Detailed Analysis of Solar Radiation Components in Korea (국내 일사량 성분의 상세분석)

  • Knowledge of the detailed solar radiation components are essential for modeling many solar systems. This is particularly the case for applications that concentrate the incident energy to attain high photo-dynamic efficiency achievable only at the higher intensities. In order to estimate the performance of concentrating solar systems, it is necessary to know the intensity of the beam radiation, as only this component can be concentrated. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting detailed solar radiation component data since August, 1988. KIER's component data will be extensively used by solar system users or designers as well as by research institutes.

  • There have been many developed systems for harnessing the solar energy such as solar water heaters, solar thermal power systems, PV systems, daylighting and solar hydrogen systems. all of them are capable of reducing $CO_2$ emission. However, the efficiency of those systems which work without a solar tracker is lower. This paper is a step by step procedure for fabrication and a performance test of a solar tracking system. The system developed in this study consists of motion controllers, motor drives, step-motors, feedback devices and application. CdS sensors are introduced into the solar tracking system for playing a primary role in poor conditions for tracking due to a gear backlash and a strong wind. Mini-dish was used as a concentrator for collecting sun light. The solar position data, in terms of azimuth and elevation, sunrise and sunset times was compared with those of KASI(Korea Astronomy & Space Science Institute). The results presented in this article provide the high accuracy of the present system in solar tracking and indicate a potential for energy savings.

In order to estimate the performance of concentrating PV systems, it is necessary to know the intensity of the beam radiation, as only this components can be concentrated, and The new PV cell can generate electricity from ultraviolet and infrared light as well as visible light. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting solar radiation components data since January, 1988, and solar radiation classified wavelength data since November, 2008. KIER's solar radiation components and classified wavelength data will be extensively used by concentrating PV system users or designers as well as by research institutes. It is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as application and development of solar energy system increase. Consider able efforts have been made constructing a standard data base system from measure data.

  • Currently, the world is paying keen attention to the production of renewable energy along with environmental issues, and the share of renewable energy in the world is rising above that of nuclear power. Especially when Korea, which is heavily dependent on foreign countries, needs to reconsider its national competitiveness due to the recent high oil prices, the government's energy policy is to develop and use renewable energy that replaces fossil fuels. In particular, solar energy, the most actively studied and commercialized field of renewable energy, is the main research for solar energy and is commercialized and used. However, the efficiency of solar energy has already reached saturation. Studies are also focusing on increasing the reflectivity of solar energy to increase efficiency. Therefore, this paper proposes a solar collection system that can utilize solar energy rather than solar energy. The proposed solar heat collection system uses solar tracking systems to effectively collect solar energy, particularly those that can be easily produced using single-modular reflectors and have price competitiveness. In addition, temperature measurement experiments with temperature measuring sensors were conducted to ensure reliability in order to verify the results interpreted.

  • Since the solar radiation is main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system and solar thermal power system, it will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 and direct normal insolation data since December 1992 at 16 different locations. Because of a poor reliability of existing data, KIER's new data will be extensively used by solar energy system users as well as by research institutes. Among some significant results, the yearly averaged horizontal global insolation was turned out 3.61 kWh/$m^2$/day and the yearly mean 5.38 kWh/$m^2$/day of the direct normal insolation was evaluated for clear days.

Forced Convection Heat Transfer from an Inner Surface of a Two-Dimensional Rectangular Cavity (이차원 사각형 공동 내부에서의 강제 대류 열전달)

  • In order to investigate forced convection heat transfer due to the wind from the inner surface of a cavity receiver for a parabolic dish type solar energy collecting system, a two-dimensional rectangular cavity receiver is prepared and installed in a wind tunnel. The convection heat transfer coefficient of the inner surface of the receiver is dependent on the direction and the velocity of the wind. The attack angle of the cavity and the air velocity in the tunnel are controlled in a wide range so that the effects of the attack angle and the wind velocity on the heat transfer coefficient can be studied. The skirt is installed at the aperture of the cavity in order to reduce convective heat loss. The effects of the length and the installation angle of the skirt on convection heat transfer of the cavity are tested. It is found that convection heat loss can be significantly reduced by installing the skirt. Also, it is known that heat transfer from the cavity can be minimized if the angle of the skirt is $90^{\circ}$ to the outer surface of the cavity.

  • Study on the performance characteristics of the solar hybrid system with heat pump operating temperature during winter season has performed by using an experimental test. The system performance and operating characteristics with the heat pump operating temperature, hour and load condition were investigated and analyzed. As a result, the hot water temperature was significantly affected by the heat pump operating temperature at the morning(time 1) and noon(time 2). However, hot water temperature was set by the radiation quality and collecting operation hour at the afternoon(time 3). In addition to the solar fraction was decreased for the high heat pump operating temperature because the heat pump operated with a long operating time and short operating period.

  • Since the solar radiation is the main input for sizing any solar system, it will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy and Resources (KIER) has began collecting horizontal insolation data since May, 1982 at 15 different locations. Because of a poor reliability of existing data, KIER's new data will be extensively used by the solar system users as well as by research institutes. Among some significant results, we obtained the good results more than we had expected, it is very encouraging that the mean value of Korea's solar radiation is increased by more than 30%.

  • In this study, the solar thermal and geo-source heat pump(GSHP) hybrid system for heating and cooling of Zero Energy Solar House(ZESH) was analyzed by experiment. The GSHP in this hybrid system works like as aback-up device for solar thermal system. This hybrid system was designed and installed for Zero Energy Solar House (KIER ZeSH) in Korea Institute of Energy Research. The purpose of this study is to find out that this system is optimized and operated normally for the heating load of ZeSH. The analysis was conducted as followings ; - the thermal performance of facade integrated solar collector - the on/off characteristics of solar system and GSHP - the contribution of solar thermal system. - the performance of solar thermal and ground source heat pump system respectively. - the meet of thermal load (space and water heating load). This experimental study could be useful for the optimization of this system as well as its application in house. This hybrid system could be commercialized for the green home if it is developed to a package type.

  • In this study, heat collecting performance was study of flat plate solar collector by the angle. A method of study on were made turn out artificial sun by the angle of 0, 15, 30 degrees. The heat performances were measured the tube array surface temperature by thermo-couple. The winter season natural condition for 4 times on the angles of various general and emboss glass at optimum distance(0.68m) calculated of between sun and solar collector. To sum up temperature rise is appear more or less that emboss glass is all the better for general glass. The temperature variable at below of 30 degree was appear very less. The maximum performance of this system at that it is tilt angle of 30 with general glass is appear Q:11.54(kcal/min) and ${\Delta}T=18.9^{\circ}C$.
