In order to Develop a low Na functional kimchi using sea tangle, the Na-binding capacity of alginate in sea tangle along with other dietary fibers was evaluated in vitro. The adding type and amount of the sea tangle that contains alginate in kimhi and characteristics of the sea tangle added kimchi were also studied. Na-binding capacity of various dietary fibers such as cellulose, pectin, gun gum, carageenan, alginates (sodium alginate, alginate, alginate from sea tangle) was measured by equilibrium dialysis method in pH 2 and pH 7 in vitro. Gua gum, carageenan and a group of alginates effectively bound to Na+ Espacially sodium alginate showed high Na-binding capacity of 29.2% in pH of stomach (pH 2.0) and 33.8% in pH of small intestine (pH 7.0), however, the alginate extracted from sea tangle could not bind Na in PH of stomach (pH 2.0), but 27.4% in pH of small intestine (pH 7.0) condition. The content of alginate in sea tangles (dried sea tangle, salted sea tangle and washed salted sea tangle) was 19.8 ~ 22.2% on dry matter basis. The sea tangle added kimchi was prepared with the addition of the flake type (0.5$\times$3 cm) of sea tangle with a quantity of 30% in kimchi from the data of the sensory analysis. The addition of the sea tangle to the kimchi increased the content of soluble dietary fiber, suggesting the Na-binding capacity increased. The sea tangle added kimchi (SK) and sea tangle and fermented anchovy added kimchi (SAK) showed higher levels of reducing sugar and acidity than the control kimchi (CK). In quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) SK and SAK showed higher score in overall acceptance, and lower score in acidic order than CK, however, SK showed less moldy taste and more fresh acidic taste than SAK.

This study was aimed to screen bacteria of high alginate-degrading activity, to select the nitrogen source and concentration of NaCl and sodium alginate for the production of alginate-degrading enzyme, and to determine reaction conditions of enzyme. A novel alginate-degrading bacterium was isolated from abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) and named Methylobacterium sp. HJM27 by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The optimum culture conditions for the production of alginate-degrading enzyme were 1.0% sodium alginate, 0.5% peptone, 0.3% yeast extract, 1.5% NaCl, $25^{\circ}C$ and 48 hours incubation time. The raw enzyme showed the highest activity at $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 9, and produced 1.217 g - reducing sugar per liter in 0.8% (w/v) sodium alginate for 30 minutes. Methylobacterium sp. HJM27 and its alginate-degrading enzyme would be useful for the production of bioenergy and biofunctional oligosaccharides from seaweed.

PURPOSE. To evaluate the efficacy of sodium hypochlorite (1 : 10) and iodophor disinfectants on alginate impressions along with their effect on the survived bacterium count on the gypsum cast. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four alginate impression on each dentate patients were made, of which Group I were not washed or disinfected, Group II impressions were merely washed with water, Group III were disinfected by spraying with sodium hypochlorite (1 : 10), Group IV were disinfected with iodophor (1 : 213). Gypsum cast (type III) were made from all the impression. Impressions and gypsum cast were swabbed in mid palatal region for bacterial culture. Bacterial colony counting done after 3 days of incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ in blood agar media. The data obtained was analyzed by one way ANOVA test at a significant difference level of 0.05. RESULTS. Group I and Group II showed significantly more bacteria compared to Group III and Group IV. Bacterial colonies on the alginate impression and gypsum cast in group disinfected with Sodium hypochlorite (1 : 10) were 0.18, 0.82 respectively compared to group treated with iodophor (1 : 213). There was an increase in bacterial count on dental cast compared to source alginate impressions. CONCLUSION. Sodium hypochlorite (1 : 10) was found to be better disinfectant for alginate impression. There was an indication of increase in number of bacteria from alginate impression to making of dental cast. Additional gypsum cast disinfectant procedures need to be encouraged to completely eliminate cross infection to dental laboratory.

Bacillus polyfermenticus SCD was studied for its increasing stability by encapsulation, using 2, 3, and 4% sodium alginate. In these cases, 3% alginate resulted in the maximum survival of B. polyfermenticus SCD in artificial gastric juice for 3 h. Effects of several biopolymers on the encapsulated B. polyfermenticus SCD by 3% sodium alginate were investigated. Encapsulation with 0.5% methylcellulose showed the highest survival rate for 3 h in artificial gastric juice. Therefore, the optimized encapsulation material was 3% alginate with 0.5% methylcellulose. Furthermore, the survival of encapsulated B. polyfermenticus SCD was shown to be 122%, when 1% bile salt was added. Freeze-dried encapsulation resulted in lower survival than with non-dried encapsulation. Therefore, encapsulation was the most effective when 3% sodium alginate was used with 0.5% methylcellulose, but without freeze-drying.
To obtain the basic data for protective roles and first-aid of radiation hazard, the present studies were carried out to evaluate the decontamination of radiostrontium by the First-Aid drugs. Each mouse was administered intraperitoneally dose of sodium alginate 5mg, $CaNa_3DTPA$ 8.4mg and saline 5ml following the internal contamination with 1 $\mu$Ci of strontium as $^{85}SrCl_2$. $^{85}Sr$ was determined by the radioactivity of body burden, urinary excretion, fecal excretion and organ distribution by Ge-detector and MCA. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Effective half life on whole body retention $^{85}Sr$ was determined at 33 hours. 2. The decontamination effect of First-Aid durgs on the body $^{85}Sr$ burden were increased $CaNa_3DTPA$ (4.7 times), sodium alginate (1.7 times) and saline (2.4 times) respectively. 3. Strontium were excreted through urine (35.4%), feces (64.4%) and other (0.2%). But on the $^{85}Sr$ excretion routes following First-Aid drugs treatment, strontium-85 mainly were excreted through urine after $CaNa_3DTPA$ and saline treatment, and was excreted through feces after sodium alginate treatment. 4. The organ distribution of strontium-85 is vertebra, femur, sternum and liver in order Finally, the extrapolations from these data to victims were suggested that the rapid administration of $CaNa_3DTPA$, sodium alginate and saline simultaneously were markedly increased the decontamination effects on the internal contamination of radiostrontium.

