  • In the supersonic jet of a solid rocket motor, various noise is investigated. The purpose of this study is to attain and evaluating a design and manufacturing technique of the SRM noise reduction. In this study, the water is injected into the supersonic jet of the SRM to reduce the noise. Furthermore, the diffuser and stack are installed to suppress the SRM noise. Through the SRM ground tests, the noise is reduced approximately 20dBA with application of the diffuser/stack with water injection.

  • In the solid rocket motor (SRM), a thrust of rocket is generated by a nozzle so it is very important device. The nozzle of SRM is a condition of high temperature and high pressure so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. The liquid rocket propulsion systems (LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. This paper deal with the development of the oxy-acetylene torch tester and investigate the thermochemical erosion properties for the thermal insulation materials of the graphite rocket nozzle throat through the experiment. The results of experiments are compared with the results of Theoretical model and identify the key factors affecting of erosion. The results is in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The ground tests of the dual pulse solid rocket motors(SRM) were performed to prove the performance of the developed dual pulse solid rocket motors. To achieve dual pulse, pulse seperation device(PSD) and independent ignition systems were installed between the 1st pulse motor and the 2nd pulse motor. The three major development goals are as follow. First, the total impulse of the dual pulse SRM must be over 90% of the single SRM which has same envelopment and weight. Second, the ignition of the 2nd pulse motor can be started at any time between 0 and 60 seconds after termination of the 1st pulse motor. Last, the rupture disk of PSD must not be broken at the 1st pulse pressure, but be broken at below 30% of the 2nd pulse operating pressure. The results of the ground tests satisfied the development goals.

  • When someone measuring for pressure of a Solid Rocket Motor(SRM) at Static Firing Test, generally, used with pressure tube to be filled in Oil. But, if you used pressure tube with oil, you were worried about possibility of spilled oil when you measured pressure in SRM at high altitude environment. Because it usually connected at ignitor. In this paper, We described how to make a pressure tube without oil and matters to be attended to design it.

  • This work is to observe combustion characteristics depending on variation of the solid propellent grain configuration. The LRE (Liquid Rocket Engine) enables adjusting the thrust by controling the required fuel mass glow, but the SRM(Solid Rocket Motor)is not easy to adjust th thrust due to the difficulty of th fuel flow control by its combustion behavior even its configuration is simple. This difficulty can be partly solved by changing th size or the configuration of the propellant grain. In this study a proper grain configuration of a small solid rocket is selected through both the theoretical design and the experimental tests.

  • The solid rocket motor(SRM) consists of a motor case, igniter, propellants, nozzle, insulation, controller, and driving device. The liquid rocket propulsion systems(LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. The nozzle of SRM is high temperature condition and high velocity condition so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. This erosion occurs the change of nozzle throat and reduces thrust performance of rocket. The material of Rocket nozzle is minimization of erosion and insulation effect and endure the shear force, high temperature and high pressure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the erosion characteristics of solid rocket nozzles by each combustion time. Through the structure inspection of Graphite and C-C composite, identify the characteristics of the microstructure before and after erosion.

  • In this paper, we proposed a data structure to represent structural components of solid rocket motors (SRM) in an automated design program. To propose the data structure, we searched the necessary functions for the automated design program should have. In order to design the structural components of solid rocket motors sufficiently with a design program, it should have the functions to represent the shapes of the components, the drawing and analysis models, the design variables, various product structures, interferences, characteristic properties, design equations, and tightening sets. By modifying the data structure of an element object that is a general purpose data structure to represent a general component of a product, a new data structure was proposed to satisfy all the necessary functions with optimum. Finally, a design program for the structural components of solid rocket motors was developed successfully with the proposed data structure.

  • Generally Solid Rocket Motor(SRM) has advantages like this - safety, simplicity and flexibility in design and manufacturing process. However, once propellant grain shape and nozzle throat area are determined, modification of thrust magnitude is nearly impossible. Recently, methods for controlling the thrust magnitude of SRM are vigorously developed. This paper predicts internal ballistic performance variation, especially thrust of SRM by means of Linear Approximation according as chamber pressure or nozzle throat area is changed. The results predicted by the proposed method are good agreement with the those of exclusive Ballistic Performance Prediction Program(SPP).

  • This paper investigated the method to predict a thermal response of internal insulation in a solid rocket motor considering both thermal decomposition and ablation. Changes in properties due to the thermal decomposition, swelling of char layer and movement of decomposition gases inside the material were considered during a modeling. And radiative/convective heat flux from the exhaust gas were applied as boundary conditions, while the chemical ablation of the material surface is modeled with algebraic equations. Test SRM with thermocouples was solved for a validation purpose. The results showed that predicted temperatures have identical trends and values compared to the experimental values. And an error of predicted thermal destruction depth was around 0.1 mm.
