Laboratory scale experiments were carried out to delineate the effects of liquid phases, such as soil water and light nonaqeous phase liquid (LNAPL) on the transport of gaseous ozone in unsaturated soil. Soil water enhanced the transport of ozone due to water film effect, which prevents direct reaction between soil particles and gaseous ozone, and increased water content reduced the breakthrough time of ozone because of increased average linear velocity and decreased air-water interface area. Diesel fuel as LNAPL also played a similar role with water film, so the breakthrough time of ozone in diesel-contaminated soil was significantly reduced compared with uncontaminated soil. Ozone breakthrough time was retarded with increased diesel concentration, however, because of high reactivity of diesel fuel with ozone. In unsaturated soil containing two liquids of soil water and LNAPL, the transport of ozone was mainly influenced by nonwetting fluid, diesel fuel in this study.
Recently many countries have become interested in the development of cold or arctic regions. The construction of engineered structures in those regions demands an understanding of the deformation characteristics of frozen soil. However, an understanding of frozen soil behavior poses difficult problems owing to the complex interaction between the soil particles and the ice matrix. In this research, a series of laboratory tests was performed to investigate the variations in the unconfined compression strength and split tensile strength of weathered granite soil and mixed soil (standard sand and kaolinite) in 15 degrees below zero environments. In the frozen soil tests, specimens were prepared with various water and clay contents, and then the interrelationships between four factors (water content, clay content, unconfined compression strength, split tensile strength) were analyzed. The test results were summarized as follows; as the water content was increased, the unconfined compressive and split tensile strengths also increased in frozen soil. However as the clay content was increased, the unconfined compressive and split tensile strengths were lowered. In the case of frozen soil that contained little clay content, the strength decreased rapidly in mixed soil (standard sand and kaolinite) when the frozen specimen was broken. On the other hand, in the cases of mixed soil that contained a high clay content and weathered granite soil, the strength decreased relatively slowly.

This study was conducted to find out a useful bioremediation technology for heavy metal contaminated soil and water. We isolated strain CPB from heavy metal contaminated soil and evaluated the tolerance level and adsorption capacity of strain CPB to heavy metals (Strain is not determined yet). Strain CPB showed variable tolerance limit to different kinds heavy metal or concentrations of heavy metals. The growth of strain CPB was significantly inhibited by mixed heavy metals (Cd+Cu+Pb+Zn) than that of by single heavy metal. Strain CPB showed high binding capacity with Pb (Pb>Cd>Cu>Zn). In general, strain CPB showed high uptake of heavy metals such as Pb, Cd and Cu. It was observed that the capacity of heavy metal uptake from mixture of heavy metals was reduced in comparison with single heavy metal treatment. But total contents of heavy metal bound with cell in mixed heavy metal showed higher than in single heavy metal treatment. Heavy metal adsorption in cells was affected by several external factors, such as temperature and pH etc.. The optimum temperature and pH of the adsorption of heavy metal into cells were ca. $25{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ and pH ca. $5{\sim}7$, respectively. A large number of the electron dense particles were found mainly on the cell wall and cell membrane fractions, which was determined by transmission electron microscope. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the electron dense particles were the heavy metal complexes the substances binding with heavy metals.

The atmospheric aerosols collected at the 1100 site located in Mt. Halla have been analyzed to investigate their compositions and chemical characteristics . The average concentrations of water-soluble cations were in the order of N $H_{4}$$^{+}$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > N $a^{+}$ > $K^{+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ during the spring, showing high increase of $Ca^{2+}$ concentration with the value of 0.60 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ $m^3$, and N $H_{4}$$^{+}$> N $a^{+}$> $K^{+}$> $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ during the other seasons. The average concentrations of anions have shown in the order of S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ > N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ >C $l^{[-10]}$ for all seasons, and S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ and N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ had higher concentrations in spring with the values of 4.84 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ $m^3$ and 1.08 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ $m^3$, respectively. From the analytical data of size-segregated particles by cascade impactor sampling, the components of N $H_{4}$$^{+}$, S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$, N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ and $K^{+}$ were distributed mainly in fine particles, but $Ca^{2+}$, N $a^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and C $l^{[-10]}$ were included mostly in coarse particles. The correlation coefficients of nss-S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$/N $H_{4}$$^{+}$, nss-S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$/ $K^{+}$ and N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ /nss-C $a^{2+}$ showed quite high values with 0.871, 0.857 and 0.654, respectively Based on the study of enrichment factors, it is considered that N $a^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, C $l^{[-10]}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ components were delivered from oceanic and soil sources, but S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$, N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ and N $H_{4}$$^{+}$ might have other source origins. The factor analysis study showed the aerosol at the 1100 site was influenced mainly by anthropogenic factors, followed by oceanic and soil factors. followed by oceanic and soil factors.

