  • The purpose of this study is to get related appropriate data for correct awareness and education of the university students who are using contact lens by investigating university students' awareness, present status, using habits and complication of contact lens. The method of survey was made by questionnaires which were spread to the group of 408 university students. The result indicated some characteristics including using daily wear soft lens of 55.7%, the major motive of using them is for cosmetics of 45.6%. Among them, 54.9% experienced complication, and the xerophthalmia was the most conspicuous case in the aspect of the kinds of the complication. In the aspect of the place where they purchased the contact lens, 93% of the users bought them at eye glasses stores. But when they experienced inconveniences of the contact lens, only 18.8% consulted the Stores. In the fact, I think, the users don't seem to trust the stores fully. Furthermore, 43.5% endure the inconveniences when they get them without any treatment. The fact indicates that they don't realize the seriousness of the complication due to contact lens. Reviewing above-stated facts, information and education for correct awareness and managing methods of contact lens, the complication seem 10 be required. In addition, optician specialized knowledge on contact lens and the sense of duty on national eye health improvement seem to be required.

  • We investigated the change of the blink rate by wearing soft contact lens(SCL). Eight types of soft contact lenses were worn by twelve asymptomatic contact lens wearers. When wearers were worn SCLs for 15 min, the average blink rate was 20.0 blinks/min, which was a statistically significant increase compared to 13.3 blinks/min, the average blink rate of non-SCL-worn eye. After 8 hr of lens wear, the average blink rate was 24.3 blinks/min, and it was 11 blinks/min more than that of non-SCL-worn eye and 4 blinks/min more than that of 15 min SCL-worn eye. There were a little difference of the blink rate in types of lens, which the blink rate range of all lens after 15 min of lens wear was 18.1~20.9 blinks/min and that after 8 hr of lens wear was 22.9~24.9 blinks/min. When wearing A lens(vifilcon, 0.06 mm) having thin center thickness, wearers showing difference of 10.0~11.9 blinks/min between non-SCL-worn eye and 15 min SCL-worn eye reached 16.7% and it was more than that of relatively thick B lens(0.17 mm) and C lens(0.14 mm). This result suggest that the center thickness was not unique factor of the blink rate change and other factors would have synthetically influence on the blink rate change. In the case of B lens and C lens of hilafilcon material but having different center thickness and water content, wearers increasing more than 4.0 blinks/min after 8 hr of lens wear was 58.3% and 41.7%, respectively. This result have provided information that the lenses of similar materials but different center thickness and water content could cause individually the different change of the blink rate.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate changes in the thickness of cornea, curvature of cornea, and aberration depending on the water contents, materials, and refractive power of contact lens. Methods: The differences in the corneal thickness between pre- and post-wearing the lenses were compared using 5 kinds of lenses. The changes in the corneal thickness, the curvatures of the anterior and posterior cornea, and high order aberration (HOA) before and after wearing the lenses were investigated at the center of the cornea, and the different distance and the direction away from the center of the cornea. For the equipments of measurement, ORB ScanII (Bausch & Lomb Inc, ver 3.14) was used to measure the corneal topography and thickness, and Zywave (Bausch & Lomb Inc, ver 5.20) was used to analyze the high order aberration. Results: Five (S1, S2, S3, T1, T2) of the lens was used for this study, excluding the lens T2 lens has four lenses and the thickness of the corneal shape, but the impact is minimal. In the case of the hydrogel soft contact lenses (T2 lens) with low oxygen permeability, the corneal thickness showed distinct increasing patterns. The high order aberration and coma aberration were most changed in the silicon hydrogel toric lens, while the depth of anterior was most changed in the hydrogel toric lens. Conclusion: Among the 5 kinds of contact lenses with different water contents, materials, and refractive power used for this study, the corneal shape change was small for the lenses with an oxygen permeability (Dk) of more than 28, and the largest for the lenses with a very low oxygen permeability.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform a clinical test using ez NANOsence II RGP contact lenses for the effects of visual acuity and cornea on subjects with abnormal refraction status. One hundred twenty one adults (twenty nine males, ninety two females, range = 17 to 43, mean = 22.86) were recorded. The subject's history including, the symptoms from previous lens wear, were studied. The subjects were observed, both pre and post lens wear, for any symptoms and signs of change of the eye. The Visual acuity and the binocular status were tested at the far distance using the contact lens. The refraction test was performed on the naked eye using the objective method (Topcon KR-8100, Japan). The Stereopsis test was performed at the near distance after contact lens wear by the Titmus fly (Stereo Optical Co., U.S.A) and TNO (TECH, The netherlands). The contrast sensitivity diagnosis was performed at 1m distance after contact lens wear by the contrast sensitivity chart (pelli-Robertson, USA). The corneal topography was analyzed on the naked eye after lens wear by ORB scan (Bausch Lomb, U.S.A.). The ultra structure of surface on the contact lens was observed using SEM (JMS-5800, Japan). The chemical component's of the contact lens was analyzed by EDS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The longer of contact lens wear period, The subjects have acquired the most improved visual function. 2. Subjects had experienced few side effects wearing the contact lenses. 3. The lenses were easy to use by the subjects. 4. The longer of contact lens wear period, the power of cornea had more decrease. but the base curve of cornea had more increase and corneal astigmatism was decrease (p<0.01). Also, the thickness of corneal center was few decrease. 5. Longer periods of using the contact lens showed stereopsis and contrast sensitivity at more normal values. 6 The corneal topographical after lens wear showed most subjects with similar morphology for different wear periods. 7. The surface ultrastructure of the new and used contact lens was the similar fine shape. 8. The chemical component's of in the new and used contact appeared to have similar results. In conclusion, this study showed that the surface ultrastructure and chemical component's of the new and used contact lens are similar. In addition, the subjects had improved the quality of vision and few experienced any side effects during long periods of contact lens wear. Also they have decrease of corneal astigmatism during the long period of lens wear. Our test has showed that the chemical composition and fine structure of contact lens have related to the visual function on contact lens wearer. In this paper, we suggested that ez NANOsence II RGP contact lenses had a moderate effect for correcting vision of abnormal refraction eye.

