Application of Gamma Ray Densitometry in Powder Metallurgy

  • The most important industrial application of gamma radiation in characterizing green compacts is the determination of the density. Examples are given where this method is applied in manufacturing technical components in powder metallurgy. The requirements imposed by modern quality management systems and operation by the workforce in industrial production are described. The accuracy of measurement achieved with this method is demonstrated and a comparison is given with other test methods to measure the density. The advantages and limitations of gamma ray densitometry are outlined. The gamma ray densitometer measures the attenuation of gamma radiation penetrating the test parts (Fig. 1). As the capability of compacts to absorb this type of radiation depends on their density, the attenuation of gamma radiation can serve as a measure of the density. The volume of the part being tested is defined by the size of the aperture screeniing out the radiation. It is a channel with the cross section of the aperture whose length is the height of the test part. The intensity of the radiation identified by the detector is the quantity used to determine the material density. Gamma ray densitometry can equally be performed on green compacts as well as on sintered components. Neither special preparation of test parts nor skilled personnel is required to perform the measurement; neither liquids nor other harmful substances are involved. When parts are exhibiting local density variations, which is normally the case in powder compaction, sectional densities can be determined in different parts of the sample without cutting it into pieces. The test is non-destructive, i.e. the parts can still be used after the measurement and do not have to be scrapped. The measurement is controlled by a special PC based software. All results are available for further processing by in-house quality documentation and supervision of measurements. Tool setting for multi-level components can be much improved by using this test method. When a densitometer is installed on the press shop floor, it can be operated by the tool setter himself. Then he can return to the press and immediately implement the corrections. Transfer of sample parts to the lab for density testing can be eliminated and results for the correction of tool settings are more readily available. This helps to reduce the time required for tool setting and clearly improves the productivity of powder presses. The range of materials where this method can be successfully applied covers almost the entire periodic system of the elements. It reaches from the light elements such as graphite via light metals (AI, Mg, Li, Ti) and their alloys, ceramics ($AI_20_3$, SiC, Si_3N_4, $Zr0_2$, ...), magnetic materials (hard and soft ferrites, AlNiCo, Nd-Fe-B, ...), metals including iron and alloy steels, Cu, Ni and Co based alloys to refractory and heavy metals (W, Mo, ...) as well as hardmetals. The gamma radiation required for the measurement is generated by radioactive sources which are produced by nuclear technology. These nuclear materials are safely encapsulated in stainless steel capsules so that no radioactive material can escape from the protective shielding container. The gamma ray densitometer is subject to the strict regulations for the use of radioactive materials. The radiation shield is so effective that there is no elevation of the natural radiation level outside the instrument. Personal dosimetry by the operating personnel is not required. Even in case of malfunction, loss of power and incorrect operation, the escape of gamma radiation from the instrument is positively prevented.

The Prospects of International Cities in China

  • Since 1980's there have been two trends that obviously developed in the would -- economics globalization and urban internationalization. China, with is reform and opening-up policy and rapid economic growth, keeps pace with these two trends. The term "International City" has no putative standard or definition. If we make an analogue of urban functional hierarchy in the world with a pyramid, the International Citiesa are the few elites on its top. The highest level international cities can be called "World City" or "Global City". In today's new international division of labor, they are diversified leading cities with control capacity on a world scale, like New York, London, and Tokyo. The secondary international cities are either diversified cities with influence and regulative functions on multinational scale or specialized cities on politics, economics, culture, or other aspects with worldwide impact. Judged by different criteria, there is no city that is qualified as International City with the exception of Hong Kong, which was returned to the P.R. of China in 1997. Nevertheless, Some favorable conditions for the development of the international city still exist in China. This country is already the sixth largest economic entity in the world, and the second largest economic entity in the world, and the second largest one if GNP estimated by ppp. Furthermore its import and export value make up for 40% of its GNP, indicating that China is repidly merging into global economy. In this 1, 2 billion-population country, the difference of economic levels between urban and rural, coastal and inland regions is so big that a few metropolises in the coastal region have the possibilities and potentials to develop into international cities regardless of rather low GNP per capita of the whole country. This article will focus on analysis from several perspectives, such as the proportion of foreign trade values in GDP, the proportion of imports and exports by foreign funded enterprises in total foreign trade value; distribution of the 500 largest foreign-funded enterprises; distribution of the 500 enterprises with largest import and export values; distrigbution of foreign computer and telecom companies with offices in China; the number of outward flights per week and the international tourists; the value of foreign capital used in cities and so on. From this analysis, it is predicted that Chinese international cities will surely emergy from the eastern coastal regions and they must be the core cities of metropolitan interlocking regions that have been formed or in the process of forming. Those international cities will arise from south to north in turn : Hong Kong-Guangzhu, Shanghai, Beijing-Tianjin, and perhaps the last one is Dalian-Shenyang. The other side of this issue is that there is a long way for the coming international cities in China except Hong Kong. At least China and these core cities must continually devote to (1) improve the regional composition of foreign capital sources. (2) improve the composition of export commodities. (3) improve the investment environment (including hard and soft environment) to attract more transnational corporations to settle. (4) deepen the reform of state-owned enterprises and establish Chinese own transnational corporations to enter the world market.ons to enter the world market.

