Asphalt sealants for the crack repair of asphalt concrete road were prepared using waste lubricant oil in this work. The waste lubricant oil was compounded with asphalt(AP-5), SBS triblock copolymer, a tackifying agent(petroleum resin), and antioxidants. Cone penetration, softening point, ductility, elongation by tensile adhesion, and resilience of asphalt sealant compounds were measured. Cone penetration of asphalt sealant compounds increased with the increase of waste lubricant oil content while their softening point, ductility, and resilience decreased. By the addition of talc as an extender, softening point and resilience of asphalt sealants increased, but cone penetration, ductility, and elongation by tensile adhesion of those decreased with the proportion of talc content. The most economic asphalt sealant which could pass an ASTM specification could be manufactured by the big decrement of petroleum resin content.

This paper presents the details of size independent fracture energy and bi-linear tension softening relation for nano modified high strength concrete. Nano silica in powder form has been used as partial replacement of cement by 2 wt%. Two popular methods, namely, simplified boundary effect method of Karihaloo et al. (2003) and RILEM (1985) fracture energy with P-${\delta}$ tail correction have been employed for estimation of size independent fracture energy for nano modified high strength concrete (compressive strength ranges from 55 MPa to 72 MPa). It is found that both the methods gave nearly same values, which is an additional evidence that either of them can be employed for determination of size independent fracture energy. Bi-linear tension softening relation corresponding to their size independent fracture energy has been constructed in an inverse manner based on the concept of non-linear hinge from the load-crack mouth opening plots of notched three-point bend beams.
In this study, styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS)-styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt was prepared for waterproof-sheet to measure its properties including softening point, penetration, low temperature flexibility, viscosity and adhesion. Then the properties of SIS-SBS modified asphalt imparted with self-healing were optimized to seek for optimal compositions of SIS and SBS versus asphalt according to response surface methodology (RSM). As the content of SBS or SIS was increased, both properties of softening point and viscosity, measured at high temperature, were increased with a statistical significance. However, the increments of softening point and viscosity per unit content of SBS added, were observed to be greater than those per unit content of SIS added, respectively. It was due to the difference of thermal properties of SBS and SIS at high temperature that the cross-linking degree of SBS was increased by gelation accompanied with the increase of viscosity, while chain-entanglement of SIS was relatively reduced owing to a chain scission of poly(isoprene) blocks causing the decrease of viscosity. To the contrary, SIS-SBS modified asphalt showed a behavior of the least elasticity resulting in both the maximum of penetration and adhesion, measured at room temperature, as well as the lowest low temperature flexibility at the composition of SIS, 4 g and SBS, 8.5 g based on asphalt, 63 g.
Coal-tar pitch, a feedstock which can be heat-treated to create graphite, is composed of very complex molecules. Coal-tar pitch is a precursor of many useful carbon materials (e.g., graphite, carbon fibers, electrodes and matrices of carbon/carbon composites). Modified coal-tar pitch (MCTP) was prepared using two different heat-treatment methods and their properties were characterized and compared. One was prepared using heat treatment in nitrogen gas; the other was prepared under a pressure of 350 mmHg in air. The MCTPs were investigated to determine several properties, including softening point, C/H ratio, coke yield, formation of anisotropic mesophase and viscosity. The MCTPs were subject to considerable changes in chemical composition due to condensation and polymerization in the used-as-received coal-tar pitch after heat-treatment under different conditions. The MCTPs showed considerable increases in softening point, C/H ratio, and coke yield, compared to those of as-received coal-tar pitch. The MCTP formed by heat-treatment in nitrogen showed isotropic phases below $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h of soaking time. However, MCTP heat-treated under high pressure (350 mmHg) showed isotropic phases below $300^{\circ}C$, and showed anisotropic phases above $350^{\circ}C$, for 1 h of soaking time. The viscosity of the MCTPs increased with increase in their softening points.
This paper describes an acoustic analysis of a Jing, Korean percussion instrument, according to different drive point and blow strength, and this analysis is focused on the softening and beat phenomena. Three kinds of blow strength (very strong, strong, and weak) and three locations of drive point (center, up, and right) are applied, and the spectrogram function built in Matlab is utilized to analyzing the softening and beat of target sounds. The stronger blow you drive to the center of the Jing, the more clearly softening is observed. Frequency shifting is increased proportionally to the blow strength and frequency and it is stand out on the harmonics in contrast with that of other partials. Beat of the Jing can be classified into the early beat and late beat. The beats by the outside driven Jing are distributed in wider frequency band than the beats by the center driven Jing. In addition, it is observed that the early beat is affected by few specific partials developed around harmonics for the center driven Jing.
This paper deals with numerical modeling of dynamic failure phenomena in rate-sensitive brittle and/or ductile materials. To this end, a two-dimensional continuum viscodamage-embedded discontinuity model, which is based on our previous work (see Do et al. 2017), is developed. More specifically, the pre-peak nonlinear and rate-sensitive hardening response of the material behavior, representing the fracture-process zone creation, is described by a rate-dependent continuum damage model. Meanwhile, an embedded displacement discontinuity model is used to formulate the post-peak response, involving the macro-crack creation accompanied by exponential softening. The numerical implementation in the context of the finite element method exploiting the second-order mid-point scheme is discussed in detail. In order to show the performance of the model several numerical examples are included.

