Design Optimization of an Ozone Contactor Using Ozone Contactor Model (OCM) Software

  • Designing an ozone contactor is complicated because the residual ozone, log C. parvum inactivation, and bromate formation should be optimized with fluctuating water quality. OCM software was developed to assist a plant designer or an operator to fulfill the sophisticated optimization required in the design or operation of a new or an existing plant. In this article, numerical simulations were carried out using the OCM software for the design of a new ozone contactor under diverse design factors (i.e., three pHs, three temperatures, low and high dispersion numbers, and four and ten cells with complete mixing) with kinetic parameters obtained from the sand-filter effluent of a water treatment plant treating water from the Paldang impoundment. The results of the simulation suggested that a high residual ozone concentration at low pH and low temperature would be challenging, and PFR-like hydrodynamics could lower the residual ozone concentration. The inactivation of C. parvum oocysts increased at a lower pH. A lower dispersion number and more cell division increased the inactivation efficiency. Bromate was instantaneously formed during the initial ozonation stage. The effluent concentration was much lower than the regulatory levels imposed by the USEPA because of the low bromide level in raw water.

  • This paper describes the development of a software tool LCD FRAME that may guide the analyzing process for the electrical characteristics and the design procedure for constructing the thin film transistor liquid crystal display(TFT/LCD) packages. LCD FRAME can analyze its electrical characteristics from the TFT/LCD system package configuration, and provide the design variables to meet the user's requirements. These analysis and design procedure can be done in real time according to the model at simplified package level of TFT/LCD. LCD_FRAME is an object-oriented expert system which considers package elements as objects. With this LCD_FRAME software tool, we analyzed the I-V characteristics of a-Si TFT and its signal distortion which has maximum 1.58 $\mu$s delay along the panel scan line of the package containing 480 ${\times}$ 240 pixels. We designed the package structure of maximum 6.35 $\mu$s signal delays and 3360 ${\times}$ 780 pixels, and as a result we showed that the proper structure of 20 $\mu$m scan line width, 60$\mu$m panel TFT gate width and 8 $\mu$m gate length. This LCD_FRAME software tool provides results of the analysis and the design in the form of input files of the SPICE program, text data files, and graphic charts.

  • With the rapid industrialization and civilization development, noise has become a major problem in cities and is a very serious issue for the environment. Noise induced in a factory has a bad influenced on operation efficiency, accuracy and detail of work. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new noise evaluation software for predicting acoustic condition including noise properties during the design of a factory. Majority of commercial softwares for this purpose have been developed in foreign countries and they are quite expensive and hard to use. A new home-made software tool has been developed in the present work, which aimed at providing a more user-friendly environment. The tool developed in this work consists of four major part; the prediction and evaluation of noise in system design, database design, noise analysis development and 3D graphic modeling. The outcome of present work is expected to provide domestic users with a more user-friendly and economic acoustic design tool.

The Usefulness of Design Artifacts for Enterprise Object Oriented Software Development (대규모 객체지향소프트웨어개발에 있어 설계산출물의 유용성)

  • This paper surveyed 30 system designers and developers who had been participating in a project for five months to examine the usefulness of design artifacts for object-oriented system development. A set of nine requirement and design documents was selected in consideration of the IEEE guidelines. Overall the respondents appeared to agree that the artifacts were useful for system development. On the other hand, the contribution of design artifacts to maintenance was rated lower due to the frequent changes over the iterative process. Of the artifacts, considered more useful were use case specifications, UI design and operation specifications. The respondents were the most reluctant to write test cases. Designers did not like to document more details in the design artifacts than did developers. A future study is required to determine the economics end change management of documentation.

  • In recent years, design of an optimal blank shape is very important for sheet metal forming process in the automobile industry because the raw material cost rate is significant part in the automobile industry. With the design of an optimal blank shape, the engineer can protect a blank from an excessive holding force to improve the quality and reduce the ratio of material scrap. Therefore design of an optimal blank shape is inevitable in sheet metal forming process. However, if it causes a complicated shape of blank, it may be difficult to do the blank layout optimally. In this study, we developed software of optimal blank layout connected with the software of optimal blank shape design which was created in the past by the present authors. And by using these softwares, we would like to present the method in order to get optimal utilization ratio easily and precisely within short time for the sequence of works from design to blank layout.

The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than a science with increasing complexity of shape and thinness of section. Therefore, most of the die design is still dependent on personal judgement, intuition and experience. The objective of this study is to develop an software system which includes a design rule extracted from literatures and experts in the extrusion industry. The system also includes finite element simulation program. The developed system is effectively used to design extrusion processes and dies with lead time and trial extrusion.

  • This paper deals with the development of an automatic design software for DC servo motor control, which provides good performance with rapid response and velocity control accuracy. In the proposed method, the design is automatically executed using Matlab, and iterative learning control algorithms are used in the design process. We applied this method to 50W, 100W, 200W, 300W, 500W, 750W, 1.8kW and 4.5kW DC servo motors which are widely used in the industry. We compare the results of the manual tuning design method with that of the automatic design method presented in this paper. From the experimental results, we can find that the performance of the proposed method is better than that of the manual tuning design method.

  • Design of turbo-compressors has been considered to be a high-tech which only a few early industrialized countries could do efficiently since it requires not only deep understanding of high level gas dynamics and complex fluid dynamics but also accumulation of experiences in the feedback of expensive manufacturing and difficult testing to the design theory and empirical design coefficients. CFturbo is the turbomachinery design software which incorporates traditional well formulated German design technology and latest software technology of 3-dimensional graphics. Fine/Turbo is a powerful tubomachinery-oriented CFD package with quality structured grid topology templates for almost all the tubomachinery configurations for easy, fast and accurate CFD analysis.