Analysis of Forefoot Bending Angle in Sprint Spikes According to Bobsleigh Start Lap Time for Development of Korean-Specific Bobsledding Shoes

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze effects of the toe-spring angle of bobsleigh shoes on start speed lap time to develop Korean-specific bobsled shoes suitable for winter environments and for domestic players on the basis of sports science and optimized biomechanical performance. Method: Seven Korean bobsleigh athletes participated in this study, with three pairs of sprint spikes from three companies (Type A, Type B, Type C). To analyze sprint lap time and forefoot bending angle for each shoe, participants were instructed to drag a sled 15 meters from the start line at a maximum sprint. forefoot bending angle was collected by a high speed camera, and lap time speed was measured. Results: Lap time for type B shoes was $3.52{\pm}0.17sec$, type A was $3.55{\pm}0.19sec$, and type C was $3.56{\pm}0.18sec$. Forefoot bending angles were: angle 1, $6.88{\pm}5.55^{\circ}$; angle 2, $9.23{\pm}6.38^{\circ}$; angle 3, $15.56{\pm}5.39^{\circ}$; angle 4, $9.54{\pm}3.85^{\circ}$; angle 5, $9.22{\pm}5.08^{\circ}$; angle 6, $7.66{\pm}6.44^{\circ}$; and angle 7, $4.30{\pm}6.24^{\circ}$ (p<.001). Forefoot bending in angle 3 was as follows: type A, $16.47{\pm}6.01^{\circ}$; type B, $14.30{\pm}4.96^{\circ}$; and type C, $15.90{\pm}5.17^{\circ}$. Conclusion: Hard outsoles and midsoles are better than soft type for reduced start lap time when developing a prototype Korean bobsled shoe.

  • ABA형태의 삼중블록공중합체는 고무상과 유리상의 상대적 성분에 좌우되는 열가소성 탄성체와 강화 플라스틱으로써 유용하다. 이러한 물질은 다른 고분자와 혼합하여 첨가제, 강화제, 상용화제로써 기능성을 줄 수 있다. 상업적으로 유용한 대부분의 블록 공중합체는 석유로부터 유래된다. 지구상의 유한한 화석자원 공급과 석유 사용 및 채굴에 관련된 경제, 환경적 비용을 고려하면 그 대안은 매력적이다. 이러한 흐름에 더하여 미래 지속 가능한 물질의 최종 용도를 위한 설계 및 그 실행이 요구되고 있다. 본 총설에서는 재생 가능한 ABA 형태의 삼중블록 공중합체 합성과 특성을 살펴보고, 특히 공중합체의 경성부분을 위한 높은 유리 전이온도 혹은 녹는점을 지닌 식물 유래 폴리올레핀과 다당류 유래 폴리락타이드와 공중합체의 연성부분을 위한 바이오 기반, 낮은 유리 전이온도, 무결정의 탄화수소계 고분자에 대해 논의하려고 한다. 이를 위해서 다양하게 제어된 고분자 중합법은 강력한 도구임이 증명되고 있다. 이러한 혼성 고분자의 정교한 합성에 관한 연구는 재생가능성, 생분해성, 고성능을 지닌 새로운 탄성체와 강화 플라스틱의 발전을 이끌고 있다.

