  • Recently, as the generation and sharing of web data have increased, the importance of a social semantic web that combines the semantic web and the social web has also been increasing. In this paper, we propose a trust evaluation scheme based on provenance by extending the PROV model in the social semantic web environment. The proposed scheme manages the provenance of web data and adds the necessary elements for trust evaluation in the PROV model of W3C. The extended PROV model supports data management and provenance tracing. The proposed trust evaluation scheme considers various parameters such as user trust, original data trust, and user evaluation. The evaluated trust is managed as provenance. When processing a query, the proposed scheme generates a result by considering the trust. Therefore, the proposed scheme can manage the provenance of web data and compute data trust correctly by using such various parameters. The evaluated trust becomes a criterion to determine whether the query result can be trusted or not. In order to show the validity of the proposed scheme, we verify its performance using SPARQL queries.

  • This paper, as a conlcusion to this special issue, presents the future work that is being carried out at NTU Singapore in collaboration with Microsoft Research and Microsoft Azure for Research. For our research team the real frontier research in world histories starts when we want to use computers to structure historical information, model historical narratives, simulate theoretical large scale hypotheses, and incent world historians to use virtual assistants and/or engage them in teamwork using social media and/or seduce them with immersive spaces to provide new learning and sharing environments, in which new things can emerge and happen: "You do not know which will be the next idea. Just repeating the same things is not enough" (Carlo Rubbia, 1984 Nobel Price in Physics, at Nanyang Technological University on January 19, 2016).

  • An Old document(Diploma) is a historical and unique record, so it must be collected, arranged, and preserved for research as soon as possible. Especially, for the effective use of the Old Document(Diploma), it is needed to arrange and describe the material systematically on the ground of modern archival theory. The Kyujanggak Archives in the Seoul National University has published 23 volumes of Old document(Diploma) material Old Document(Diploma). But they seem to cause the readers inconvenience, because the materials are classified and gathered only by genre, the titles or the orders of the materials are not standardized, and there is no description about the content of each Old document(Diploma). Jangseo-gak Library in The Academy of Korean Studies has also published the series of Old document(Diploma) material Old Document(Diploma) Collection. However the case is not different, since they are all mixed up with materials classified and gathered by genre, family, academy, or local school. And a great part of the materials have no titles and no description about the content of each Old document(Diploma), either. About the arrangement and description of the records, European and American archival science has established the theory of l)the principle of provenance, 2)the principle of original order, 3)levels of control, 4)collective description. These theories are valuable for the effective use of Old document(Diploma). On the viewpoint of the principle of provenance, Old document(Diploma) materials should not be classified by subject and genre, but by family and person. Then, the Old document(Diploma) materials, after collected by the unit of family or person on the viewpoint of the principle of provenance, should be arranged in their original order for more detailed arrangement and furthermore, for the work to find their relationship. This is so called the principle of original order. The hierarchical management of the Old document(Diploma) materials, for example, classifying by record group, sub-group, series, item and so on, is the concept of the levels of control, and comprehensive description of the each hierarchical structure is the concept of the collective description. Let's apply these archival theories to 34 pieces of the Chung, Man-Seok's material in the series of Old document(Diploma) material Old Document(Diploma). First, collect the Old document(Diploma) materials into Chung, Man-Seok's collection(the principle of provenance), which were scattered in the series classified by genre. Secondly, rearrange them chronologically(the principle of original order), and then we can find the comprehensive information about Chung, Man-Seok. For the hierarchical management of the Old document(Diploma) materials, we should establish a few concepts from the general, large group to specific, small item. The concepts can be organized as following; l)record group(Chung, Man-Seok record group) - 2)sub-group(personnel document, property document, family document, social activity document, political activity document, etc) - 3)series(gyoji-series, gyoseo-series, yuji-series etc. in the personnel document) - 4)folder(document with additions) - 5)item(one document). According to the the theory of the collective description, in the level of record group, there should be a collective description of Chung, Man-Seok's biography or a summary of record group. Similarly, there should be a collective description of a summary of sub-group in the level of sub-group and a summary of series in the level of series.

  • Since the most ancient times, lapis lazuli had been used for luxury goods such as jewelry and seals, to embellish sculptures and weapons or the precious objects of tombs, such as the golden mask of Tutankhamon or the famous "Standard" of the royal cemetery of Ur. Much more recent seems to be its frequent use as a pigment in wall paintings or polychrome stucco. In this article, the question of the sources for this extremely rare mineral is briefly discussed and the places proposed by ancient scholars as deposits of the mineral are presented and examined. The information provided in the medieval Arabic and Persian scientific literature has been considered and compared with the data of our modern geological knowledge. A list of sites in Central Asia, the Middle East, and India with lapis lazuli occurrence on wall paintings illustrate its wide use in different artistic cultures and periods between the 2nd and 10th centuries C.E. These cultures are in fact different in ethnic and linguistic origin and in the religious, economic, and social sphere, but closely interconnected by common pan-regional artistic traditions in style, materials, and techniques employed. A case study investigated by the authors in the Friday Mosque of Iṣfahān gives an example of the use of lapis lazuli pigment in Islamic wall paintings and stuccoes.

