  • Recently environmental regulations like the Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, required the 5.2% reduction of the greenhouse gas emission in 1990. And 13th General Assembly in 2007, held in Bali of India, have agreed to duty reduction even in developing countries in 2013. Korean government needs the researches on climate change and the strategic programs for greenhouse gas reduction. In this paper Colorado State University Mesoscale Model(CSU-MM) was applied to simulate the relationship between surface albedo and air temperature. Meteorological model simulation in region of Ansan-City, Shiheung-City showed that mean air temperature became lower with the increase of albedo value. Simulated air temperature became lower $-0.16^{\circ}C$ and $-0.66^{\circ}C$ by 5% and 20% increase of albedo values respectively. And cooling energy saving amount in air conditioning process was calculated according to lowered air temperature. The reduction of air temperature resulted the reduction of air conditioning energy in personal house and commercial buildings. The increase of albedo from 5% to 20% resulted the reduction of air conditioning energy from 44,493 MWh/yr to 183,796 MWh/yr. Additionally the reduction of greenhouse gas emission through the energy saving was calculated after IPCC guideline. In terms of greenhouse gas emission $CO_2$ was reduced form -30,414 ton-$CO_2$/yr to -125,638 ton-$CO_2$/yr according to the reduction of electric energy.

  • According to an increasing demand of political support and development on renewable energy as a solution for the energy problem in Korea, the government has established a goal to raise renewable energy supply from 2.27% to 5% until 2011. Especially in the case of public building in which energy use is in great demand, it would bring a great advantage to develop and utilize the Photovoltaic System as an electric energy and Geothermal Heat Pump System as a thermal energy. On the occasion of Photovoltaic System, Photovoltaic module can be used as an architectural material so that it can reduce construction cost and when we use solar energy, it is possible to make building's own power supply. As for Geothermal Heat Pump System, It can be used infinitely as long as the solar energy exist and operation cost is cheap and yearly efficiency is stable. However, we need to make a plan to reduce early investment expanses for these two renewable energy systems and to expand a diffusion rate as we develop a competitive domestic technology level. So in this study, we are going to perform evaluation of economical efficiency according to the introduction of Photovoltaic System and Geothermal Heat Pump System in public buildings which will be built up inside of Daegu Sin-seo innovation city. As a first step, we will investigate present installation condition of these two renewable energy systems and based upon that, will seek efficient introduction program of renewal energy systems that can be applied in public buildings.

  • Ice Rink is energy intensive building type. Concern of energy saving from buildings is one of very important issues nowadays. New and renewable energy sources for buildings are especially important when we concern about energy supply for buildings. Among new and renewable energy sources, use of seawater for heating and cooling is an emerging issue for energy conscious building design. The options of energy use from sea water heat sources are using deep sea water for direct cooling with heat exchange facilities, and using surface layer water with heat pump systems. In this study, energy consumptions for an Ice Rink building are analyzed according to the heat sources of air-conditioning systems; existing system and sea water heat source system, in a coastal city, Kangnung. The location of the city Kangnung is good for using both deep sea water which is constant temperature throughout the year less than $2^{\circ}C$, and surface layer water which should be accompanied with heat pump systems. The result shows that using sea water from 200m and 30m under sea lever can save annual energy consumption about 33% of original system and about 10% of that using seawater from 0m depth. Annual energy consumption is similar between the systems with seawater from 200m and 30m. Although the amount of energy saving in summer of the system with 200m depth is higher than that with 30m depth, the requirement of energy in winter of the system with 200m depth is bigger than that with 30m depth.

  • A 5 ton/day pilot scale two-phase anaerobic digester was constructed and tasted to treat Korean food wastes in Anyang city. The process was developed based on 3 years of lab-scale experimental results on am optimim treatment method for the recovery of biogas and humus. Problems related to food waste are ever Increasing quantity among municipal solid wastes(MSW) and high moisture and salt contents. Thus our food waste produces large amounts of leachate and bed odor in landfill sites which are being exhausted. The easily degradable presorted food waste was efficiently treated in the two-phase anaerobic digestion process. The waste contained in plastic bags was shredded and then screened for the removal of inert material such as fabrics and plastics, and subsequently put into the two-stage reactors. Heavy and light inerts such as bones, shells, spoons and plastic pieces were again removed by gravity differences. The residual organic component was effectively hydrolyzed and acidified in the first reactor with 5 days space time at pH of about 6.5. The second, methanization reactor part of which is filled with anaerobic fillters, converted the acids into methane with pH between 7.4 to 7.8. The space time for the second reactor was 15 days. The effluent from the second reactor was recycled to the first reactor to provide alkalinities. The process showed stable steady state operation with the maximum organic rate of 7.9 $kgVS/m^3day$ and the volatile solid reduction efficiency of about 70%. The total of 3.6 tons presorted MSW containing 2.9 tons of food organic was treated to produce about $230m^3$ of biogas with 70% of methane and 80kg humus. This process is extended to full scale treating 15 tons of food waste a day in Euiwang city and the produced biogas is utilized for the heating/cooling of adjacent buildings.

