The liming effect of the four different siliceous materials with six grades of fineness were investigated in comparison with limestone under the submerged condition for three months, and the alkalinity extracted by 0.07N-EDTA and N-NaOAc solutions were determined to evaluate the neutralizing power of these materials. 1. Fused phosphate took 20 days with finer particles than 60 mesh (Tyler), 34 days with -40+48 mesh particles and 84 days with -20+25 mesh particles to reach the pH 5.5 from pH 4.0 of initial soil pH. These adjusted soil acidities were less 1.0-0.5 unit of pH compared with the pH of particles of limestone. 2. The basic reduction furnace slag increased the pH value to 5.5 in the finer particles than 100 mesh, but the other coarse particles appeared to have slow changes of the soil acidity to pH 4.5-4.7 for the three months. Wollastonite didn't affect the increase of soil pH in coarser particles than 25 mesh whereas other finer particles increased upto pH 4.5-5.0. Blast furnace slag is definitely slower through all sizes of particles. 3. In the relationship between the adjusted soil acidities and alkalinities dissolved in EDTA and NaOAc solution, NaOAc-alkalinity agreed quite closely to the activity of neutralizing value of silicates and limestone containing fineness of particles. The correlation coefficients between the amended soil acidities and NaOAc-alkalinities were stabilized with high significance at the 8 days after water logging and 16 days with the EDTA-alkalinities.

To protect the surface of ground-cutting slopes and ground-raised slopes and to recover environment-friendly slopes at the national road expansion construction between Gamchon and Yaechon, test-construction work was done using several modes of hydro-seeding measures to select a suitable construction method through the field survey; the results were as follows : As a result of survey on physio-chemical characteristics of soil, the average soil inclination on ground-raised slopes was from 4.73 mm to 5.37 mm; the average soil acidity was from pH 6.47 to 6.73; the average soil humidity was within the scope of 0.57~1.70 %,; the average soil inclination on ground-cutting slopes was 9.17~10.43mm; the average soil acidity was pH 6.67~6.77 and the average soil humidity was within the scope of 0.53~1.27 %; considered overall, they showed generally satisfactory base materials for plant breeding. As a result of the number of sprouting individuals, the average sprouting number of individuals on test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray construction methods and the average number of sprouting individuals on other test spots executed by furrow-digging with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures were 1,172 number of per square meter and 970 number of per square meter respectively; thus they showed higher numerical value comparing with other test spots. Likewise, the average number of sprouting individuals on test spots of the ground-cutting slopes executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and the average number of sprouting individuals on other test spot executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures were found to be 1,107 number of per square meter and 1,105 number of per square meter respectively, whose numerical value showed rather higher other test spots. As a result of a survey on living plants' breeding index [dried weight], the weight in dried state on test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and other test spots executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures on both ground-raised and ground-cutting slopes was found to be higher and showed similar characteristics statistically. As a result of survey on the surface-covering degree of ground-raised slopes, nine weeks after test construction, test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and other test spots executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures showed commonly more than 70% of surface-covering degree, but other test spots showed only below 35% of surface covering degree; especially in case of test spots by Verdvol seed spray measures, they showed 10% of the lowest surface-covering. Surface-covering degree on the test spot of ground-cutting slopes nine weeks after test construction showed more than 75% both executed by Coir net with Seed spray construction method and executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures. As a result of survey on appearing plants on the test spots, there dominates Eragrostis curvula both on ground-raised slopes and on ground-cutting slopes with other seeding plant life's lower breeding and there appear intruders, such as Setaria viridis Beauv, Digitaria sanguinalis Scop, and Chenopodium album var.centrorubrum Makino. As for water-borne excavation and soil's washing-away on the slopes, there happened less washing-away and water-borne excavation with good breeding of plant life on test spots executed both by Coir net with Seed spray construction method and by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures, but there happened much more soil's washing-away along with water-home excavation at the test spot executed by Seed spray with measures. After the research results of test construction sites are examined overall, it's presumed that furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures [interval between lines is 40cm, 5cm in depth] will be preferred to prevent erosion and water-home excavation of slopes located within the construction sites.
