The objective of this study is to develop a systematic purification plant using the metabolism of aerobic microorganisms. This system is subsequently aerated and continuously removes suspended solids and settling sludges caused by aerating pressure at the bottom of a lower pipe (i.e., Continuous Removal of Suspended solids and Settling sludges, CRSS). The CRSS plants are brought out by introducing fine air bubbles into the liquid phase of a lower pipe in the bio-reactor. These plant uses aeration pipe, with multiple inlets to sweep the floor of bio-reactor tank, instead of the conventional scraper mechanisms. The principal advantage of this system is that it can continuously remove very small or light particles that settles completely within a short time. Once the particles have been floated to the surface, they can be moved into the pipe and collected in the settling tank by sequently aerated pressure. The experimental results shows that about 99.0% of the biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), 99.3% of the suspended solid(SS), 92.3% of the total nitrogen(T-N), 99.0% of the turbidity(TU), 100% of the total coliform(TC)and ammonia was respectively removed during aerobic digestion for 9 days. These result indicates that the CRS S plants are very effective for reduction and deodorization of swine wastewater contaminants, and the efflux from CRS S can either be discharged in the river or used as nutrient solution of formulation for plant growth factories. The developed CRSS plant proved to be flexible and it can simply be adapted to any type of biological waste treatment problem.roblem.
Leaching experiments of gold and silver from roasted concentrate were carried out using a chlorine-hypochlorite solution. The leaching rate of gold was 75% at 1.5:1 ratio of chlorine and hypochlorite and increased to 81% with adding 1 M NaCl. However, at 1% pulp density and at $65^{\circ}C$, the leaching rates of Au were close to 100%. XRD analysis identified quartz in the solid residues after digestion of roasted concentrate with aqua regia or chlorine-hypochloride leaching solution. This suggests that the gold may not be leached out of the quartz in aqua regia or chlorine-hypochlorite solution. In order to leach the gold from the quartz, the concentrate will have to be pre-treated through ultra-fine grinding or treated with stronger oxidative agents.
Objective: This study was conducted to determine reduction of various odorous materials from a swine farm equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system (CPRS) with aerobically treated liquid manure. Methods: The CPRS is used in swine farms in South Korea, primarily to improve air quality in pig houses. In this study, CPRS consists of a manure aerobic treatment system and a fit recirculation system; the solid fraction is separated and composted, whereas the aerobically treated liquid fraction (290.0%±21.0% per day of total stored swine slurry) is continuously returned to the pit. Four confinement pig barns in three piggery farms were used; two were equipped with CPRS and the other two operated a slurry pit under the slatted floor. Results: All chemical contents of slurry pit manure in the control were greater than those of slurry pit manure in the CRPS treatment (p<0.05). Electrical conductivity and pH contents did not differ among treatments. The biological oxygen demand of the slurry pit treatment was greater than that of the other treatments (p<0.05). Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen contents of the slurry pit treatment were greater than those of other treatments (p<0.05). Odor intensity of the CPRS treatment was lower than that of the control at indoor, exhaust, and outside sampling points (p<0.05). The temperature and carbon dioxide of the CPRS treatment in the pig barn was significantly lower than those of control (p<0.05). All measured odorous material contents of the CPRS group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The CPRS application in pig farms is considered a good option as it continuously reduces the organic load of animal manure and lowers the average odorant concentration below the threshold of detecting odorous materials.

Waste activated sludge from sewage treatment plants mainly consisted of flocs of bacterial cell, and thus hard to be stabilized anaerobically due to rigid cell walls. One of the pretreatment methods to overcome this barrier is the venturi cavitation system (VCS) adopting hydrodynamic cavitation. This research was conducted to investigate the effects of the pretreatment of waste activated sludge by VCS on the anaerobic digestibility. Depending on the pretreatment period with the VCS, methane production, COD removal and VS removal efficiency increased 41%~45%, 36.5%~43.1% and 18.4~24.1%, respectively, compared to the control case. The increase in methane production from digester was 3.3~4.2 times higher than the theoretical methane potential of the increased SCOD after the VCS pre-treatment. This suggests that the VCS pre-treatment not only increases SCOD but also improves the digestibility of solid fractions. The energy mass balance indicated that the energy consumed for sludge pre-treatment could be recovered by the increased methane production after pre-treatment, suggesting the high potential for field application.

