peak at 572 nm and several weaker bands at 479, 612, 660, and 758 nm. These results suggest that the $SrWO_4$: $Dy^{3+}$, $Eu^{3+}$ thin films can be used as white light emitting materials suitable for applications in display and solid-state lighting.

  • To satisfy the operational requirements of surveillance radar and the operational concept of a ship combat system, an active-array-type antenna was designed using solid-state transmitters and receivers. The arrangement of the constituent electronic components of the antenna system, considerably large in size, and therefore, the antenna needs to be housed in a box. The rotational antenna system installed on a ship mast is installed in a sealed housing to protect the interior equipment from environmental conditions. The outer shape of the housing is that the antenna should be capable of rotating normally despite strong winds. Furthermore, in recent times, designs with low radar cross section (RCS) have attracted attention from the viewpoint of improving the stealth of the ship. In this light, four types of models are proposed for the outer shape design of the antenna system, and they are investigated from the viewpoint of low RCS design as well as wind load.

  • Hydroxypropyl chitin(HPCH) was prepared from chitin by reacting it with propylene oxide. The formation of liquid crystalline character of HPCH was investigated using halogenated organic solvents. Solid state $^{13}C$ NMR spectra for chitin and HPCH confirmed the incorporation of hydroxypropyl moiety. The degree of substitution of HPCH was around 0.8 as detected by elemental analysis. WAXD patterns of chitin and HPCH showed that an incorporation of hydroxypropyl unit in chitin contributed to reducing the crystallinity and enhancing the solubility in organic solvents. Polarized light microscopic pictures of concentrated HPCH solution showed that HPCH formed cholesteric liquid crystalline character at about 25w/v% solution in dichloroacetic acid and 1, 2-dichloroethane. Inherent viscosity of HPCH solution in a mixed solvent showed a transient decrease.

  • Compression work on a pyrite powder has been carried out using energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD) with Mao-Bell type diamond anvil cell (DAC) and synchrotron radiation(SR) at room temperature. It has been reported the bulk moduli of pyrite show the large variations depending on the experimental conditions as well as the apparatus used. Thus, two kinds of sample in different pressure transmitting media of both NaCl and MgO powder emerged in alcoholic fluids were subjected to measure their compressibilities. Bulk moduli thus obtained are 138.9 GPa and 198.2 GPa, respectively, and this result contradicts to the anticipated values according to the hydrostaticity conditions of the sample chamber. This might be due to the alcoholic fluids phase transition mainly with the side effects from the difference of both solid state detector (SSD) used and E*d value applied. All experiments were performed at the Beam Line 1B2 of Pohang Light Source (PLS).

  • LED scraps consisting of highly crystalline GaN and their leaching behavior are comprehensively investigated for hydro-metallurgical recovery of rare metals. Highly stable GaN renders the leaching of the LED scraps extremely difficult in ordinary acidic and basic media. More favorable state can be obtained by way of high temperature solid-gas reaction of GaN-$Na_2CO_3$ powder mixture, ball-milled thoroughly at room temperature and subsequently oxidized under ambient air environment at $1000-1200^{\circ}C$ in a horizontal tube furnace, where GaN was effectively oxidized into gallium oxides. Stoichiometry analysis reveals that GaN is completely transformed into gallium oxides with Ga contents of ~73 wt%. Accordingly, the oxidized powder can be suitably leached to ~96% efficiency in a boiling 4 M HCl solution, experimentally confirming the feasibility of Ga recycling system development.

  • A series of $Sr_{1-x}Ca_xGa_2S_4:Ce,Na$ phosphors have been synthesized by solid-state reaction. The photoluminescence and structural properties of $Sr_{1-x}Ca_xGa_2S_4:Ce,Na$ have been examined. The $Sr_{1-x}Ca_xGa_2S_4:Ce,Na$ phosphors have a strong absorption at 400 nm, which is the emission wavelength of a violet light emitting diode (LED). The emission peaks of $SrGa_2S_4:Ce,Na$are located at 448 nm and 485 nm. The partial replacement of Sr by Ca in $Sr_{1-x}Ca_xGa_2S_4:Ce,Na$ causes a red shift of emission wavelengths. The $Sr_{1-x}Ca_xGa_2S_4:Ce,Na$ can be used as blue emitting phosphors pumped by the violet LED for fabricating the multi-band white LED.

  • In recent year, energy harvesting technologies from the ambient environments such as light, motion, wireless waves, and temperature again a lot of attraction form research community [1-5] due to its efficient solution in order to substitute for conventional power delivery methods, especially in wearable together with on-body applications. The drawbacks of battery-powered characteristic used in commodity applications lead to self-powered, long-lifetime circuit design. Thermoelectric generator, a solid-state sensor, is useful compared to the harvesting devices in order to enable self-sustained low-power applications. TEG based on the Seebeck effect is utilized to transfer thermal energy which is available with a temperature gradient into useful electrical energy. Depending on the temperature difference between two sides, amount of output power will be proportionally delivered. In this work, we illustrated a low-input voltage energy harvesting circuit applied discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) method for getting an adequate amount of energy from thermoelectric generator (TEG) for a specific wearable application. With a small temperature gradient harvested from human skin, the input voltage from the transducer is as low as 60mV, the proposed circuit, fabricated in a $0.6{\mu}m$ CMOS process, is capable of generating a regulated output voltage of 4.2V with an output power reaching to $40{\mu}W$. The proposed circuit is useful for powering energy to battery-less systems, such as wearable application devices.