In order to know the effect of sludge from water treatment plants un agricultural environment, an experiment of water treatment sludge application for Altari radish (Raphanus sativus L.) was carried out. And the results were as follows ; 1. The pH of water treatment sludge was 7.2, which was higher than that of the experimental soil. The exchangeable Ca content in the sludge was very high being 29me/100g sludge. So when the sludge was applied to the soil, amending effect for soil acidity was supposed. 2. With the application of the water treatment sludge to the soil, soil pH and organic matter content were increased. With the increase of the level of sludge application, contents of crude fiber and Ca in Altari radish were increased, white those of P and Mg tended to decrease. 3. The length of the root and the amount of fresh yield of the whole plant of radish tended to increase with the increase of sludge application, and this tendency was more evident on the infertile soil. From the above results, it was concluded that the fresh yield of Altari radish increased up to 75ton/ha sludge application on the fertile soil, but the yield decreased when higher levels of sludge was applied. While on the infertile soil, the yield increased up to the application of 300ton/ha, and the heavier application level did not adversely affect the yield of Altari radish.
This study was carried out to clarify the effects of grassland afforestation on some chemical properties of the Japanese ceder(Cryptomeria japonica) forest soil in Cheju Island. The following results were obtained in this study ; 1. T-C, T-N, exch. cations and base saturation in the surface soil(0~10cm) decreased sharply from planting to crown closure. However, after crown closure, exch. Ca and Mg increased considerably. On the other hand, there were no definit changes below surface soil. 2. In vertical distribution of chemical properties, T-C, T-N, exchangeable acidity and exch. cations decreased with soil depth. Especially, exch. Ca and Mg of surface soil in closed stand show a higher value than that in open stand, but there were no variation below surface soil. 3. In closed stand, the amounts of exch. Ca, Mg and K were 1.8 times, 1.6 times and 1.5 times greater than those in open stand. There was no significant difference between open and closed stand in T-C and T-N. 4. The ratios of the amounts of nutrients in surface soil to those in mineral horizons(ha, 50cm) between the open and closed stand showed 30% and 50% for exch. Ca, 30% and 40% for exch. Mg, 38% and 38% for exch. K, respectively.
This study was carried out to examine the effects of soil sulfur mixture on the control apple valsa canker in apple orchard for two years. In organic apple orchard, The recovery percentages of apple valsa canker were compared among control (no treatment), lime sulfur, and soil sulfur in organic orchards. In conventional apple orchards, those of recovery percentages were compared among control, neoasozin, lime sulfur, and soil sulfur. Compared with control, soil sulfur treatments significantly improved the recovery percentages of apple valsa canker infected trees in organic orchard. However, there were no differences between lime sulfur and soil sulfur treatment in organic apple orchard, except BongHyun orchard experiment in 2013. Compared with control fruit qualities, fruit skin red color and fruit firmness were improved in lime sulfur and soil sulfur treatment, respectively. In conventional orchard, apple trees treated with lime sulfur, soil sulfur or neoasozin improved recovery percentages, compared with those of control trees. Soil sulfur treatments recovered 87.5~97.5% of infected 'Fuji'/MM106 apple trees in organic and conventional apple orchards. The trees applied with neoasozin showed significant lower shoot growth than those of soil sulfur treatment in conventional orchard. Soli sulfur treatment improved fruit red color, but did not affected fruit weight, fruit firmness, soluble solids concentrations, and titratable acidity.
Humic substances of 17 organic fertilizers available on the market were the objects of study. The list of ingredients for formulation of them comprised fish meal. bone meal, oil-cakes, brewer's grains, peat, sawdust, wood bark, zeolite, soil conditioner, live-stock droppings, amino acid fermentation byproduct, chaff, limestone and others. Humic and fulvic acids were isolated from those substances and given chemical and spectroscopic analyses. Nutritional values of the organic fertilizers showed big diversity. Humification of organic matter was incomplete for some of the fertilizers as indicated by a high C/N ratio. Extractable humic acid percentage was higher, in general, than that of fulvic acid. Also the relative content of humin increased with advanced humification. Total acidity was closely related to phenolic hydroxyl groups. Relationships between carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. and carboxyl and alcoholic hydroxyl groups were very significant. Ultraviolet and visible light absorption spectra of humic and fulvic acids were substantially similar. The types of humic acids were B. P, and Rp. Two humic acids of the 17 samples belonged to B type. 3 to P type and all the rest to Rp type.