마성분지(麻城盆地)의 지형생성작용(地形生成作用) (Geomorphic Processes of Masung Basin)

  • 경상북도 문경시 마성면 일대에는 고생대의 퇴적암과 변성암 산지로 둘러싸인 석회암 분지가 형성되어 있다. 이 논문에서는 마성분지의 주변에 분포하는 완만한 구릉지의 지형생성작용을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 구릉지에 피복된 퇴적층을 분석하였으며, 구릉지의 종단면에서 거리와 고도 사이의 관계를 검토하였고, 구릉지와 지질과의 상관관계를 고찰하였다. 본 논문에서 밝혀진 마성분지의 지형생성작용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 퇴적층은 구릉지의 말단부로 갈수록 두께가 증가한다. 퇴적층내 대부분의 역은 석회암질이며, 배후산지와 구릉지의 접경부에서 침식된 물질이다. 퇴적층은 분급은 양호하나 imbrication이 불량하다. 둘째, 분지 주변의 구릉지(해발고도 $160{\sim}230m$)는 '유로(流路)를 갖는 유수(流水)'의 작용으로 형성되었다. 지속적인 유수의 작용으로, 경암과 연암이 접하는 경계 부분에서는 상대적으로 약한 석회암이 신선한 기반암까지 침식되어 경사급변점이 나타났다. 셋째, 구릉지 형성 이후 배후산지가 협곡으로 개석되면서 생산된 boulder들이 구릉지의 퇴적층을 피복하였다. 결론적으로 마성분지의 지형생성작용은 화강암 분지의 생성작용으로 제시되었던 '암석의 연경차에 따른 차별침식'과 궤를 같이 하고 있으나, '포상류에 의한 풍화물질의 제거'와는 상이한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

소맥(小麥) 품질특성(品質特性)의 유전(遺傳) 및 환경적(環境的) 변이(變異) (Effect of Genetic-Environmental Interaction on Quality of Wheat)

  • 우리나라에 있어서 소맥품질특성(小麥品質特性)의 유전(遺傳) 및 환경적(環境的) 변이(變異)를 구명(究明)하기 위하여 경(硬), 연질(軟質) 소맥(小麥) 7품종(品種)을 전국 9개 지역(地域)에 공시(供試)하여 그 관계를 2년에 걸쳐 검토하였다. Eberhart와 Russell의 통계적(統計的) 평가방법(平價方法)에 따라 회귀계수(回歸係數)는 적응성(適應性)의 척도(尺度)로 결정계수(決定係數)는 안정성(安全性)의 척도(尺度)로 이용하였다. 아울러 각 품질특성(品質特性)의 표현형(表現型) 및 환경상관(環境相關)을 추정하였다. 제분율(製粉率)은 품종(品種)의 유전적(遺傳的) 특성(特性)에는 차이가 있었으나 환경변화(環境變化)와는 무관하였으며, 단백질함량(蛋白質含量)은 결정계수(決定係數)가 $0.689{\sim}0.960$으로 환경변화(環境變化)에 따라 일정하게 변화되었다. Pelshenke 값과 침전가(沈澱價)의 환경변화(環境變化)의 영향은 경질품종(硬質品種)이 연질품종(軟質品種)보다 컸다. 단백질함량(蛋白質含量) 침전가(沈澱價), Pelshenke값 및 빵비용적(比容積)간에는 표현형(表現型) 및 유전형상관(遺傳型相關)에서 높은 정(正)의 상관(相關)이 있었으며, 비교적 높은 유전력(遺傳力)이 침전가(沈澱價)($h^2=0.747)$), 단백질함량(蛋白質含量)($h^2=0.577$ 및 빵비용적(比容積)($h^2=0.551$에서 인정되었다.

미국의 해안관리 -New Jerseyization의 반성과 연방정부 연안역관리 프로그램의 확산- (Coastal Zone Management in the United States of America)

  • 해안은 다양한 지형 프로세스와 역사, 문화가 어우러져 지역에 따라 독특한 문화경관을 나타내고 있다. 미국 동부 해안을 따라 발달된 사주 섬은 문화경관의 지역적 차이를 잘 보여주고 있다. 사주 섬의 토지이용을 살펴보면, 1970년대 초에 조지아에서 5%, 노스캐롤라이나에서 14%, 그리고 뉴저지에서 47%가 도시적으로 이용되었다. 19세기 중반부터 개발되기 시작한 뉴저지의 해안지역에서는 성장억제책이 부족했고, 입법 활동에서 미래 해안환경에 대한 통찰력을 결여했기 때문에 많은 지역에서 자연 해빈이 대부분 사라지는 뉴저지제이션 현상이 발생했다. 노스캐롤라이나는 해안관리와 입법과정에서 탁월한 지혜를 보여 해안의 자연성을 회복해나가고 있다. 조지아 해안은 남북전쟁 이후 독특한 토지이용으로 자연성을 회복하였고, 1970년 이후 대부분의 사주 섬이 학술기관이나 환경보호 관련 기관의 관리로 이전되어 16개 가운데 9개의 사주 섬은 야생상태를 유지하고 있다.