Anaerobic digestion was investigated for the stabilization of sludge, decrease of volatile solids, production of biogas for wastewater sludge. In this study, total solids and volatile solids, elemental analysis were conducted to determine characteristics of various types of sludges and investigate the feasibility of biogas production of Municipal Wastewater Sludge (MWS), Industrial Wastewater Sludge (IWS), mixed sludge (Mix), and Municipal Wastewater Sludg Cake (MWSC). Total solids, volatile solids, and C/N ratio were determined in the range of 11.2~20.6 %, 62.1~83.1 % of TS and 4.96~8.33 %. Using the biochemical methane potential (BMP test), mixed sludge and wastewater sludge finished the methane production within approximately 20 day and 16~17 day. Sludge cake finished within 10 day. Mixed sludge produced 395.5 mL $CH_4$ per g of Volatile Solid (VS) and resulted in the highest methane production. For carbon dioxide production, five sludges had similar value of accumulated carbon dioxide production except for sludge cake.
This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of reusing newspaper or paperbox waste by methane fermentation. When 15 g of newspaper and box wastes were digested separately for 24 days by batch fermentation, the amount of total organic acids produced were 2461 and 4978 mg/L, respectively. The tCOD removal rates were found to be 60.9 and 62.4%, respectively. In addition, the removal efficiencies of total solid were 34.8 and 33.4%, and those of volatile solid were 40.0 and 39.2%, respectively. During this period, the amounts of biogas produced were 6.95 and 6.43 L. In a semicontinuous reaction, tCOD removal efficiencies for newspaper and box wastes were 64.7 and 65.0%, respectively, after 14 days of digestion. After 25 days, which were needed to stabilize the methane fermentation, the amounts of biogas produced daily were 0.31 and 0.30 L/g.dry wt, respectively. Methane contents were 57.3 and 56.2%, respectively, and the pHs in the anaerobic acidogenic and methanogenic fermenters were 5.0 and 7.5, respectively.

The study investigated the biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay of pig slurry supplemented with mixed methanogens and cellulolytic bacteria to improve anaerobic digestion for methane production. For the BMP assay, 7 different microbial supplementation groups consisted of the cultures of mixed methanogens (M), Fibrobacter succinogenes (FS), Ruminococcus flavefaciensn (RF), R. albus (RA), RA+FS, M+RA+FS, and control. The cultures were added in the batch reactors with the increasing dose levels of 1% (0.5 mL), 3% (1.5 mL) and 5% (2.5 mL). Incubation for the BMP assay was carried out for 60 days at $38^{\circ}C$ using anaerobic digestate obtained from an anaerobic digester with pig slurry as inoculum. In results, 5% RF and RA+FS increased total biogas up to 8.1 and 8.4%, respectively, compared with that of control (p<0.05). All 5% microbial culture supplements significantly increased methane production up to 12.1~17.9% compared with that of control (p<0.05). Total solid (TS) and volatile solid (VS) digestion efficiencies showed no relationship to the increased supplementation levels of microbial cultures. After incubation, pH values in all treatment groups ranged between 7.527 and 7.657 indicating that methanogensis was not inhibited during the incubation. In conclusion, the results indicated that both hydrolysis and methanogenesis stages for methane production in anaerobic batch reactors were influenced by the supplemented microorganisms due to the chemical characteristics of pig slurry, but only the 5% supplementation level of all microbial culture supplements used in the experiment affected methane production.
