  • We propose a novel still image compression system which supports a high quality text compression function. The system segments the text from the image and compresses the text with a high quality. The system shows 48:1 high compression ratio using context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding. The arithmetic coding performs the high compression by the codeblocks in the bitplane. The input of the system consists of a segmentation mode and a ROI(Region Of Interest) mode. In segmentation mode, the input image is segmented into a foreground consisting of text and a background consisting of the remaining region. In ROI mode, the input image is represented by the region of interest window. The high quality text compression function with a high compression ratio shows that the proposed system can be comparable with the JPEG2000 products. This system also uses gray coding to improve the compression ratio.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a technique to diagnose an accurate and reliable condition of civil infrastructure by collecting and analyzing responses from distributed sensors. In recent years, aging civil structures have been increasing and they require further developed SHM technology for development of sustainable society. Wireless smart sensor and network technology, which is one of the recently emerging SHM techniques, enables more effective and economic SHM system in comparison to the existing wired systems. Researchers continue on development of the capability and extension of wireless smart sensors, and implement performance validation in various in-laboratory and outdoor full-scale experiments. This paper presents a summary of recent (mostly after 2010) researches on smart sensors, focused on the newly developed hardware, software, and validation examples of the developed smart sensors.

  • The paper has analyzed and summarized about the theoretical problem occurred in the CAQC, and has developed the learning model focused on the histogram as a case study. The range of study is to systematize the basic method of histogram generally used, and to make step by step procedures under the interactive relation with the improvement of the theory that must be added in case of the calculation by the aided of MS-Excel software. A histogram is the theory to understand the population distribution from which samples are extracted, so alternative methods are presented to estimate the population shape through an experiment and a practice. In order to enlarge the application area of the histogram in the factory, the theory of normal test, the criteria of process capability index and the probability calculation of PPM are added to the histogram. The learning model of CAQC education is proposed that is consistent with the target of histogram to control and search the cause of item defectives fast and correctly.

  • The security of Internet systems critically depends on the capability to keep anti-virus (AV) software up-to-date and maintain high detection accuracy against new malware. However, malware variants evolve so quickly they cannot be detected by conventional signature-based detection. In this paper, we proposed a malware classification method based on sequence patterns generated from the network flow of malware samples. We evaluated our method with 766 malware samples and obtained a classification accuracy of approximately 40.4%. In this study, malicious codes were classified only by network behavior of malicious codes, excluding codes and other characteristics. Therefore, this study is expected to be further developed in the future. Also, we can predict the attack groups and additional attacks can be prevented.

  • The development of aircraft engine requires a lot of time and cost to estimate system attributes such as performance, reliability, stability and life. A virtual engine test based on "Numerical test cell" can extremely reduce the time and cost for the development of a hardware by coupling multidisciplinary analyses. This paper presents the development activities of full engine simulation programs in U.S.A. and Europe. NASA Glenn research center of U.S.A. leads the development efforts of NPSS(Numerical Propulsion System Simulation) by assembling the existing codes and improving their functions. VIVACE (Value Improvement through a Virtual Aeronautical Collaborative Enterprise), a consortium of universities, research centers and companies in Europe is developing the PROOSIS(PRopulsion Object Oriented SImulation Software) by integrating the various programs of the institutes. The capability for the domestic development is also estimated by surveying the current status.

  • Today, as railways increase their capacity and speeds, it is more important than ever to be completely aware of the state of vehicles fleet's condition to ensure the highest quality and safety standards, as well as being able to maintain the costs as low as possible. Operation of a modern, dynamic and efficient railway demands a real time, accurate and reliable evaluation of the infrastructure assets, including signal networks and diagnostic systems able to acquire functional parameters. In the conventional system, measurement data are reliably collected using coaxial wires for communication between sensors and the repository. As sensors grow in size, the cost of the monitoring system can grow. Recently, auto-powered wireless sensor has been considered as an alternative tool for economical and accurate realization of structural health monitoring system, being provided by the following essential features: on-board micro-processor, sensing capability, wireless communication, auto-powered battery, and low cost. In this work, an original harvester device is designed to supply wireless sensor system battery using train bogie energy. Piezoelectric materials have in here considered due to their established ability to directly convert applied strain energy into usable electric energy and their relatively simple modelling into an integrated system. The mechanical and electrical properties of the system are studied according to the project specifications. The numerical formulation is implemented with in-house code using commercial software tool and then experimentally validated through a proof of concept setup using an excitation signal by a real application scenario.

  • Ceramides are currently emerging as the major skin care ingredients due to !heir barrier properties in the stratum corneum of the human skin. Thus, major cosmetic companies have developed synthetic ceramide analogs for their own use. In this study, several ceramide mimic compounds , new skin barrier lipids, were designed and synthesized, and their physical and biological properties were investigated to evaluate their skin care capability. Several structures were designed from the variation of hydrophobic alkyl chain and hydrophilic moiety by the use of molecular modeling software. The selected targets were synthesized, and their properties and activities were studied as the pure form, in the emulsion, or in the lamellar mixture containing cholesterol and fatty acid. Some compounds, such as 1,3-bis(N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-palmitoylamino)-2-hydroxypropane, enhanced the restoration of skin barrier damaged by SDS(sodium dodecyl sulfate), and by acetone treatment. The rate of restoration was comparable to that of natural ceramides. The synthesized compounds alleviated SDS induced skin irritation and facilitated lamellar phase liquid crystal formation. The treatment of 1,3-Dis(N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-palmitoylam ino)-2-hyd roxypropane on the acetone damaged skin revealed that the compound promoted the recovery of intercellular lipid lamellar structure of stratum corneum layer. The replacement of palmitoyl groups of the compound with shorter alkyl chain gave lower emulsion viscosity and liquid crystal density, suggesting easier formulation and poorer barrier activity. Most of the synthesized compounds were non-irritable in various toxicological tests proving that they can be safely introduced to the skin care formulations.

  • This paper proposes a high-performance vector inner product calculation circuit for real-time object recognition based on SVM algorithm. SVM algorithm shows a higher detection rate than other object recognition algorithms. However, it requires a huge amount of computational efforts. Since vector inner product calculation is one of the major operations of SVM algorithm, it is important to implement a high-performance vector inner product calculation circuit for real-time object recognition capability. The proposed circuit adopts the pipeline architecture with six stages to increase the operating speed and makes it possible to recognize objects in real time based on SVM. The proposed circuit was described in Verilog HDL at RTL. For silicon verification, an MPW chip was fabricated using TSMC 180nm standard cell library. The operation of the implemented MPW chip was verified on the test board with test application software developed for the chip verification.

  • In this paper, a design of RISC-based transmission wrapper processor for TCP/IP protocol stack is described. The processor consists of input and output buffer memory with dual bank structure, 32-bit RISC microprocessor core, DMA unit with on-the-fly checksum capability, and memory module. To handle the various modes of TCP/IP protocol, hardware-software codesign approach based on RISC processor is used rather than the conventional state machine design. To eliminate large delay time due to sequential executions of data transfer and checksum operation, DMA module which can execute the checksum operation along with data transfer operation is adopted. The designed processor exclusive of variable-size input/output buffer consists of about 23,700 gates and its maximum operating frequency is about 167MHz under 0.35${\mu}m$ CMOS technology.
