  • The change of interactions of anionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and sodium tetradecyl sulfate(575) in the presence of electrolytes, to the chitosan-based polyelectrolyte(sol'n and gel phase) were studied. The chitosan gel used in this study were crosslinked with epichlorohydrin(ECH). Binding isotherms were determined by potentiometric technique using a surfactant ion selective solid-state electrode and the results were represented by using the sequence generating function(SGF) method. The results of binding isotherm were shown comparatively high cooperativity. The addition of electrolytes in the chitosan/SDS system resulted in a shift of the binding to higher free surfactant concentration because of screen effect by the electrolytes. Degree of binding of chitosan gel was higher than that of chitosan sol'n. And also a conformational phase transition of the chitosan gel in the presence of electrolytes has been investigated.

  • The surface tension of PO added sodium poly(oxyethylene(EO), oxyisopropylene(PO)) dodecyl ether sulfate firstly were slightly lower than EO added sulfate in the concentration range of $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-3}mol/{\ell}$. And they had lower critical micelle concentration ($10^{-4}{\sim}9{\times}10^{-5}mol/{\ell}$) than general anionic surfactants. The adsorptivity ($2.2{\times}10^{-10}mol/cm^2$) of sodium $(PO)_{10}(EO)_5$ dodecyl ether(compound of PO addition firstly) calculated by Gibbs' adsorption isotherm were higher than that of sodium $(EO)_{10}(PO)_5$, dodecyl ether(compound of EO addition firstly), but were lower than that of sodium dodecyl sulfate (${\Gamma}=3.2{\times}10^{-10}mol/cm^2$). These could be understood that the adsorption areas of compounds were very large because of their high molecular weight. Moreover, PO compounds showed better properties than EO compounds in foamability, emulsifying power for organics (n-hexane, benzene), detergency for the lard, tallow oil mixture and dispersability for iron oxide. It was interpreted in terms of surface properties of the PO compounds. These showed that the interfacial activity become higher when hydrophilic and hydrophobic portion existed in aggoromerated state respectively. The test results of emulsifying power for organics (n-hexane, benzene) showed better for benzene than n-hexane. Eight kinds of sodium (EO, PO) dodecyl ether derivatives showed irregular dispersibilities for polar iron oxide in water dispersed media.

  • The solution properties of sodium n-dodecyl sulfate, as an anionic surfactant in the presence of a cationic watersoluble 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis (N-methylpyridinium-4-yl) porphyrin (TMPyP) has been comprehensively studied by means of conductometry, UV-vis and resonance light scattering (RLS) spectroscopies. The results represent the decreasing of critical micelle concentration of SDS solution due to increasing of TMPyP concentration. The stabilization of SDS micelle is due to neutralization of negative charge at the micelle surface. The presence of three different species of TMPyP in SDS solution has been unequivocally demonstrated: free porphyrin monomers, porphyrin monomers or aggregates bound to the micelles, and nonmicellar porphyrin/surfactant aggregates. Our results show SDS induced an aggregation in TMPyP. In fact two kinds of J-aggregations were observed: one of them for porphyrin monomers or aggregates bound to the micelles and the other for nonmicellar porphyrin/surfactant aggregates. However, the results represent the electrostatic interaction of TMPyP with SDS anion below the cmc.

  • Magnetite nanoparticles ($Fe_3O_4$ NPs) were synthesized by co-precipitating method under optimized condition. The $Fe_3O_4$ NPs coated with sodium dodecyl sulfate-thenoyltrifluoroacetone ($Fe_3O_4$ NPs-SDS-TTFA) were then exerted as the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for the extraction process prior to introducing to a flame atomic adsorption spectrometry (FAAS). The synthesized $Fe_3O_4$ NPs-SDS-TTFA were applied for the extraction of Pb(II) ions from different water samples. The characterization studies of nanoparticles were performed via scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive micro-analysis (SEM-EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques. The substantial parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were surveyed and optimized. A dynamic linear range (DLR) of $10-400{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ was obtained and the limit of detection (LOD, n=7) and relative standard deviation (RSD%, n= 6, $C=20{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) were found to be $2.3{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and 1.9%, respectively. According to the results, the proposed method successfully applied for the extraction of Pb(II) ions from different environmental water samples and satisfactory results achieved.