  • Generally, trees lining the streets are the most easily accessible green areas in the city and constitute the smallest basic unit in the formation of the urban linear green axis. This study attempts to interpret issues related to city trees from a comprehensive and relational viewpoint. The site of this study is Central Park Street in front of Incheon Metropolitan City Hall. This street is representative of those in Incheon City. This study is an inter-relational interpretation of issues by measuring the vitality of these trees. The following are results of this study: First, the vitality of city trees is higher in those trees growing in natural ground than those growing in plant gratings. This observation can lead to budget savings and increased natural areas in the city. Also, if planter and multi-layering planting methods are introduced where damage to trees is predicted, variation to urban landscape can be achieved while linking to reinforced rearing foundation of street-side trees. Second, there is need for a holistic approach to caring for street-side trees regarding the damage caused by drastic pruning and strong street lights. The typical functions of these trees, like supplying freshness in summer, absorbing solar radiation, and controlling the urban micro-climate are closely related to the vitality of the trees. Accordingly, the function and ecology should be understood holistically, not separately. In this aspect, the functional and ecological use of the multi-layering planting method is effective in protecting pedestrians from vehicles as well. Third, the fallen leaves of monotonous rows of trees have different ecological and functional effects. Not only is the index of greenness in the urban setting increased, but there are also aesthetic and symbolic effects. Fourth, in spite of being the street along which Incheon Metropolitan City Hall, major administrative buildings and Central Park are located, this street does not have its own special identity to discriminate it from other streets. It fulfills only functional criteria based on uniformity. If there is no paradigm shift from today's street system based on vehicles, the role of landscape architecture will be very passive in regards to street-side trees, the minimum unit of urban green. Fifth, on this particular street, many trees were planted in December, which reflects a deficiency of short and long-term strategy, like a street-tree master plan. In this aspect, we still lack a mature culture concerning these trees as a basic unit in urban greenery. Furthermore, there needs to be cultural introspection concerning present administrative practices.

  • In the face of the world's growing energy storage needs, liquid hydrogen offers a high energy density solution for the storage and transport of energy throughout society. A 5 L liquid hydrogen storage tank has been designed, fabricated and tested to investigate boil-off rate of liquid hydrogen. As the insulation plays a key role on the cryogenic vessels, various insulation methods have been employed. To reduce heat conduction loss, the epoxy resin-based insulation supports G-10 were used. To minimize radiation heat loss, vapor cooled radiation shield, multi-layer insulation, and high vacuum were adopted. Mass flow meter was used to measure boil-off rate of the 5 L cryogenic vessel. A series of performance tests were done for liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen to compare with design parameters, resulting in the boil-off rate of 1.7%/day for liquid nitrogen and 16.8%/day for liquid hydrogen at maximum.

  • The main focus of this study was the evaluation of arsenic concentration in the ground water of Lahore at different depth and application of different mitigation techniques for arsenic removal. Twenty four hours of solar oxidation gives 90% of arsenic removal as compared to 8 hr. or 16 hr. Among oxides, calcium oxide gives 96% of As removal as compared to 93% by lanthanum oxide. Arsenic removal efficiency was up to 97% by ferric chloride, whereas 95% by alum. Activated alumina showed 99% removal as compared to 97% and 95% removal with bauxite and charcoal, respectively. Elemental analysis of adsorbents showed that the presence of phosphate and silica can cause a reduction of arsenic removal efficiency by activated alumina, bauxite and charcoal. This study has laid a foundation for further research on arsenic in the city of Lahore and has also provided suitable techniques for arsenic removal.

  • This study carried out to understand the thermal characteristics of various surface material which compose the city through the observation in the summer. To examine passive cooling effect of planting of building, it is arranged four different materials that is natural grass, grass block, concrete slab and artificial grass. The results of this study are as follows; (1) Natural grass and grass block show the lower surface temperature because of the structures of leaf can do more thermal dissipation effectively. (2) There is little surface temperature between artificial grass and concrete. But there is little high surface temperature difference between natural grass and concrete because of latent heat effect. (3) The concrete can play a role of the tropical nights phenomenon as high heat capacity of concrete compare with other materials. (4) It is nearly same color in artificial grass and natural grass but there is large difference between natural grass and artificial grass at albedo. There is different albedo in near infrared ray range. (5) A short wave radiation gives more effect at the globe temperature than long wave radiation. (6) The artificial turf protected the slab surface temperature increase in spite of thin and low albedo materials.

  • Fossil fuel such as oil and natural gas has been used and will be no longer supplied enough to demand in the beginning of thisg century. The use of the fuel makes a lot of environmental pollution to threaten human being's health especially in big cities and produces a lot of $CO_{2}$ to make green house effect of the earth. It is the time to use clean fuel such as hydrogen to prevent the expected energy crisis and the pollution. A new engine such as fuel cell can be used instead of the conventional internal combustion engine with 2 to 3 times higher efficiency of the conventional engine. The fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen and produces electric energy and pure water, which is a calm engine without air pollution. In big cities the city buses and the taxies powered by hydrogen fuel cells are suggested to be operated for clean environment. The energy and cost analysis performed for hydrogen and electricity production from wind power and solar cell.