Properties of enzymatic hydrolysates from ascidian tunic were assessed on supernatant ratio, solid yields and solid concentration. The concentartion of solid and yields in the extracts were increased as the enzyme concentration raised from $100\;{\mu}l\;to\;1000{\mu}l$ during the extraction period. The optima concentration and reaction time of each enzyme on digestion were $400\;{\mu}l$ 60 minutes, through treated with Duncan's multiple test. The percent of yields of solid, protein and carotenoids for 60 minutes extraction at $400\;{\mu}l$ were $32.32\%,\;1.34\%\;and\;74.60\;mg\%$, respectively, in Viscozyme systems. The extracts were composed with many kinds of carbohydrates such as arabinose, ribose, xylose, galactose, glucose, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Aspartic and glutamic arid were noted as predominant amino acids in all parts. Amino acid profiles of various ascidian tunic part were similiar to each other, but most of essential amino acids content of inter coat was higher than that of root and tunic (body). About sixty six fatty acids components were observed, and their distribution among neutral and polar lipids was compared. The main fatty acids were found to be 14:0, 16:0, 16:1n7, 18:0, 18:1n9, 18:1n7, 18:2n6, 20:5n3, and 22:6n3.

The objective of this study was to verify whether SCB(Slurry Composting & Bio-filtration) system can be applied for the treatment of anaerobic digestion(AD) wastewater and also, to identify the most effective set among three filtration compost beds tested. Results can be summarized as these; (a) When AD wastewater was sprayed on the top of beds which were mainly composed of sawdust and/or other media and, subsequently, filtrates collected and analyzed, there were large drop in the values of Electric Conductivity(EC), Total Suspended Solid(TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD). In contrast, Total Nitrgen(T-N) and Total Phosphorus(T-P) were progressively elevated. We consider these changes as positive if the filtrate are to be utilized as liquid fertilizer. (b) When three sets of filtration beds (T1, T2, T3) were compared for their effectiveness, no significant difference was found among them. These indicate that expensive sawdust can be replaced in part with cheaper media such as woodchip, rice husks, or others. (c) At early stage of operation (within 20 days), BOD in filtrates were maintained at high level probably due to the lack of microbial activity. During the same stage, T-N, T-P was at low level but, were elevated to higher levels thereafter. These data, when combined, indicate that the filtration system needs at least a couple of weeks for the optimized microbial functioning. (d) The temperatures of the experimental beds were progressively dropped as the experiment continued through the fall season, although filtration effectiveness was not noticeably influenced.
As a result of the growing livestock industry, varieties of organic solid and waste biomass are be generated in swine breeding and slaughtering stages. Anaerobic digestion is a promising alternative for the treatment of livestock waste biomass, as well as for the material recovery and energy production. Objectives of this study were to analyze the biochemical methane potential of swine waste biomasses that were generated from swine pen and slaughterhouse and to investigate the material recovery and methane yield per head. As pig waste biomass, swine slurry, blood, intestine residue, and digestive tract content were collected for investigation from pig farmhouse and slaughterhouse. The $B_{th}$ (Theoretical methane potential) and $B_0$ (Biochemical methane potential) of swine slurry generating in swine breeding stage were 0.525 and $0.360Nm^3\;kg^{-1}-VS_{added}$, the ratio of degradation ($B_0/B_{th}$) was 68.6%. $B_{th}$ of blood, intestine residue, and digestive tract content were 0.539, 0.664, and $0.517Nm^3\;kg^{-1}-VS_{added}$, and $B_0$ were 0.405, 0.213, and $0.240Nm^3\;kg^{-1}-VS_{added}$, respectively. And the ratio of degradation showed 75.1, 32.1, and 46.4% in blood, intestine residue, and digestive tract content. Material yield of swine waste biomass was calculated as TS 73.79, VS 46.75, TN 5.58, $P_2O_5$ 1.94, and $K_2O$$2.91kg\;head^{-1}$. And methane yield was $16.58Nm^3\;head^{-1}$. In the aspect that slaughterhouse is a large point source of waste biomass, while swine farmhouse is non-point source, the feasibility of an anaerobic digestion using the slaughtering waste biomass need to be assessed in the economical aspect between the waste treatment cost and the profitable effect by methane production.
