The data were collected from about 140 middle school girls, 186 high school girls, and 194 college female students in Ulsan City using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions such as general characteristics of the subjects, vanity, and body shaping management. There were statistically significant differences in the 4 vanity sub-scales except physical concern and the body shaping management among the school groups(middle school, high school, college) and socio-economic status groups(low, middle, high). Socio-economic status, physical concern and view, and age were affected significantly on the body shaping management. Moderate vanity and body shaping management can prevent obesity and motivate personal development. Objectives : This study was to investigate the effect of socioeconomic factors of smokers on their smoking cessation plans, using Korean Welfare Panel data. Methods : Of the 16,664 subjects who responded to the 10th Korean Welfare Panel Survey, 2,246 respondents who answered that they were currently smoking were included in this study. Results : The variables that affected smoking cessation plans were female, low education level, low level of smoking per day, and more than 24 hours of smoking cessation experience. Conclusions : Expanding the smoking cessation program for women, preventing smoking in schools and providing smoking cessation education will likely have a positive effect on smoking cessation plans. In addition, it would be helpful to increase the amount of smoking cessation support aimed at reducing the amount of cigarettes smoked per day and continuing smoking cessation for more than 24 hours.

Methods: Based on a health survey(n=913) of 5 remote places in Korea, tests of the differences between the group that wants the CPR education(n=416) and the group that doesn't(n=497), and a logistic regression analysis of two groups was performed on socio-economic status and health-medical conditions. Furthermore, age(OR=1.599, p=0.002), age(OR=0.964, p=0.000), economic status(OR=0.804, p=0.028), and CPR education taken(OR=2.072, p=0.026) are statistically significant factors on the willingness to receive the CPR education. Conclusions: This study indicates that there is considerable variation in socio-economic status and health-medical conditions associated with the willingness to receive the CPR education. In remote places. certain subgroups of laypersons such as high-risk patients and family members need targeted outreach programs in CPR education.

Korean students ranked the 3rd out of 32 participating countries in the first cycle of PISA(Programme for International Student Assessment) science field, which assessed 15-years-old students' scientific literacy. PISA developed several variables such as parents' socio-economic status, parents' educational attainment, family wealth, and cultural possession, to investigate the effects of background variables on scientific literacy. On the other hand, motivation and engagement in science study were not given much attention, partly because science was the minor area in the first cycle of PISA. Therefore, PISA Korea developed a series of variables to collect data on students' learning motives and out-of-school activities in science as a national option. The results are as followings. First, Korea was found to be one of the PISA participating countries with the scientific literacy achievement least influenced by parents' socio-economic status, family wealth, and parents' cultural possession. Second, the degree of achievement in scientific literacy according to parents' educational attainment was in a positive correlation, similar to the overall tendency of PISA. Third, the most crucial learning motive for Korean students was their desire to develop scientific thinking abilities or obtain science knowledge. On the other hand, choosing jobs in the field of science or parental expectation was the least important learning motive. In particular, the motive for scientific learning was found to have a positive relationship with the degree of scientific literacy achievement. Therefore, the higher the students achievement, the stronger the motive for scientific learning in order to develop their ability to think scientifically or acquire science knowledge. Fourth, Korean students were shown to participate very little in out-of-school scientific activities other than watching TV programs related to science. Whatever the activities may be, the more actively involved students are in out-of-school scientific activities, the higher their scientific literacy achievement. Fifth, Korean girls were rather passive compared to boys in all areas, including science learning motive and out-of-school scientific activities. The gender difference was especially more pronounced in out-of-school scientific activities with wider gaps in such activities as reading scientific books or articles and visiting science-related web sites.
