  • Electricity generation through fossil fuels has caused environmental pollution. To solve this problem, research on new renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal heat, etc.) to replace fossil fuels is in progress. These devices are able to consistently generate power. However, they have many drawbacks, such as high installation costs and limitations in possible set-up environments. Thus, piezoelectric harvesting technology, which is able to overcome the limitations of existing energy technologies, is actively being studied. Piezoelectric harvesting technology uses the piezoelectric effect which occurs in crystals that generate voltage when stress is applied. Therefore, it has advantages such as a wider installation base and lower technological cost. In this study, a piezoelectric energy harvesting device based on constant wave motion was investigated. This device can regenerate electricity in a constant turbulent flow in the middle of the sea. The components of the device are circuitry, a steel bar, an bimorph piezoelectric element and buoyancy elements. In addition, a multiphysical analysis coupled with the structure and piezoelectric elements was conducted to estimate the performance of the device. With this piezoelectric energy harvesting device, the displacement and electric power were analyzed.

  • In this paper, we investigate cooperative spectrum sensing scheme for sensor network-aided cognitive radio systems with energy harvesting capability. In the proposed model, each sensor node harvests ambient energy from environment such as solar, wind, mechanical vibration, or thermoelectric effect. We propose adaptive cooperative spectrum sensing scheme in which each sensor node adaptively carries out energy detection depending on the residual energy in its energy storage and then conveys the sensing result to the fusion center. From simulation results, we show that the proposed scheme minimizes the false alarm probability for given target detection probability by adjusting the number of samples for energy detector.

  • Quadrotor with limited flight time due to battery level can have the extended mission life by applying energy harvesting technology. Bio-inspiration from the birds' locomotion of flight and perch-and-stare can make energy consumption efficient, and energy harvesting technology can generate energy. In order to charge the battery with solar power, the drones are required to be in a position without shade. In the mountainous terrain, a novel mechanism is required in order to be located stably at the top of the tree or the inclined rock. In this study, we propose an analysis of the origami structure and the concept design of the perching mechanism with two stable equilibrium states. The origami structure composed of compliant material can be applied to the perching mechanism that can be locked passively. Moreover, the experimental results of the trajectory and perching test are discussed.

  • The current energy crisis in many countries has led to the search of an efficient renewable energy source. Among those the solar energy is the most abundant and easily available. However harvesting the solar energy requires a much efficient device. Lot of research has been done in this regard and so far the efficiency of traditional solar cell stands around ~50% and for PET films it is much lesser. The potential application of PET films in the solar cells can be very promising provided the fact that the PET film is lighter and logistically more viable. There is a lot of work that is being done to increase the efficiency of PET based solar cells. The base electrode plays a vital role in increasing the efficiency of the cell.

  • Distributed sensor nodes for environmental monitoring, have a problem of difficult and expensive battery change. In this case, renewable energy such as solar energy is helpful. We can use high-quality solar energy everyday. In this paper, we model photovoltaic energy prediction model for sensor nodes, which includes charge and discharge characteristics as well as seasonal and monthly characteristics of the solar energy. Our model is useful to predict energy consumption of solar-powered sensor nodes realistically using real world use data of the nodes.

  • We show the novel hot electron based-solar energy conversion using tandem structured Schottky diode with double Schottky barriers. In this report, we show the effect of the double Schottky barriers on solar cell performance by enhancing both of internal photoemission and band-to-band excitation. The tandem structured Au/Si diode capped with TiO2 layer as second semiconductor exhibited improved ability for light harvesting. The proposed mechanisms consist of multiple reflections of hot electrons and additional pathway of solar energy conversion due to presence of multiple interfaces between thin gold film and semiconductors. Short-circuit photocurrent measured on the tandem structured Au/Si diodes under illumination of AM1.5 increased by approximately 70% from 3.1% to 5.3% and overall incident photon to electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) was enhanced in visible light, revealing that the concept of the double Schottky barriers have significant potential as novel strategy for light harvesting.

  • Energy harvesting through a thermoelectric module normally makes use of the temperature gradient in the system's operational environment. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain the desired output power when the system is subjected to an environment in which a low temperature gradient is generated across the module, because the power generation efficiency of the thermoelectric device is not optimized. The utilization of solar energy, which is a form of renewable energy abundant in nature, has mostly been limited to photovoltaic solar cells and solar thermal energy generation. However, photovoltaic power generation is capable of utilizing only a narrow wavelength band from the sunlight and, thus, the power generation efficiency might be lowered by light scattering. In the case of solar thermal energy generation, the system usually requires large-scale facilities. In this study, a simple and small size thermoelectric power generation system with a solar concentrator was designed to create a large temperature gradient for enhanced performance. A solar tracking system was used to concentrate the solar thermal energy during the experiments and a liquid circulating chiller was installed to maintain a large temperature gradient in order to avoid heat transfer to the bottom of the thermoelectric module. Then, the setup was tested through a series of experiments and the performance of the system was analyzed for the purpose of evaluating its feasibility and validity.

  • The lead-based perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) material has a high molar coefficient, high crystallinity at low temperature, and long range of balanced electron-hole transport length. In addition, PCE of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been dramatically improved by over 22% by amending the electronic quality of perovskite and by using state-of-the-art hole transporting materials (HTMs) such as tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) due to enhanced charge transport toward the electrode via properly aligned energy levels with respect to the perovskite. Replacing the spiro-OMeTAD with new HTMs with the desired properties of appropriate energy levels, high hole mobility in its pristine form, low cost, and easy processable materials is necessary for attaining highly efficient and stable PSCs, which are anticipated to be truly compatible for practical application. Furthermore, Recently Pb-free perovskite materials much attention as an alternative light-harvesting active layer material instead of lead based perovskite in photovoltaic cells. In this work, we demonstrate a Pb-free perovskite material for the light harvesting and emitter as optoelectronic devices.

  • In this paper, we design a self-powered Arduino system for solar energy harvesting and explain its operation. To perform the operation, the Arduino system senses the amount of solar energy that changes every moment and adjusts the ratio of the active mode and sleep mode operation time according to a given solar light intensity. If the intensity of sunlight is strong enough, the Arduino system can be continuously driven in active mode and receive sufficient power from sunlight. If not, the system can run in sleep mode to minimize power consumption. As a result, it can be seen that energy consumption can be minimized by reducing power consumption by up to 81.7% when using sleep mode compared to continuously driving active mode. Also, when the light intensity is at an intermediate level, the ratio between the active mode and the sleep mode is appropriately adjusted according to the light intensity to operate. The method of self-control of the operating time ratio of active mode and sleep mode, proposed in this paper, is thought to be helpful in energy-efficient operation of the self-powered systems for wearables and bio-health applications.
