  • The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of peer relationships and parental relationships on suicidal ideation in elementary school students and the mediating effects of anxiety in the process. For this purpose, 273 students in grades 4-6 of elementary school are examined for path analysis of peer relationship, convergent parent relationship, anxiety and suicidal ideation. The main results are as follows. First, anxiety of elementary school students is found to be fully mediating between peer relationship and suicidal ideation. Second, the anxiety of elementary school is found to be partly mediating between parental relationship and suicidal ideation. Therefore, in order to lower the suicidal ideation of the upper grades students of elementary school, developing various programs to reduce anxiety factors and apply them to the practice field is desired.

  • To detect anxiolytic activity from Sanguisorbae Radix we used various animal models of fear or anxiety that are sensitive to known anxiolytic drugs. While diazepam showed significant anxiolytic activities in all five animal models empolyed in this study, $5-HT_3$ antagonist ondansetron and ethylacetate fraction of Sanguisorbae Radix did show anti-anxiety effects in social interaction and two compartment exploration tests. Ethylacetate fraction of Sanguisorbae Radix and 5-HT related drugs like ondansetron and buspirone, however, seem to have merit over diazepam in terms of not causing drowsiness. Among ten subfractions obtained from ethylacetate fraction of Sanguisorbae Radix by silica gel chromatography, subfraction I showed higher anxiolytic activities than subfraction DEF in two animal models, social interaction and two compartment exploration tests. There is growing evidence for the role of 5-HT in the control of anxiety. We hope that new compound(s) will be found from the active fractions of Sanguisorbae Radix as a potential anxiolytic agent in the future.

The results were as follows: First, affective well-being made an effect by avoidant attachment and anxiety attachment, and was more affected by interpersonal relationship than anxiety attachment including mediating variable of interpersonal relationship. Second, there was a significant effect in cognitive well-being only by anxiety attachment. Including mediating variables of interpersonal relationship, cognitive well-being affected by interpersonal relationship only. Third, interpersonal relationship mediated partially the relationship between attachment and affective well-being, and perfectly between attachment and cognitive well-being.

Methods: This study was performed with 189 elderly people. Data were collected through a self-report questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the SPSS and AMOS programs. Results: The factors influencing death anxiety in the elderly were depression, family support, social network, and familism value, and the explanatory power of these variables was 22%. Death anxiety increased with higher depression, higher familism value, larger social network, and lower family support. Spiritual well-being and elderly discrimination experience had indirect effects on death anxiety, and these effects were mediated by depression. Conclusion: Depression, family support, social network, and familism value were found to influence death anxiety in the elderly, and the strongest effect came from depression. To reduce death anxiety in the elderly, it is important to improve their relationship with their family and friends. Moreover, support should be provided by establishing local systems, and intervention should be provided to alleviate depression.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to examine the relationships among daily hassles, social support, entrapment and mental health status in relation to gender in university students. Methods: Data were collected via a self- administered questionnaire from 118 male and 98 female college students in Kangwon province. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in daily hassles, entrapment and depression between male and female group. Also, there were significant relationship between entrapment and mental health status (i.e. depression, anxiety, hostility, somatization) in both groups. In male students, internal entrapment was the significant predictor of depression and anxiety, and external entrapment was the significant predictor of hostility and somatization whereas, in female students external entrapment was the significant predictor of depression, and internal entrapment was the significant predictor of anxiety, hostility and somatization. Conclusion: These results suggest that entrapment is an important factor for psychological maladaptation due to stressful life events. Therefore, strategies that reduce perception of entrapment according to gender should be developed for psychological adaptation.

Methods : One hundred and seventy marriage-migrant women and one hundred and sixteen married Korean women were recruited from community to complete Symptom Check List-90-Revision (SCL-90-R). Marriage-migrant women were also asked for their socio-demographic factors, acculturative stress, family-relationship stress, and social support. The scores on the SCL-90-R were compared between marriage-migrant women and married Korean women, and the correlates of marriage-migrant women's mental health were investigated. Results : Compared to married Korean women, marriage-migrant women showed lower levels of mental health problems including somatization, obsession-compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism. Longer length of residence in Korea, lower family income, social support, higher acculturation stress, and family relationship stress were all associated with mental health problems of marriage-migrant women Results : Our results suggest that mental health of marriage-migrant women is not necessarily bad, and several factors may affect their mental health. However, further studies are required in a larger representative sample to confirm the study findings.
