In the design and analysis of soil nailed slope, interaction between soil and nail is one of important problems. In the present analysis approaches for the interactions have developed a elastic analysis approach or a plastic analysis approach. However these approaches are not able to estimate the general interaction between soil and nail. In this study the general interaction between soil and nail using the strain wedge model is proposed. Also results of comparison between the proposed method and full scale test results by Gassler(1976) and large scale experimental results at Oxford University are shown in good agreements.
In this paper, a simplified mathematical procedure is presented to incorporate nonlinearity in soil material to predict the deceleration time history, penetration depth and other relevant parameters for normal impact of missiles into soil targets. Numerical method is employed for these predictions. The results of the study are compared with experimental observations and predictions available in the literature. A good agreement is found with experimental observations and an improvement is observed with existing predictions. A comparison is also made with linear soil model. Some parametric studies are also carried out to obtain the results of practical interest.

In this study, a numerical method for soil-pile-structure interaction problems in multi-layered half-plane is developed. The total soil-pile-structure interaction system is divided into two parts namely, nonlinear structure part and linear soil-pile interaction parts. In the structure field, the general finite element method is introduced to solve the dynamic equation of motion for the structure. In the soil-pile structure interaction part, physical model consisting of lumped parameter, which is frequency dependent coefficient and determined by rigorous analysis method is introduced. Using proposed analysis procedure, the nonlinear behavior of structure considering soil-structure interaction can be efficiently determined in time domain and the analysis cost is dramatically reduced.
Railway construction needs vast soil investigation for its infrastructure foundation designs along the planned railway path to identify the design parameters for stability and serviceability checks. The soil investigation data are usually classified and grouped to decide design input parameters per each construction section and budget estimates. Deterministic design method which most civil engineer and practitioner are familiar with has a clear limitation in construction/maintenance budget control, and occasionally produced overdesigned or unsafe design problems. Instead of using a batch type analysis with predetermined input parameters, data population collected from site soil investigation and design load condition can be statistically estimated for the mean and variance to present the feature of data distribution and optimized with a best fitting probability function. Probabilistic approach using entire feature of design input data enables to predict the worst, best and most probable cases based on identified ranges of soil and load data, which will help railway designer select construction method to save the time and cost. This paper introduces two Monte Carlo simulations actually applied on estimation of retaining wall external stability and long term settlement of organic soil in soil investigation area for a recent high speed railway project.
Our understanding on the plant's capability to acquire the nutrients from the soil under harsh circumstance, like unfavorably high pH, and the plant's capability to protect itself under very low soil pH, has been remarkably increased in the recent years. Having those knowledges, it seems not to be wise to abide to the traditional approach to deal the problems of acidic or alkaline soils via chemical methods like liming or using acidic materials. Instead, we may try to select the crops and varieties that can better withstand soil acidity or alkalinity. This stance will be more welcomed when the conservation of environments is high priority issue.

Recently a pressurized grouting soil nail is demanded due to problems beyond of economical and engineering purpose. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PGSN (Pressurized Grouting Soil Nailing) system is respected to reduced displacements of nails and increase of global slope stability. And effects of various factors related to the design of the PGSN system, such as the length of the soil nail, injected pressure and W/C ratio of cement grout in the pressurized grouting soil nail are examined throughout a series of the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests. Displacement-controlled field pull-out tests are performed in the present study and the volume of grouting are also evaluated based on the measurements. In addition, both short-term and long-term characteristics of pull-out deformations of the newly proposed PGSN system are analyzed and compared with those of the general soil nailing system by carrying out the stress-controlled field pull-out tests. From the pull-out characteristics of pressurized grouting soil nails, it is found that the effect of the length of the soil nail, injected pressure and W/C ratio of cement grout are important parameters.

Precise analysis of soil-structure interaction requires a proper description of soil profile. However, such approach becomes generally nearly unpractical for soil exhibiting material discontinuity and complex geometry since meshes should match that material discontinuity line. To overcome these difficulties, a different numerical integration method is adopted in this paper, which enables to integrate easily over an element with material discontinuity without regenerating mesh fellowing the discontinuity line. As a result the mesh is highly structured, loading to very regular silliness matrix. The influence of the shape of soil profile on the response is examined and it is seen that the proposed soil-structure analysis method can be easily used on soil-structure interaction problems with complicated soil profile and produce reliable results regardless of material discontinuities.

Soil stress distribution under loading is one of the important problems in civil engineering. Many models have been proposed to interpret the stress distribution in soil and most models assume that the soil is homogeneous and isotropic. Therefore, the actual stress distribution may be different. In addition, With the increase of the top load, soil stress does not increase linearly. In this study, vertical stress changes in sandy soil according to top load increase were measured through experiments. Experimental results, vertical soil stress due to top load increase showed an initial nonlinear behavior and when the load increases to some extent, vertical soil stress showed a linear behavior. ${\alpha}$ value obtained by existing theories always 1.00. But, ${\alpha}$ value by experiment was observed from 0.91 to 1.22 and ${\alpha}$ value was increased with increasing distance from the loading plate.

Fertilizers have long been used to increase crop yields; however, farmers are still having difficulties in managing fertilizers for growing crops as well as economic problems. The conventional method of soil sampling and laboratory analysis to determine soil pH is time consuming and costly; therefore, a portable pH sensor is developed to characterize spatial or temporal variability within fields via rapid and dense data acquisition. The portable pH sensor comprises an electrode unit, a portable console, and a USB connector. The soil water content (SWC) and electrical conductivity (EC) affect the electrical resistance of soil. An artificial test soil is performed to evaluate the effect of SWC and EC on soil pH. The test results show that stable pH measurements are achieved at SWCs greater than 20 mL (16.3%). Regardless of the SWC, the electric potential difference (EPD) remains at 2.5 g of NaCl. As the EC increases in the soil samples, the EPD increases.
