During routine surveys for pest and pathogen incidences at a golf course in 2007, circular to irregular patches of stunted, chlorotic and wilted turfgrass var. Pencross were noticed in Jinhae, Gyeongnam province, Korea. Soil samples collected from those diseased patches of the golf course yielded high population (average 126 nematodes/$100\;cm^3$) of a stunt nematode, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni, which is described and illustrated in this paper with light and scanning electron micrographs. This is the first report on the occurrence of T. claytoni in turfgrass in Korea.
Caenorhabditis elegans(C. elegans) is a free-living soil nematode that commonly used as a biological model and recently, much work has been done using C. elegans as a toxicity model. To evaluate the acute toxicity of phenols to C. elegans, worms were subsequently exposed to nine different xenobiotics. This study described lethal toxicity, reproductive toxicity and movement inhibition using 2-propylphenol, 4-propylphenol, 2-tert-butylphenol, 3-tert-butylphenol, 4-tert-butylphenol, 2-phenylphenol, 4-phenylphenol, nonylphenol and 4-dodecylphenol to C. elegans for 24 hr or 72 hr. We found that phenols used in this study were very toxic to C. elegans. The order of lethal toxicity, reproductive toxicity and movement inhibition is as follows. 4-propylphenol > 2-phenylphenol > 2-tert-butylphenol > 2-propylphenol > nonylphenol > B-tert-butylphenol > 4-dodefylphenol > 4-tert-butylphenol > 4-phenylphenol.
In 6 locations of Kyong-gi province, 120 soybean fields were examined to study the distribution of plant nematode genera. Heterodera glycines was found in $71.7\%$ of soybean fields examined. Among nematode genera infesting over $50\%$ of soybean fields were Aphclcllchus $70.8\%$, Aphelenchoides $68.3\%$, Tylenchus $66.7\%$ and Ditylenchus $52,5\%$. The populations of genera Aphelenchoides, Aphelenchus, Ditylenchus and Tylenchorhynchus were over 1000 nematodes/500g of soil sample in some soybean fields. Of the genera found from the survey, Heterodera, Trichodorus. Xiphinema and Pratylenchus seem to be most important to soybean. Fourteen genera were identified from Yeoncheon, and 13 from Yangju, 10 each from Paju, Kimpo and Namyangju and 9 from Goyang.

U.S. cotton production is suffering from the yield loss caused by the reniform nematode (RN), Rotylenchulus reniformis. Management of this devastating pest is of utmost importance because, no upland cotton cultivar exhibits adequate resistance to RN. Nine populations of RN from distinct regions in Alabama and one population from Mississippi were studied and thirteen morphometric features were measured on 20 male and 20 female nematodes from each population. Highly correlated variables (positive) in female and male RN morphometric parameters were observed for body length (L) and distance of vulva from the lip region (V) (r = 0.7) and tail length (TL) and c' (r = 0.8), respectively. The first and second principal components for the female and male populations showed distinct clustering into three groups. These results show pattern of sub-groups within the RN populations in Alabama. A one-way ANOVA on female and male RN populations showed significant differences ($p{\leq}0.05$) among the variables. Multiple sequence alignment (MSA) of 18S rRNA sequences (421) showed lengths of 653 bp. Sites within the aligned sequences were conserved (53%), parsimony-informative (17%), singletons (28%), and indels (2%), respectively. Neighbor-Joining analysis showed intra and inter-nematodal variations within the populations as clone sequences from different nematodes irrespective of the sex of nematode isolate clustered together. Morphologically, the three groups (I, II and III) could not be distinctly associated with the molecular data from the 18S rRNA sequences. The three groups may be identified as being non-geographically contiguous.
The seasonal availability and abundance of the free-living stages of sheep nematodes is a key factor in the occurrence and severity of parasitic infection, and studies of larvae ecology could result in more rational control measures. In the present study seasonal pasture contamination and availability of nematodes for grazing sheep was examined as a baseline work for nematode control program at Namwon Branch, National Animal Breeding Institute during the period April 1988 through March 1989. Standard meteorological measurements were available from Unbong Sub-station, Honam Crops Experiment Station located about 200m from the experimental site. A total of 5 kinds of nematode larvae was detected: Haemonchus contortus was most prevalent (38.0%) with a decreasing order of Ostertagia spp (35.1%), Trichostrongylus spp (19.8%), nematodirus spp (6.6%), and Oesophagostomum spp (0.5%). A succession of species was recorded, in particular Ostertagia spp in May; Haemonchus contortus in June and July; Trichostrongylus spp in July and August; Nematodirus spp in August and September. These results can be incorporated into the nematode control program. To make a more rational control program, however, repeated herbage larval counts should be undertaken soil larval counts and fecal larval counts in the future.