Volume change of the dredged soils is composed of loss amount of the soil particles flowing over an outflow weir with water and settlements due to both the self-weight consolidation in reclaimed layer and the desiccation at the surface of reclaimed layer. In order to estimate the amount of soil particles flowing over an outflow weir with water, the breakage theory and the results of hydrometer analyses. To verify a validity of the proposed procedure, evaluated loss ratio is compared with various estimates from the other existing methods.
Asthma and allergic rhinitis due to outdoor spider mites are major health problems worldwide. The sensitization route to spider mites has not yet been well elucidated. We examined the microstructure of faecal pellets and silk of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Black and white pellets of the two-spotted spider mites faeces contain a large amount of plant pigment waste products. Black faecal pellets are strawberry-shaped. White faecal pellets are silken threads. These pellets are likely to be the source of allergens of relevant mites because desiccated faeces particles probably disintegrate and become incorporated into dust particles more readily than whole bodies or encased internal organs. We conclude that the importance of spider mites in respiratory allergy needs emphasis.
Dustfall particles were collected by the modified American dust jar (wide inlet bottle type) at 6 sampling sites in Pusan area from March, 1999 to February, 2000. Thirteen chemical species (Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Si, and Zn) were analyzed by AAS and ICP. The purposes of this study were to estimate qualitatively various bulk deposition flux of dustfall and insoluble components by applying regional and seasonal distribution. Dustfall amount of regional variations were found in order of coastal zone, industrial zone, commercial zone, agricultural zone and residential zone, and seasonal total dustfall had higher concentrations during spring for 6.741 ton/${km}^2$/season, lower concentrations during summer for 1.989 ton/${km}^2$/season, and annual total concentration was 17.742 ton/${km}^2$/year. The regional distributions of enrichment factor show well-defined anthropogenic metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) at industrial and agricultural zone, and contribution rate of soil particles were found in order of summer, fall, winter and spring. Factor loading effects of chemical composition of dustfall were found in order of road traffic emission source and combustion processed source, industrial activity source, soil source and marine source.

In this study, aluminum electrodes were put in marine clay which was taken from the south coast in Korea to increase the undrained shear strength by inducing the densification and cementation between clay particles and precipitates which were developed by electric decomposition in an electrode. To raise the cementation rate and reduce treatment time, high electric current (2.5A) was applied in each electrode at a semi-pilot scale soil box with marine clay. After the tests, the undrained shear strength was measured at designated points using a static cone penetration test device and sampling was conducted simultaneously in order to measure water content, pH and electric conductivity which would be the key for configuring the cementation effects indirectly. In the results of electric decomposition in aluminum electrode, the measured shear strength was increased considerably compared to the initial shear strength because of the cementation effect between iron ions and soil particles.

The use of oyster shells is proposed as a substitute construction material for geotechnical applications. To investigate recycling possibility as a substitute of sand compaction pile (SCP) for oyster shells, the geotechnical characteristics including permeability and shear strength of crushed oyster shell, sand and crushed oyster shell-sand mixted soil. Experimental results show that the crushed oyster shells are lighter than sand in weight, and have similar characteristics on permeability to sand. The results of direct shear test show that the measured value of friction angle ${\Phi}$ of crushed oyster shell was lager than that of sand. It would be expected that more angular particles (crushed oyster shells) would interlock more thoroughly than rounded particles (send).
We collected and analyzed PM10 samples to account for the characteristics of heavy metallic elements for yellow sand and non-yellow sand during springtime of 2002 at Busan, The mean PM10 mass concentration for springtime of 2002 was $219.82{\mu}g/m^3$ with the maximum $787.50{\mu}g/m^3$ and the minimum $19.44{\mu}g/m^3$. The mean concentration of metallic elements contained in PM10 are shown as follows : Si>Ca>Fe>Al>Na, respectively. The ratio of mean PM10 mass concentration for yellow sand($362.7{\mu}g/m^3$) to that for non-yellow sand($48.3{\mu}g/m^3$) was 7.5, the significant positive correlation (P<0.05) was found between yellow sand and non-yellow sand. The metallic elements concentration ratios of yellow sand to the non-yellow sand were over 10 times for Al, Ca, Mg, 4~8 times for Fe, Si, Mn. But the concentration of Na, Cu, Zn for non-yellow sand was higher than those of yellow sand. The crustal enrichment factor of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, K, Mn, Na, Ni for yellow sand was higher that of non-yellow sand over 10 times, and concentration rate of soil particles of yellow sand was increased 2.3 times that of nonyellow sand.
