This study was carried out to examine the forest fire effect on water storage characteristics in the forests. Water storage capacity of the burned area was analyzed by several major factors, such as soil pore, maximum water content, effective water storage, and percolation rate. The results obtained from the analysis of major factors are as follows; The deeper soil depth, the less total pore, coarse pore, effective water storage, and percolation rate. However, fine pore increased slightly in both burned area and control plot. As compared with control plot, burned area showed lower percolation rate, coarse pore, and effective water storage, but higher values of fine pore. Directly after forest fire, the soil pore is little affected. But as the time passes, top soil structure changes and soil pore also is affected even in a deep soil. Estimated effective water storage was lower at top soil of Namcheon and at deep soil of Namha in all the burned areas, but slowly decreased in deep soil compared to control plots. Therefore it was concluded that forest water storage capacity was greatly affected by the forest fire.
Incessant rainfalls in unsaturated soil raises pore water pressure and drops shear stress. Controlling pore water pressure in unsaturated soil prevents pressure increase and leads to slope stability. Laboratory experiment of pore water absorption in soil tank has been conducted for pore pressure decrease in soil slope under artifical rainfall supplied in varying rainfall indensities. Soil slope failure triggers the deepening of the wetting front to critical depth accompanied by decrease in matric suction induced by water infilteration. This paper addresses an experimental design for absorption pipe to prevent pore pressure increase in unsaturated soil slope from heavy rain. It is expected that absorption pipe will be widely used in unsaturated soil slope to strengthen slope stability.

Unsaturated soil has a possibility to induce a negative pore water pressure. Until now, saturated soil is mainly focused on the research of soil mechanics. Recently, soil mechanics is researched on two major parts such as saturated and unsaturated soil mechanics. Negative pore water pressure has a non-linear relationship with the water content changes. Soil-water characteristic curves of soil in Korea are not determined. There is no proper characteristic value such as air-entry value and residual water content. In this study, the characteristic curves of reclaimed soil, sand, and weathered granite soil were determined by laboratory tests. Air-entry value and residual water content were determined by fitting methods. Soil-water characteristic curves were estimated based on the particle-size distribution and compared with the laboratory test results. The results of soil-water characteristic curves estimation indicated that Fredlund and Wilson's model is excellent for sand and weathered granite soil. Arya and Paris's model is excellent for reclaimed soil.

Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of pore water contamination on the treatment effect of sandy soil which was solidified by Portland cement. In the experiments, setting time of hydraulic cement that was mixed with contaminated mixing water was measured using Vicat equipment and observed the tendency of setting process with the kind of contaminants, organic or inorganic components. It was shown that organic contaminants of the mixing water affect largely on the initial setting process of hydraulic cement and inorganics, expecially heavy metals, did not affect on the initial setting process, otherwise it was appeared that setting time of the sandy soil that was contaminated with inorganic components was apparently faster than the sandy soil that did not include inorganic components even though organic concentrations was relatively low level (COD=200∼300) in the mixing water. The results of unconfined compression strength test (UCST) were well consistent with the results of Vicat equipment test.
This study was carried out to get the basic data for obtaining water resources continuously. Water storage of forest land was estimated by effective water storage based on classifying soil pore. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Percentage of coarse pores were in the order : Forest>Bare land>Grasses. As soil depth increased, total pores, coarse pores, and maximum water content were decreased, while fine pores increased. 2. Soil pore percentage and physical properties of surface layer(0~20cm) were significantly different among forest floor conditions. However, there were no difference in soil pore percentage and physical properties in 20~40cm and 40~60cm according to forest floor conditions. In the same plot, on the other hand, soil pore percentage and physical properties were significantly different between surface layer(0~20cm) and 20~40cm, but there were no differences between 20~40cm and 40~60cm. 3. Effective water storage was highly correlated with coarse pore in all plots. 4. The model for water storage capacity of each forest floor condition expressed by effective water storage was produced using coarse pores and soil depth.
Since water flow in the ground depends on the pore structure composed of soil grains, equations to predict the hydraulic properties based on the grain size have low accuracy. This paper presents a methodology to compute constriction-pore size distribution by Silveria's method and estimate saturated and unsaturated hydraulic properties of soils. Well-graded soil shows a uni-modal pore size distribution, and poor-graded soil does a bimodal distribution. Among theoretical models for saturated hydraulic conductivity using pore size distribution, Marshall model is well-matched with experimental results. Model formulas for soil-water characteristic curves and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity using the pore size distribution are proposed for hydraulic analysis of unsaturated soil. Continuous research is needed to select a model suitable to estimate hydraulic properties by applying the developed model formulas to various soils.
Since matric suction of unsaturated soil was related to soil and ground water contaminations, it is very important to analyze its mechanism that was represented by shear characteristics. In three phases of soil, a little air makes the condition of unsaturated soil on contract or shrinkage surface between water and air. Capillarity and suction in pore of unsaturated soil cause surface tension and surface force so it makes negative pore water pressure and increases effective stress as a result. Therefore, negative pore water pressure in partially saturated soil affects the soil structure and degree of saturation and it is important to evaluate accurately unsaturate flow and behavior. In this study, the shear strength characteristics of the seven sandy soils were investigated using consolidated drained triaxial tests with special emphasis on the effects of the negative pore pressure and the matric suction. These tests involved shearing under either a constant net confining pressure and varying matric suction or under a constant matric suction and varying net normal stress.
This study presents the numerical results of soil-water characteristic curve for sandy soil by pore network model. The Jumunjin sand is subjected to the high resolution 3D X-ray computed tomographic imaging and its pore structure is constructed by the web of pore body and pore channel. The channel radius, essential to the computation of capillary pressure, is obtained based on the skeletonization and Euclidean Distance transform. The experimentally obtained soil-water characteristic curve corroborates the numerically estimated one. The pore channel radius defined by minimum radii of pore throat results in the slightly overestimation of air entry value, while the overall evolution of capillary pressure resides in the acceptable range. The relative permeability computed by a series of suggested models runs above that obtained by pore network model at high degree of saturation.
This study was conducted to characterize on the relationships among rainfall intensity, slope angle and pore water pressure in the gneissic weathered soil by landslide laboratory flume tests. Under the several test conditions dependent on rainfall intensity and slope angle, the authors measured pore water pressure, failure and displacement of slope on a regular time interval. According to the test results, the increasing times of pore water pressures have direct proportional trends to the rainfall intensity. The pore water pressure was increased earlier at the head part of slope than the toe part. Compared with the test results of Chae et al(2006), the results of this study explain that the seepage velocity in the gneissic weathered soil is slower than that in the standard sands. It results in faster and ear-lier increase of pore water pressure at the head part of slope due to slow flow of water in the gneissic weathered soil. In case of the relationship between slope angle and pore water pressure, gentle slope angle has faster increase of pore water pressure than steeper slope angle. It is also thought to be due to slow seepage velocity and flow velocity in the gneissic weathered soil.
Coupled finite element analysis is carried out to study the effect of degree of saturation on the vertical displacements and pore water pressures simultaneously by developing a FORTRAN90 code. The finite element formulation adopted in the present study is based upon Biot's consolidation theory to include partially saturated soils. Numerical methods are applied to a two-dimensional plane strain strip footing (flexible) problem and the effect of variable degree of saturation on the response of excess pore water pressure dissipation and settlement of the footing is studied. The immediate settlement in the case of partly saturated soils is larger than that of a fully saturated soil, the reason being the presence of pore air in partially saturated soils. On the other hand, the excess pore water pressure for partially saturated soil are smaller than those for fully saturated soil.