  • To investigate the momentary movement pattern of soft contact lens(SCL) depending on wearing time, eight types of soft contact lenses were worn by 10 normal subjects and the momentary movements of SCLs were estimated using by high speed camera(FASTCAM ultima 1024). When the momentary movements of SCLs in the cornea between blinkings were compared after 15 min wearing, the vertical movements of all eight SCLs were about 2 times larger than the horizontal movement but the extent of these movement difference was a function of kinds of SCLs. The momentary moving distance of SCL varied from the kinds of SCLs, which A and B lens, daily wear lens, moved significantly larger distance compared with other SCLs. The momentary movements between blinkings decreased significantly after 8hr wear of SCLs. The extents were different when SCLs were compared with each other, which the reduction range of horizontal and vertical movement was 24.6~60.0% and 20.4~94.3%, respectively. The A, B and C lenses which had relatively higher water content showed the larger movement reduction after SCL wear. This results suggest that wearing SCL for some hours decreases the movement of SCl, which can induce the change of tear flow.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the changes of refractive power when worn soft contact lenses were temporarily removed. Methods: 91 soft contact lens wearers (15 males and 76 females; total 182 eyes) from 17 to 39 years of age (average: $24{\pm}4.8$ years) were participated. Objective and subjective refraction, and corneal radius were measured at 0, 30, 60 and 90 min after lens removal. The changes in refractive power were evaluated between measurements over time. The other parameters such as types of lenses, fitting and wearing conditions were also assessed. Results: Objective refraction, subjective refraction and corneal radius were significantly changed according to measured time (p<0.0001). A moderate myopic shifts was observed at the beginning (30 min after lens removal) and a slight myopic shift at the late of measurement (60 min to 90 min after lens removal). There are no significant differences between lens types, fitting states, wearing time, wearing days and sleeping time in the previous day. However, there was significant interaction in changes for corneal radius between measuring time and lens type (p=0.017), fitting state (p=0.019), and sleeping time prior to the test (p=0.010). Conclusions: Time to reach refractive and corneal radius stability after contact lens removal revealed at least more than 60 min, regardless of types of lenses, fitting and wearing conditions. Therefore, refraction for correction should be performed after waiting for more than that time as possible.

  • Silicone hydrogel contact lenses developed as a continuous-wear modality are now used as a daily-wear contact lenses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical performance in a group of successful long-term wearers of conventional hydrogel contact lenses when refitted with daily wear $O_2OPTIX$ silicone hydrogel lenses. Sixty-two wearers ($30.7{\pm}19.9$ months of prior lens wear) among sixty-five soft lens wearers refitted with $O_2OPTIX$ silicone hydrogel lenses were participated in this study finally. Subjective symptoms were scored and objective signs were graded using CCLRU scales during the study period. 98% of subjects were successfully refitted with the one base curve of $O_2OPTIX$, and 33.9% of subjects were needed more or less lens powers compared with their habitual lenses. Subjects reported a concurrent reduction in dryness, redness and tiredness compared with their habitual lenses and both subjective and objective evaluations showed that dryness, tiredness, itchiness, bulbar and limbal hyperemia were decreased and significantly decreased particularly for those subjects with greater baseline symptoms (p<0.0001). But corneal staining was increased and was seen in many subjects during the study (p<0.0001). Refitting existing soft contact lens wearers with silicone hydrogel contact lens could result in a decreased in dryness, redness and tiredness, particularly more effective for those subjects with greater baseline of those symptoms. When patients using conventional hydrogel materials switch to a silicone hydrogel material, the potential for increased corneal staining should be considered and over-refraction should be needed to give a best vision.
