  • Long-term solar irradiance data are required for reliable performance evaluation and feasibility analysis of solar photovoltaic systems. However, measurement data of the global horizontal irradiance (GHI) are only available for major cities in Korea. Neither the direct normal irradiance (DNI) nor the diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) are available, which are also needed to calculate the irradiance on the tilted surface of PV array. It is a simple approach to take advantage of the decomposition model that extracts DNI and DHI from GHI. In this study, we investigate variations of solar PV power estimation due to the choice of decomposition model. The GHI data from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) were used and different sets of typical meteorological year (TMY) data using some well-known decomposition models were generated. Then, power outputs with the different TMY data were calculated, and a variation of 3.7% was estimated due to the choice of decomposition model.

  • Solar radiation data are important data that can be used as basic research data in diverse areas. In particular, solar radiation data are essential for diverse studies that have been recently conducted in South Korea including those for new and renewable energy resource map making and crop yield forecasting. So purpose of this study is modification of Heliosat-II method to estimate solar irradiance in Korea by using COMS-MI imagery. For this purpose, in this study, errors appearing in ground albedo images were corrected through linear transformation. And method of producing background albedo map which is used in Heliosat-II method is modified to get more finely tuned one. Through the study, ground albedo correction could be successfully performed and background albedo maps could be successfully derived. Lastly, In this study, solar irradiance was estimated by using modified Heliostat-II method. And it was compared with actually measured values to verify the accuracy of the methods. Accuracy of estimated solar irradiance was 30.8% RMSE(%). And this accuracy level means that solar irradiance was estimated on 10% higher level than previous Heliosat-II method.

  • Localized solar irradiance is normally derived from atmospheric transmission influenced by atmospheric composition and conditions of the target area. Specially, for the area with complex coastal lines such as Taean gun, the accurate estimation of solar irradiance requires for in depth analysis of atmospheric transmission characteristics based on the localized vertical profiles of the key atmospheric parameters. Using MODTRAN (MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission) 6, we report a computational study on clear day atmospheric transmission and direct solar irradiance estimation of Taean gun using the data collected from 3 ground stations and radiosonde measurement over 93 clear days in 2018. The MODTRAN estimated direct solar irradiance is compared with the measurement. The results show that the normalized residual mean (NRM) is 0.28 for the temperature based MODTRAN atmospheric model and 0.32 for the pressure based MODTRAN atmospheric model. These values are larger than 0.1~0.2 of the other study and we understand that such difference represents the local atmospheric characteristics of Taean gun. The results also show that NRM tends to increase noticeably in summer as the temperature increases. Such findings from this study can be very useful for estimation and prediction of the atmospheric condition of the local area with complex coastal lines.

  • The seasonal variations in weather parameters can significantly affect the atmospheric transmission characteristics. Herein, we propose a novel augmented multiple regression algorithm for the accurate estimation of atmospheric transmittance and solar irradiance over highly localized areas. The algorithm employs 1) adaptive atmospheric model selection using measured meteorological data and 2) multiple linear regression computation augmented with the conventional application of MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN). In this study, the proposed algorithm was employed to estimate the solar irradiance over Taean coastal area using the 2018 clear days' meteorological data of the area, and the results were compared with the measurement data. The difference between the measured and computed solar irradiance significantly improved from 89.27 ± 48.08σ W/㎡ (with standard MODTRAN) to 21.35 ± 16.54σ W/㎡ (with augmented multiple regression algorithm). The novel method proposed herein can be a useful tool for the accurate estimation of solar irradiance and atmospheric transmission characteristics of highly localized areas with various weather conditions; it can also be used to correct remotely sensed atmospheric data of such areas.

  • Determining 'photosynthetically active radiation' (PAR) is a key part of calculating phytoplankton productivity in a biogeochemical model. We explore the daily and seasonal variability in the ratio of PAR irradiance to total irradiance that occurred at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) in the East China Sea under clear-sky conditions in 2004 using a simple radiative transfer model (RTM). Meteorological data observed at IORS and aerosol optical properties derived from Aerosol Robotic Network observations at Gosan are used for the RTM. Preliminary results suggest that the use of simple PAR irradiance-ratio values is appropriate in calculating phytoplankton productivity as follows: an average of $0.44\;({\pm}0.01)$ in January to an average of $0.48\;({\pm}0.01)$ in July, with average daily variabilities over these periods of about $0.016\;({\pm}0.008)$ and $0.025\;({\pm}0.008)$, respectively. The model experiments demonstrate that variations in the major controlling input parameters (i.e. solar zenith angle, precipitable water vapor and aerosol optical thickness) cause PAR irradiance ratio variation at daily and seasonal timescales. Further, increases (>0.012) in the PAR irradiance ratio just below the sea-surface are positively correlated with high solar zenith angles and strong wind stresses relative to those just above the sea-surface.

