Analysis of Mixed-mode Crack Propagation by the Movable Cellular Automata Method

  • The propagation of a mixed-mode crack in soda-lime silica glass is modeled by movable cellular automata (MCA). In this model, a special fracture criterion is used to describe the process of crack initiation and propagation. The results obtained using the MCA criterion are compared to those obtained from other crack initiation criteria, The crack resistance curves and bifurcation angles are determined for various loading angles. The MCA results are in close agreement with results obtained using the maximum circumferential tensile stress criterion.

Uniform Field Emission from Carbon Nanotubes Fabricated by CO Disproportionation

  • Field emission of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) fabricated by disproportionation of CO has been studied. CNTs fabricated on well-ordered Co nanowire arrays formed on the porous anodic aluminum oxide templates were well graphitized, uniform in diameter and aligned vertically with respect to the plane of the template, and showed a good field emission property. Very uniform emissions were observed from the CNTs fabricated at relatively low temperature, $500-600^{\circ}C$. Low fabrication temperature such as $500^{\circ}C$ could make it possible to fabricate CNTs on soda lime glass, a low-cost substrate, for display panel.

  • The behavior of mechanical properties of ion exchanged glasses was investigated in this study. The used glasses were soda-lime-silica glasses that were produced by float process. The maximum values of the bending strength and the curvature depth are 45Kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 8.6mm respectively treated at 45$0^{\circ}C$ for 6h, which are 4.4 times and 3.3 times higher than parent glass. In the case, the thermalshock resistance ΔT is 335$^{\circ}C$ that is 205$^{\circ}C$ higher than parent glass, which is the maximum values in this study. The maximum values of the surface microhardness is 490Kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ in case of 43$0^{\circ}C$ for 4h. It is also found out that annealing points are increased linearly with increasing the amount of K+ ion exchange independent of treatment temperature. Furthermore, the present work shows that the ion exchange strengthened glasses are more effective than the physical tempering glasses ; the bending strength and the curvature depth are 1.8 times and twice higher respectively.

Improvement of Mechanical Property by Single Ion Exchange Process in Substrate Glass

  • In connection with the ion exchange strengthening on soda-lime-silicate, substrate glass for display use was investigated. In the processing, the temperature was varied during the ion exchange in order to make stress profile and to determine optimum condition. In the present work, we found that the maximum value of strength was 617.8 MPa after an ion exchange process at 470 $^{\circ}C$ for 1h, and then, at 450 $^{\circ}C$ for 24h. Also, the effect of residual stress placed on the near surface was measured by analyzing the number of crack branches and brittleness. This approach allowed us the residual stress profile to be engineered to improve mechanical reliability.

  • The glass used for mobile display windows is required to have high strength. Chemical strengthening by means of ion exchange is widely used glass. The depth of the layer and the compressed stress are affected by tempering temperature and time. The purpose of this study is to investigate the range of DOL and CS, which to less breakage during reliability tests such as the ball drop test, hole drop test, 3-point bending test, drop test, and tumble test with Soda-lime Glass.

Effects of pH, Alkalinity, Chloride Ion on the Copper Pipe Corrosion (동관에서 pH, 알칼리도, 염소이온이 부식에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effects of pH, alkalinity, and chlorine ion which are important water quality impact factors to the corrosion in the simulated distribution system where the copper pipe is affixed. The result shows that pitting index was increased as the alkalinity and chloride ion increase in the distilled water, but there was no relation to pH. Actually the uniform corrosion rate was decreased as the pH increase with the laboratory tap water. In conclusion, it is necessary to control the pH which stands above minimum 7.5 to prevent pitting corrosion in the copper pipe. Consequently, comprehensive research about the effect of lime soda($Ca(OH)_2$) which was used as a coagulation additive in the water treatment plant to pipe corrosion must be accomplished additionally.

Study on Properties of Antimony-doped Tin Oxide Thin Films Prepared by Sputtering (Sputtering 방법에 의해 제조된 Sb가 도핑된 주석산화물 박막의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Antimony-doped Tin oxide (ATO) thin films were deposited on soda-lime glass substrates by DC magnetron sputtering technique. Effects of DC power film thickness and post heat-treatment on electrical conductivity of ATO film were investigated. Other properties of ATO film such as optical anti-chemical and wear properties were also reported in this work. The obtained ATO films showed electrical resistivities ranging from 5$\times$10-3 $\Omega$cm to 3$\times$10-3 $\Omega$cm with the average optical transparency above 80% in visible wavelength range and excel-lent anti-chemical properties where the electrical resistivity was not changed even after soaking the films in 1M HCl or 1M NaOH solution for 10 days. These properties were found to be related to the crystallinity of ATO film and the films having higher crystallinity showed better properties.

Field Emission Properties of Flat Lamp using Carbon Nanotubes Grownon Glass Substrate (유리기판 위에 성장된 탄소나노튜브를 이용한 평판 램프의 전계방출 특성)

  • We fabricated the 1-inch diode type flat lamp using CNTs, which were grown directly on soda-lime glass substrate at 600 ∼ 650 $^{\circ}C$ by thermal chemical vapor deposition(CVD) of acetylene gas. Turn- on field was about 2.8 V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. We observed that uniform and high brightness had been obtained. The brightness of CNT flat lamp was measured up to about 14 kcd/$m^2$ at 2000V in spacing of 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The results showed that the CNTs were very good emission source and suitable for application in the lamp.

A Study on Material Properties and Fabrication of ITO Thin Films by Unbalanced-Magnet Structure in Magnetron Sputtering (DC 마그네트론 스파터링의 비대칭 자석강조에 의한 ITO 박막 제조 및 물성에 관한 연구)

  • Transparent conducting indium tin oxide (TC-ITO) thin films are deposited on soda lime glass by a dc magnetron sputtering technique having the unbalanced-magnet structure in order to improve the electrical/material characteristics and to avoid the surface damages. The material properties are measured by the x-ray diffractometer (XRD) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The (400) peak as the preferred orientation of <100> direction for ITO thin films is stabilized with the increase of substrate temperature. The surface roughness estimated by AFM 3D image at the substrate temperature of 40$0^{\circ}C$ is extremely uniform. The best resistivity of ITO films (5500 $\AA$ thick) at 40$0^{\circ}C$ is about 1.3$\times$10$^{-4}$ $\Omega$cm on the position of 4 cm from substrate center.

Stoichiometry dependency of the firing and sustain voltage properties of MgO thin films for AC plasma display panels (교류형 플라즈마 디스플레이용 MgO 박막의 조성변화에 따른 방전전압특성의 영향)

  • MgO thin films were deposited on soda lime glass substrates by rf magnetron sputtering using a MgO target at various oxygen flow ratios in order to probe the relationship between MgO film properties and discharge characteristics. MgO films have a tendency to form microstructures with a preferred growth orientation of (200) with increasing oxygen flo ration up to 0.1 $O_2$/(Ar+$O_2$). MgO film obtained at 0.1[$O_2$/(Ar+$O_2$)] was found to be fully stoichiometric. The stoichiometric MgO film was observed to have relatively very clean surface and grains of large size and contain almost no hydroxyl group. The AC PDP with fully stoichiometric MgO film showed lower firing and sustain voltages than those with magnesium-rich or oxygen-rich MgO films, being largely attributed to the larger grain size and the minimized hydroxyl group.