치은의 biotype이 결합조직이식 후 치근피개도에 미치는 영향 (Influence of gingival biotype on the amount of root coverage following the connective tissue graft)

  • Purpose: The integrity of interproximal hard/soft tissue has been widely accepted as the key determinant for success or degree of root coverage following the connective tissue graft. However, we reason that the gingival biotype of an individual, defined as the distance from the interproximal papilla to gingiva margin, may be the key determinant that influence the extent of root coverage regardless of traditional classification of gingival recession. Hence, the present study was performed with an aim to verify that individual gingival scalloping pattern inherent from biotype influence the level of gingival margin following the connective tissue graft for root coverage. Methods: Test group consisted of 43 single-rooted teeth from 21 patients (5 male and 16 female patients, mean age: 36.6 years) with varying degrees of gingival recession requiring connective tissue graft; 20 teeth of Miller class I and 23 teeth of Miller class III gingival recession, respectively. The control group consisted of contralateral teeth which did not demonstrate apparent gingival recession, and thus not requiring root coverage. For a biotype determination, an imaginary line connecting two adjacent papillae of a test tooth was drawn. The distance from this line to gingival margin at mid-buccal point and this distance (P-M distance) was designated as "gingival biotype" for a given individual. The distance was measured at baseline and 3 to 6 months examinations postoperatively both in test and control groups. The differences in the distance between Miller class I and III were subject to statistical analysis by using Student.s t-test while those between the test and control groups within a given patient were by using paired t-test. Results: The P-M distance at 3 to 6 months postoperatively was not significantly different between Miller class I and Miller class III. It was not significantly different between the test and control group in a given patient, either, both in Miller class I and III. Conclusions: The amount of root coverage following the connective tissue graft was not dependent on Miller's classification, but rather was dependent on P-M distance, strongly implying that the gingival biotype of a given patient may play a critical impact on the level of gingival margin following connective tissue graft.

잔대 종자(種子) 발육(發育) 및 발아(發芽) 특성(特性) (Studies on the Seed Development and Germination of Adenophora triphylla DC)

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 잔대(沙蔘) 종자(種子)의 특성(特性)을 조사(調査)하고 아울러 1993년에 채종(採種)한 종자(種子)를 재료(材料)로 하여 저온습윤(低溫濕潤), 고온(高溫) 및 Gibberellin 처리(處理)를 한 후 발아기간중(發芽期間中)의 명(明) 암조건(暗條件)과 발아온도(發芽溫度)을 구명(究明)하여 잔대종자(種字)의 발아율(發芽率) 향상(向上)을 위한 기초자료(基礎資料)를 활용코자 수행(遂行)한 결과(結果)를 요약(要約)하면 다음과 같다. 1. 종자(種子)의 종피(種皮)는 개화후(開花後) 30일에는 하얀색으로, 누르면 물렁거리는 상태(狀態)이었으나 40일경 부터는 종자(種子)가 갈색(褐色)을 띠면서 딱딱하였다. 2. 종자(種子)의 1,000입중(粒重)은 개화후(開花後) 40일에는 247mg이었으나 개화후(開花後) 50일에는 268mg으로 최대치에 달했으며 개화후(開花後) 60일에는 감소(減少)하는 경향(傾向)이었다. 3. 종자(種子) 발아율(發芽率)은 무처리(無處理) 40%에 비(比)하여 $0^{\circ}C$의 저온(低溫)에 7일간 습윤처리(濕潤處理)하였을때 88.3%, Gibberellin 100ppm 24시간 침윤처리(浸潤處理)하였을때 96.7%로 발아가 가장 양호(良好)하였다. 4. 잔대 종자(種子)는 암조건(暗條件)에서는 전혀 발아(發芽)되지 않고 명조건(明條件)에서 발아(發芽)가 잘 되었으나 Gibberellin 100ppm에 침지처리(浸漬處理)하면 암조건(暗條件)에서도 80% 발아(發芽)되었다. 5. 잔대 발아온도(發芽溫度)은 $25^{\circ}C$ 내외(內外)이었다.

  • 저자는 매복된 상악 정중 과잉치를 주소로 내원한 환아를 3차원 전산화 단층촬영술을 이용해 매복된 과잉치의 위치를 파악하였으며 다음의 결론을 얻었다. 1. 인접한 영구치에 대한 위해한 영향을 주지 않기 위해 상악 정중 매복 과잉치의 정확한 위치 판별이 요구된다. 2. 3차원 전산화 단층촬영법은 매복 과잉치의 위치판별에 있어서 객관적인 중요한 정보를 제공한다.