  • The effect of solar irradiance has been used to estimate daily maximum temperature, which make it possible to reduce the error inherent to lapse-rate based elevation difference correction in mountainous terrain. Still, recent observations indicated that the effect of solar radiation would need correction for estimation of daily maximum temperature. It was attempted to examine what would cause the variability of solar irradiance effect in determination of daily maximum temperature under natural field conditions and to suggest improved methods for estimation of the temperature distribution over mountainous regions. Temperature at 1500 and the wind speed for 1100 to 1500 were obtained at 10 validation sites with various topographical features including slope and aspect within a mountainous $50km^2$ catchment for 2012-2013. Lapse-rate corrected temperature estimates on clear days were compared with these observations, which would represent the differential irradiance effect among sloped surfaces. Results indicated a negative correlation between the mean wind speed and the estimation error. A simple scheme was derived from relationship between wind speed and estimation error for daily temperature to correct the effect of solar radiation. This scheme was incorporated into an existing model to estimate daily maximum temperature based on the effect of solar radiation. At 10 validation sites on clear days, estimates of 1500 LST temperature with and without the correction scheme were compared. It was found that a substantial improvement was achieved when the correction scheme was applied in terms of bias correction as well as error size reduction at all sites.

  • Since the solar energy resource is the main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system, it is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as an application and development of solar energy system increase. It will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 at 16 different locations in Korea and for the more detailed analysis, images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth"s surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. From the results, the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations and estimated using satellite at 23 different stations over the South Korea from 1982 to 2009. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is 3.56 kWh/ $m^2$/day and estimated solar radiation fluxes show reliable results for estimating the global radiation with average deviation of -7.27 to +3.65% from the measured values.

  • Recently, the authors of this paper proposed newly the correlation model to calculate the horizontal global solar radiation in Korea based the Zhang-Huang (ZH) model proposed in 2002 for China. Previous study was pronounced the correlation with a new term of the duration of sunshine proved as being closely related with the hourly solar radiation in Korea into ZH model. And then another modified correlation for the regions without measuring cloud cover was proposed and evaluated the accuracy and validity for those regions. So, this study was performed to propose modified correlation to calculate the horizontal global solar irradiance of non-measuring cloud-cover regions. Finally, this study proposed the new correlation that could well predict hourly and daily total solar radiation for all regions, various seasons, and various weather conditions including overcast and clear, with higher accuracy and lower error than other models proposed ever before in Korea for non-measuring cloud-cover regions.

  • Solar irradiation controls the exchange of heat energy between atmosphere and land or ocean, and becomes an important factors to the radiance flux at the surface and the biosphere. In order to estimate solar irradiance and earth albedo In Korea peninsula during 1996, GMS date and paramaterization model was combinationally used. In clear sky, the paramaterization model was used to estimate solar iradiance. Also in cloudy sky, the earth albedo was used to calculate the Interceptive effect of solar irradiance. The hourly solar irradiance [the hourly earth albedo] showed generally very low values with <1.00 MJ/m$^2$hr [high values with >0.65] on the middle part (36.00-36.50$^{\circ}$S) and the Southeastern part (near 34.50$^{\circ}$S) in Korea peninsula, respectively. Satellite estimates (GMS data) with pyramometer measurements (in-situ data) were compared for 21 observed stations. Totally, correlation coefficient showed high values with 0.85. In the monthly variation, correlation coefficient of the spring and summer with rms=about 0.42 MJ/m$^2$hr was better than the autumn and winter with rms >0.5 MJ/m$^2$hr. Generally monthly variations of correlation coefficient between satellite estimetes and pyranometer measurements showed r=0.936 in clear sky during 1 year except only May, June, July and August.

  • This paper presents performance estimation approach of grid-connected photovoltaic(PV) system to predict energy yield from irradiance to PV system using normalized yield model for changing meteorological conditions. The accuracy and validity of proposed performance estimation method is identified by compared measured with estimated yield using monitored data. These results will indicate that it is useful to estimate various loss factors causing the system performance obstruction and enhance the lifetime yield of PV system.