  • The effect of pH and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelle on the quenching of Ru(bpy)32+ luminescence by N-alkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium ions (RBPY+: R=methyl, octyl, dodecyl, benzyl) were investigated. In the absence of SDS, the quenching rate at pH 2 is similar to that of the corresponding methylalkyl viologens and much greater than that in pH 8 solution due to greater reducibility of the protonated form of RBPY+ (HRBPY2+). The quenching rate at pH 2 is strongly enhanced by the presence of SDS, while that at basic pH is greatly retarded. These observations are explained by deep embedment of RBPY+ into the hydrophobic hydrocarbon region of the micelle, whereas Ru(bpy)32+ and HRBPY2+ locate in the Stern layer of the micelle.

  • The cmc's of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/Triton X-100 surfactant mixtures were determined by surface tension measurement at various surfactant compositions. The cmc values were lower than those predicted from ideal mixture. The regular solution theory was applied to calculate the interaction parameter, micellar composition, and the activity coefficients of surfactants in the mixed micelle. The interaction parameter (${\beta}$) was - 2.1. The nonideality arised largely from decreased activity of SDS in the mixed micelle. The mean aggregation numbers (${\bar{n}}$) and micropolarity of hydrocarbon region of the mixed micelles were determined by luminescence probe techniques. The total aggregation number (${\bar{n}}_{SDS}+{\bar{n}}_{TX}$) in mixed micelles showed little dependency on the composition of the micelle. The apparent dielectric constant of the hydrocarbon region of the micelle vs micellar composition plot showed positive deviation from linearity. Emission and emission quenching of excited tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(Ⅱ) cation, $(Ru(bpy)_3^{2+})$, by methylviologen ($MV^{2+}$) were also investigated in the mixed micellar solutions. The quenching rate was lowest when the mole fraction of SDS in the surfactant mixtures (${\alpha}_{SDS}$) is about 0.25 and highest at ${\alpha}_{SDS}$ = 0.85. This was explained in terms of combined effects of binding of the cations with the micelle and mobility of the bound cations on the surface of the micelles.

  • A spectrofluorimetric methods has been developed for the determination of carbaryl in an aqueous solution. The effects of excitation wavelength, concentration of surfactant, concentration of ethanol as cosurfactant and emission wavelength on the fluorescence intensity were investigated to find the optimum experimental conditions to determine carbaryl. The emission intensity of the carbayl was increased with addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant. The emission intensity of the carbaryl was further increased with addition of ethanol as a co-surfactant. The optimum conditions were 281 nm for excitation wavelength, $1.0{\times}10^{-2}mol/L$ SDS, 20% (v/v) ethanol and 349 nm for emission wavelength. Under the optimum conditions, the emission intensity increased with the carbaryl concentration in the range of $5{\times}10^{-7}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ with a detection limit ($3{\sigma}$) of $1.1{\times}10^{-8}mol/L$. The resulting correlation coefficient of the working curve was 0.9996.

  • The leukocyte NADPH oxidase of neutrophils is a membrane-bound enzyme that catalyzes the production of $O_2^-$ from oxygen using NADPH as an electron donor. Dormant in resting neutrophils, the enzyme acquires catalytic activity when the cells are exposed to appropriate stimuli. During activation, the cytosolic oxidase components $p47^{phox}$ and $p67^{phox}$ migrate to the plasma membrane, where they associate with cytochrome $b_{558}$, a membrane-bound flavohemoprotein, to assemble the active oxidase. The oxidase can be activated in a cell-free system; the activating agent usually employed is an anionic amphiphile such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Because $p47^{phox}$ can translocate by itself during activation, the conformational change in $p47^{phox}$ may be responsible for the activation of NADPH oxidase. We show here that the treatment of $p47^{phox}$ with SDS leads to an increase in the reactivity of the sutbydryl group of cysteines toward N-ethylmaleimide, indicating that the conformational change occurs when $p47^{phox}$ is exposed to SDS. We propose that this change in conformation results in the appearance of a binding site through which $p47^{phox}$ interacts with cytochrome $b_{558}$during the activation process.