Five nematophagous fungi were evaluated for their nematicidal effect in vitro on Rhabditis sp. and Meloidogyne hapla in soil. Inocula of Arthrobotrys arthrobotryoides, A. conoides, A. oligospora, Dactylella lobata, and Fusarium oxyaporum were grown in moistened corn-sandy soil and chopped potato-sandy soil media, and incubated at 26$^{\circ}C$ for one week. The prepared inocula were incorporated in autoclaved sandy soil, mixing thoroughly at rates equ-invalent to 1:50, 1:100, 1:200, and 1:400, repectively, before 80g of the mixture carrying 100 Rhabditis sp. was put into petri plates. Nematophagous fungi effectively teduced the popuation of Rhabditis sp. in soil in a week or two following treatment of the incula at concentration of 1:50 and 1:100. The optimum was at $25^{\circ}C$ for nematicidial effect as high as 80-100%. The at the rate of 1:100 prepared incula were incorporated in auto-claved soil, where 100 Juveniles M. hapla were introduced per 80% soil. All fungi infected the M. hapla effectively in soil, caysing more than 90% mortality within one week. This result indicated the potential value of these fungi as promising biocontrol agents.

Plant parasitic nematodes were isolated from 274 soil samples collected from soybean fields in Korea. Nematode importance rating in soybean is proposed based on this study and by reviewing other reports. Soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines is the most important nematode species and rated as $1^{st}$ because it detected from 38%(range 25-51%) of soil samples with high density except Jeju province. Root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne spp. is rated $2^{nd}$ and is more widely distributed in southern provinces, Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, and Jeju province (detection rate ranged 16-44%). Pratylenchus is rated $3^{rd}$ and is more frequently detected from northern provinces such as Gyeonggi and Gangwon (detection rate ranged 10-13%). Helicotylenchus is rated $4^{th}$ and is particularly important in Jeju province (detection rate is 62% and numbers averaged 571 nematodes/$300cm^3$ soil), which is the main production area for sprouting soybean in Korea. Tylenchorhynchus, Paratylenchus, Criconema, Criconemoide, Mesocriconema, Ogma, Xiphinema, Paratrichodorus, and Trichodorus occur in low frequency and density, thus they are rated to $5^{th}$. We propose to delete following nematode genus from the list of soybean parasitic nematode in Korea because their parasitism on soybean is unconfirmed or negligible; Tylenchus, Aphelenchus, Aphelenchoides, Ditylenchus, Hirschmanniella immamuri, Basiria graminophila, Psilenchus, and Pseudhalenchus. Therefore, we revised 30 species in 16 genera as soybean parasitic nematodes in Korea. Importance rating is $1^{st}$ Heterodera glycines, $2^{nd}$ Meloidogyne spp., $3^{rd}$ Pratylenchus spp. and $4^{th}$ Helicotylenchus spp. especially in Jeju province.
Effects of chitin and chitosan treatments on soil microorganisms and the mesofauna were investigated in a microcosm and a fumigated field experiment. Responses of microorganisms were determined using microbial phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis, whereas responses of the mesofauna were measured in terms of the abundances of nematodes and microarthropods. Soil nitrate concentration increased on the application of chitin. Overall, chitin promoted bacterial and fungal abundance, leading to an increase in abundance of free-living soil nematodes that feed on decomposers. The ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids was highest in the chitin-treated soil. Chitosan had a minimal effect on the abundance of microorganisms; however, it reduced the abundance of collembolans in the microcosm experiment. These results indicate that the application of chitin has beneficial effects on the supply of nutrients and promotion of the abundance of soil organisms.
The use of cover crops has a beneficial effect on sustainable soil management in pear orchards. We aimed to compare changes in soil chemical properties and biota with the use of different cover crops. We tested the effects of five cover plants, including hairy vetch, orchard grass, rattail fescue, rye, and perennial ryegrass. Use of different cover crops had a minimal impact on soil chemical properties through three year experiments. The aboveground biomass was greatest with the use of rye. The potential amounts of returnable N and P were highest when leguminous hairy vetch was used as a cover plant. Changes in the composition of the microbial community were investigated by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Microbial PLFAs were highest with the use of rattail fescue and lowest with the use of hairy vetch. Minimal changes in the abundances of nematodes and microarthropods suggested that there was no bottom-up control in the soil ecosystem. The results also show that increases in aboveground biomass and nutrient content with the use of cover crops may not promote the abundance of soil organisms.
Korean entomopathogenic nematode strain were evaluated against white grubs, Popillia quadriguttata, Ectinohoplia rufipes and Phyllopertha diversa in laboratory. In addition we examined the efficacy of entomopatogenic nematode, Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP strain against white grubs in Seaside Golf Club in Gimpo, Gyeonggii and persistence of entomopatogenic nematode in fairway of Anyang Benest Golf Club in Gunpo, Gyeonggii. In laboratory Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Hamyang strain showed 95% mortality against Popillia quadriguttata. H. bacteriophora Hamyang strain and Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP induced 80% mortality against 3rd instar of Ectinohoplia rufipes. However, the letter showed only 60% mortality against Phyllopertha diversa. White grub density was reduced to 39% by the application of Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP at the rate of $2.24{\times}10^9$ infective juveniles $ha^{-1}$ compared with control in Seaside Golf Club. Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP persisted for two months at $5{\sim}10$ cm soil depth but not persisted at $0{\sim}5$ cm soil depth for the same periods when applied at the rate of $2.47{\times}10^9$ infective juveniles $ha^{-1}$.