The research was purposed production of oligosaccharide from alginate hydrolysis the main composition in cell walls of sea weed. We was isolated 252 strains from sea water and mud flat, the highest alginate lyase activity was selected, and identified as Sanguibacter keddieii NC9 by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. In this study was select the sodium alginate concentration, pH, temperature for the production of alginate lyase activity. Alginate lyase activity was confirmed from plate assay with 10% cetylpyridinium chloride. The optimum culture conditions for the production of alginate lyase were sodium alginate 10 g/L, peptone 5 g/L, $40^{\circ}C$, pH 9 and 36 hours incubation time. Sanguibacter keddieii NC9, its alginate lyase would be useful for the production of bioenergy and biofunctional oligosaccharides from sea weed.
In this study, The mixture of three kinds of pre-treatment agents, Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt(CMC), Sodium alginate and Dextrin, have been prepared for the better coloration of digital textile printing. To get sharpness of outline during digital printing process, the optimal formulation is the CMC and Sodium alginate mixture 1:1 ratio by volume. Cyan, Yellow, and Black colours are excellent on the Sodium alginate mixtures. But, Magenta is excellent in the CMC and Dextrin mixture. Sharpness and printability are closely related to viscosity of the mixture. The most optimal sharpness of outline achieved with a consideration of coloring, and field operations account for production when the viscosity of the mixed pre-treatment agent approximately is 10~13 cSt. Change in shade and staining of wash fastness for all the treated samples with the mixtures rated 4-5 grade. Both dry rubbing fastness to shade change and staining are good in the treated samples, whereas wet rubbing fastness rated 2-3 grade. To improve wet rubbing fastness, the Sodium alginate and Dextrine mixture, which rated 3-4 grade for Black color, is applicable. With exception of 3 rating to black color, Light fastness is 4 rating for the remaining three colors in the regardless of treatment condition and mixing of the pre-treatment agent. Dry cleaning fastness of all samples are also 4-5 rating.

High molecular weight sodium alginate (HMWSA)/low molecular weight sodium alginate (LMWSA) microcapsules containing phytoncide oil were prepared with different LMWSA contents. The effects of the stirring rate and ratio of HMWSA/LMWSA on the diameter and morphology of the phytoncide/alginate beads were investigated by optical microscopy and the release behaviors of phytoncide oil from the phytoncide/alginate beads were characterized by UV/Vis. spectrophotometry. The mean particle size of the phytoncide/alginate beads decreased with increasing stirring rate and concentration of the calcium chloride solution. The surface morphology of the phytoncide/alginate beads changed from smooth surfaces to skin-like rough surfaces with increasing LMWSA content. These results were due mainly to the increased hydrophilic groups at the bead surface, resulting in an increase in the release rate of phytoncide oil in the phytoncide/alginate beads.
To evaluate the effect of disinfectants for Alginate impression, several commercially available disinfectants were tested to Alginate model contaminated by Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Alginate specimens were artificially contaminated by Staphylococcus aureus and soaking in four commercially available disinfectants for 1, 5, 10 minutes and colonies were counted for each case. Significant reduction of bacterial colony counts was noted after soaking in 0.5% and 0.05% sodium hypochlorite and after soaking in 2% glutaraldehyde, but not after soaking in Hypochlorus add. Commercially available sodium hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde were found to be effective disinfectants for Alginate impression. But hypochlorus add was not adequate disinfectant.
In order to develop low calorie noodles, flours of Jerusalem artichoke and strong wheat were mixed with ratios of 25 : 75, 30 : 70 and 35 : 65. The substitution of wheat flour with Jerusalem artichoke powder up to 25% showed good formation of noodle stripes similar to that of wheat flour alone. The formation was effectively improved by addition of $0.5{\sim}1.0%$ solution alginate, 1.0% Fremol or mixure of 0.5% ${\alpha}-Polygel$, 0.5% Alcalin and 1.5% fremol for $25{\sim}30%$ substitution with Jerusalem articoke powder. Also addition of sodium alginate to the 30% substitution with Jerusalem artichoke powder showed the high Hunter value of Lightness and good cooking quality of noodle, relatively close to those of noodle of wheat flour alone. The dough prepared with mixed flours showed increase in cohesiveness and resilience and decrease in hardness and adhesiveness, compared to those of wheat flour. The addition of sodium alginate was very effective for increase in adhesiveness and cohesiveness. The cohesiveness of cooked noodles was increased with substitution with Jerusalem artichoke powder while sodium alginate influenced little. There is no significant difference of taste, odor, color and texture of cooked noodles between wheat flour alone and composite flours with $25{\sim}30%$ of Jerusalem artichoke and texture modifying agents. The results suggested that good quality noodles could be produced using Jerusalem artichoke powder.