We conducted this research to observe the changes of surface morphology and composition of clay minerals influenced by various concentrations of fluoric acid. Hydrofluoric acid (HA), a solution of hydrogen fluoride (HF) in water, is a colourless solution that is highly corrosive, capable of dissolving many materials, especially oxides. To do this, we treated several concentrations of HA on the ground soil samples collected from the agricultural experimental station located at Chungnam National University to observe the influence of fluoric acid on the changes of surface structures and elemental composition of clay particles. Generally, microscopic examination showed that the HA can not only attack an edge of clay particles but also start at any point where structural defects and weaknesses predisposed sites to acid. The orderly flake arrangement of clay minerals may reflect certain crystal symmetry elements. The ESEM-EDS results of element composition of clay particles influenced by HA indicated the changes of structures of clay minerals. It is also clear from the formation of etch figures and element composition of clay particles that the product layer at least partially dissolved or disintegrated in the presence of acid. Conclusively, the clay structures can be strongly influenced by concentrations of HA, resulting in changes of physical and chemical properties that can determine the behavior of solute transport as well as mobility of ions in soils.
To obtain the basic information for weed management in polder land, a colligated assessment on weed distribution and it`s plant sociological indices on Gyewha polder land were arranged. At the situation of assessment, the Gyewha polder land was reclaimed with aim with paddy-rice production. As a result of reclamation, the salinity of most soil samples were below 0.3%, and acidity ranged from pH 5.5 to 6.5. Total weed species were counted as much as 17 species (3 gramineae, 7 cyperucese, and 8 broad-leaved species), and a most dominant species, Scirpus maritimus, were succeeded with Monochoria v., Eleocharis a., and Cyperus d., etc. by reclamation. Declining of soil salinity and soil pH, the number of weed species, individuals, biomass, species diversity, evenness, sociability index were increased, but the population particularity was weaken in tendencies. By developing of reclamation, the weed species which is summer annual broad leaf, wind and water disseminating, and tussock formed species are increased instead of salt-resistant, perennial cyperus, and rhizomatous extending species.
This study investigated some of the specific ecological characteristics Torreya nucifera forest and its health conditions so that was drawn from four different management strategies, such as Types A, B, C, and D, for protected areas of forest genetic resources. Type A refers to passive management which routinely keeps the current status of forests by removing competitive trees or curing damaged ones. Type B, as active one which improves Torreya nucifera forest, includes increase of soil pH and removal of Sasa borealis, Phyllostachys bambusoides, and deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Quercus variabilis, Carpinus tschonoskii et al.. Type C is another passive one which reduces soil acidity within Chamae cyparisobtusa forest and maintains the existing forests. Type D is another active one which decreases soil acidity and simultaneously reduces problems associated with competitive and invasive plants to nurture the young trees. At last, it is important to note that the protected areas for forest genetic resources need to be entitled to categories III(natural monument) or IV(habitat/species management area) in accordance with protected area management guidelines of IUCN.
Basic oxygen furnace @OF) slag. a by-pradud of thc iron and steelmaking industry produced in largc quantities in Korea, poszs a subslantial disposal challenge. The BOF slag used in this study was if3 CaCO, in total n e u ~ ~ pnowger and application of 7-8 Mgha' was needed to bring soil pH to 6.5 horn pH 5.0-5.5 m silly clay or clay loam sod wnlained about 10% orgaoic matter. A field assay was conducted to shldg whether BOP slag could bc used as a dolomitic k i n g agent for agricullural soils. Four slag rates (0, 4, 8, 12 Mgha-')were investigated for their effcfect on soil pmperti~, mineral concentralions in leaf tissues of rice and soybean, and yield of the crops. Slag application at 8 Mgha-' rate in paddy field increased pH, Ca Mg, P, Si and Fe wntenl in sail and rice yield by 4.3-14.25 depending an the soil type. h upland field the 8 Mghaf ratc increa3ed pH, Ca and Fe wntent m soil and soybean yield by 36.6%. Thus, BOF slag appears to be a useful liming mate&\ulcornerl for corrzch~gs oil acidity on both paddy and upland ficld soils and for innwing Ca, Mg, P, Si, and Fe wncenhation in plants.