This study proposes a method to analyze the distribution of coal porosity disturbances after the excavation of ultra-large-diameter water jet boreholes using a coal wetting and softening model. The high-pressure jet is regarded as a short-term high-pressure water injection process. The water injection range is the coal softening range. The time when the reference point of the borehole wall is shocked by the high-pressure water column is equivalent to the time of high-pressure water injection of the coal wall. The influence of roadway excavation with support and borehole diameter on the ultra-large-diameter jet drilling excavation is also studied. The coal core around the borehole is used to measure the gas permeability for determining the porosity disturbance distribution of the coal in the sampling plane to verify the correctness of the simulation results. Results show that the excavation borehole is beneficial to the expansion of the roadway excavation disturbance, and the expansion distance of the roadway excavation disturbance has a quadratic relationship with the borehole diameter. Wetting and softening of the coal around the borehole wall will promote the uniform distribution of the overall porosity disturbance and reduce the amplitude of disturbance fluctuations.

In this study, the concrete fracture energy was obtained using the three point notched beam test method developed by Hillerborg et al. (Cem Concr Res 6(6):773-782, 1976). A total of 12 notched concrete beams were tested under two different loading conditions: constant stroke control and constant crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) control. Despite individual fracture energies obtained from the two different loading conditions showing some variation, the average fracture energy from both loading conditions was very similar. Furthermore, the results obtained support the idea that a far tail constant "A" could change the true fracture energy by up to 11 %, if it is calculated using CMOD instead of LVDT. The far tail constant "A" is determined using a least squares fit onto a straight line according to Elices et al. (Mater Struct 25(148):212-218, 1992) and RILEM report (2007). It was also observed that the selection of the end point can produce variations of the true fracture energy. The end point indicates the point in the experiment at which to stop. An end point of 2 mm has been recommended, however, in this study other end points were also considered. The final form of the bilinear softening curve was determined based on Elices and Guinea's methods (1992, 1994) and RILEM report (2007). This paper proposes a bilinear stress-crack opening displacement curve according to test results as well as the CEB-FIP model code.

Ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete is characterized with high tensile strength and ductility. This paper revealed the influence of fiber volume fraction on the tensile softening behaviour of ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete and developed tensile softening model to predict the deformation capacity by finite element method analysis with experimental results. The initial stiffness of ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete was constant irrespective of fiber volume fraction. The increase of fiber volume fraction improved the flexural tensile strength and caused more brittle softening behaviour. Finite element method analysis proposed by Uchida et al. was introduced to obtain the tensile softening curve from three point notched beam test results and we proposed the tensile softening model as a function of fiber volume fraction and critical crack width.