  • This article purposes to define archival justice and suggest democratic modeling of the archive on the Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC), which is focused on victims of state violence. These purposes come from critical mind that the absence of framework of the records management for collective memory would cause incorporation of TRC archives into mainstream archives systems in which voices of victims have been marginalized. This article intends to expand theoretical prospects of documentation of past affairs through applying humanistic and theoretical frameworks differently from institutional and policy approaches on restoration of collective memory. In order to do this, this article first considers archival justice as archives building in which state violence' victims are pivotal and then extracts theoretical frameworks for building the archives based on archival justice from recent discourses of post-colonial archives and community archives. As the next step, it criticizes current conditions of TRC archives in Korea on the basis of extracted theoretical frames and finally suggests realistic models in which each theoretical frame could be applied effectively into TRC archives that is focused on victims.

  • Archival science is prior to explore meaning and role of record management in given environments rather than developing record management methodology. Electronic record environments don't merely mean to exchange record management medium from paper to digital. The most important point exploring in electronic record environments is not management skills or methods, but meaning of records and role of record management in contemporary society. All these days, however, the theories and methodologies has been developed focusing on written records and public records mainly in the deep-rooted influence of positivism. In such situations, the discussions of social memories can explore meanings and roles of record management in pluralistic society. Meanwhile, many articles in archival science has been widespread recognition that records will soon be just memories in terms of objective and neutral evidence. In recently, however, conviction on objectivity and neutrality of records has broken down by the influence of postmodernism on archival science. Therefore this article intends to explore the relationship between record and memory and to argue the roles of archival science for building social memories.

  • This study aims to identify the representation of migrants in the English-language media during the Brexit campaign period. For the purpose of this study, the methodological tool of corpus-assisted discourse studies(CADS) was employed and a collection was compiled of articles mentioning Brexit in British, American, Canadian, and Australian media from April 15 to June 22, 2016 in order to compare their portrayals of migrants. To examine how IMMIGRANT, MIGRANT, and REFUGEE are represented in the media, their collocates were analyzed by MI score and categorized by social actor categorization(Van Leeuwan, 1996). The results show that IMMIGRANT is related to collocates that refer to legal status and provenance, MIGRANT associated with economic terms, and REFUGEE relates to terms expressing quantities. The results also reveal that migrants are frequently depicted by functionalization, classification, and appraisement categorization and are more negatively portrayed in British and American media. This paper claims that corpus-assisted linguistic analysis of words enables one to identify salient linguistic patterns or lexical choices in the discourses about a particular phenomenon or group of people.

  • This study is intended to examine the existing condition of records and archives management and seek its improvement and progress on a concrete model of Daejon Diocese as a kind of case study, because it is necessary to recognize the importance of records and archives management and to develop the records and archives management system. Daejon Diocese which has the catholic jurisdiction covering the areas of Daejon city and Chung Cheong Nam - Do province, celebrated the 40th anniversary of the diocese in 1998. At that, time, the authority of Daejon Diocese claimed to establish its church history institution and to plan the publication of "40 years history of Daejon Diocese". However, its publication could not be achieved until now for several reasons. Since my search for the cause of this situation, I immediately recognized that the lack of materials might be a common condition in almost all of the associations, especially with respect to management, preservation and access of the records and archives. The records in the archival repository of Daejon Diocese have been considerably lost because of the past intemperate destruction and these records have just piled for long time without any reasonable disposal programme. Therefore, in these poor conditions, it is inevitable to delay the publication of "40 years history of Daejon Diocese." This thesis deals with the archival arrangement and the ways of improvement by means of studying the records and archives management, as the essential issues. The archival arrangement based on the principle of provenance, the date of creation, and form division. The methods of improvement include the preservation environment, the scope of archives, archival staff, disposal and so on. Records have the legal and social value after being produced and they can remain as historical and cultural inheritances under the excellent condition of management and preservation. However, in examining the case of the management and preservation of records and archives in Daejon Diocese, I understand that it will need considerable time, man power, and financial cost in order to maintain the desirable level of records and archives management system Therefore, it is a important step for Catholic Daejon to recognize the necessity of the change over records and archives management.

  • Recently, with the development of network technologies, as IoT and social network service applications have been actively used, a lot of graph stream data is being generated. In this paper, we propose a graph compression scheme that considers the stream graph environment by applying graph mining to the existing compression technique, which has been focused on compression rate and runtime. In this paper, we proposed Incremental frequent pattern based compression technique for graph streams. Since the proposed scheme keeps only the latest reference patterns, it increases the storage utilization and improves the query processing time. In order to show the superiority of the proposed scheme, various performance evaluations are performed in terms of compression rate and processing time compared to the existing method. The proposed scheme is faster than existing similar scheme when the number of duplicated data is large.

  • Finding aids have existed from the time when ancient archives appeared, With this long history, they have been used in most of Western archives, and thus, it is one of the most familiar tasks generally performed by archivists. However, ironically, this accustomed concept has not been an academic object to many researchers. Especially, in this electronic age, finding aids are even more complicated in their forms and meanings. This paper intends to address the concept(s) of finding aids as reflected in the archival literature in North America. The paper will attempt to illustrate how the concept of finding aid has evolved both conceptually and practically in archives and archival science and how circumstantial and social elements affect this concept. It Seems that the concept of finding aids has developed from the broad and integrated concept of provenance and pertinence to the narrower and practical sense considering the use by the public. It also turns out that the concept has advanced from a mere technical tool for describing records to an access tool for maximum availability. Not surprisingly, the concept of finding aids have changed as archival science and the profession has advanced and diversified. It is crucial for the archival community to understand changes in the practice and the concept of finding aids that will enable the preparation of higher quality finding aids enabling the optimum use of archives.
