A Study of Leisure Constraints, Leisure Activities Participation and Life Satisfaction of the Elderly (노인의 여가제약, 여가활동참여와 생활만족도의 관계 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out leisure constraints of the elderly and to examine how these constraints influence their participation in leisure activities and life satisfaction. The data analysis of 291 senior citizens over 60 years old were conducted, the research results are as follows: first, leisure constraints of senior citizens stem from individual, societal, economic, family constraints. It indicates that anyone of constraints did not exclusively determine leisure constraints. Rather, the result implies that leisure constraints for the elderly is from multifaceted levels of social system. Second, participation in leisure activities positively worked on life satisfaction. Third, leisure constraints of the elderly directly influenced their participation in leisure activities and life satisfaction. In conclusion, to revitalize senior citizens' participation in leisure activities is critical in advancing their life satisfaction. Nationwide positive and supportive social environment for their leisure participation should be established first, on which social and legal systems should be consequently organized. At the same time, social supports to provide opportunities for their leisure participation are required for the future senior citizens.

Factors Influencing the Emotional State of Patients with Lymphedema (림프부종 환자의 정서상태와 관련요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the emotional state and related factors in patients with lymphedema. Methods: The subjects of this study consisted of 95 patients with lymphedema at 8 hospitals in Busan and Seoul. Data was collected by a self-administered questionnaire between March 2001 to December 2001. Data was analyzed by Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS Win 12.0. Results: The mean score of the emotional state of the subjects was 3.06; of their physical symptoms, 1.84; of their Activities of Daily Living(ADLs), 2.30; and of their social activities, 3.67. The emotional states of lymphedema patients correlated with their physical symptoms, their ADLs, and their social activities. The Factor influencing the emotional state of the subjects was social activities. Conclusion: These results suggest that a negative emotional state is very common in patients with lymphedema, to which appropriate attention should be given. Rehabilitation programs must be implemented to improve lymphedema patients' emotional state, physical symptoms, ADLs, and social activities.

Smart Divide and the Paradigm Shift of Social Capital

  • In the current smart device-based information environment, information utilization is closely related to social capital. Additionally, the smart divide that occurs owing to the differences in use of smart devices has a significant influence on social capital. In this respect, this research empirically analyzed how the smart divide affects social capital construction. The study found that the level of and proficiency in using smart devices and diversity of the information formats used through smart devices affect social capital construction. Further, people who fully utilize smart devices can enhance their participation in social activities, social networks, and reciprocal activities, leading people to construct social capital in a wider range. Contrarily, those who are unable to use smart devices adequately may be disadvantaged in terms of the opportunity to construct social capital and share public interests. Thus, to maximize the intrinsic value of social capital, it is necessary to consider the factors of the smart divide as a complicated and multi-faceted digital divide and the ways to utilize social capital as a driving force for integrating society, and not as a mechanism for dividing members of society.

Why Social Comparison on Instagram Matters: Its impact on Depression

  • Social Networking Sites (SNS) provide people with unique online social interaction environments where users can disclose their thoughts, feelings, and opinions to their personal contacts. Although previous studies have suggested that such activities produce positive effects on SNS user well-being, this study considered potential negative effects by investigating the relationship between SNS use and depression. In particular, This stydy examined how specific activities are related to different types of social comparison (upward/downward/horizontal) and how these different types of social comparison influence depressed moods among college students. The analysis of a survey of 245 Instagram users found that (1) looking at other people's status updates and commenting on other people's photos influences upward social comparison, (2) frequency of Instagram use predicts upward/downward/horizontal social comparison, and (3) upward social comparison was postively associated with depression, while downward social comparison was negatively associated with depression. Furthermore, the path anlaysis show that social comparison mediates the effect of Instagram use on depression. It suggests that Instagram use does not directly increase depression but it can lead to depression when social comparison on Instagram triggers depression.

A study on the Social Contribution Activities of Social Enterprises which can bring out Customer's Empathic Response -Focusing on Familiarity and Authenticity- (소비자의 공감반응을 끌어낼 수 있는 사회적기업의 사회공헌 활동에 관한연구 - 친숙성과 진정성을 중심으로 -)

  • This study has analyzed on affecting factors of the customer's empathy toward the corporate philanthropic activities in terms of corporates and their products. From the corporate perspective, we have checked how the activities affect the perception of the customer familiarity and authenticity. Study shows that the fairness of the social contribution activities have an impact on both the familiarity and the authenticity (hypothesis 1, hypothesis 2). Social contributions reciprocity has been shown to influence familiarity (hypothesis 3) and it was not statistically significant to the authenticity (hypothesis 4). Looking at the relationship between the familiarity and authenticity from the product side, charm and familiarity (hypothesis 5), uniqueness and authenticity (hypothesis 8) showed that the impact on the definition. On the other hand charm and authenticity (hypothesis 6), uniqueness and familiarity (hypothesis 7) appeared to be not statistically significant. Finally, the relationship between familiarity, authenticity and empathy is as follows. First, the familiarity was found that it is affecting the authenticity (hypothesis 9) and for the consumer sympathetic (hypothesis 10) appeared to be not statistically significant. And the authenticity was found having a defined effect on the consumer sympathetic (hypothesis 11). It is really far more important to suggest an integrated approach to continue a sustainable and stable relationship by increasing consumer purchasing and empathy for the products and services of social enterprises. This study provides practical implications for marketing strategies of social enterprises, which can draw the consumer sympathy through the social contribution activities of social enterprise.

A Study on the Changing in Social Interest, Motivation and Attitude of Nursing College Students to Voluntary Activity after a Voluntary Program (간호대학생의 사회봉사활동 후 사회성, 사회봉사활동에 대한 동기 및 태도의 변화)

  • This study attempted to compare the social interest, motivation, and attitude of nursing college students who participated in a voluntary program and the students who didn't participate in a voluntary program. The purpose of this study can be summarized as to find the effect of a voluntary program and to offer fundamental data for institutionalizing a voluntary program in college. The subjects were composed of two groups, one group attend the voluntary program and the other group doesn't. The subjects were 390 nursing students: 179 in the experimental group and 211 in the control group. The results of this study are as follows : 1. Before voluntary activities, the mean value of the control group was higher than that of the experimental group in social interest and altruistic motivation. The difference is statistically meaningful(t= -2.2.53, p=.25, t= -2.509, p= .013). 2. After voluntary activities, selfish motivation and altruistic motivation in the experimental group was higher than before. The difference is statistically meaningful(t= 2.404, p=.0l7, t=-2.751, p=.007). 3. The social interest, selfish motivation, altruistic motivation toward voluntary activities and selfish attitude, altruistic attitude toward voluntary activities will not have changed in the control group before or after voluntary program. However, the altruistic attitude lowered after voluntary activity. It is statistically meaningful(t=2.694, p=.008). 4. After the voluntary activities, there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in altruistic attitude. In the experimental group, the mean value of altruistic attitude increased significantly, but in the control group the mean value of altruistic attitude decreased ( t = 2.15, p = .032). The results of this study showed that voluntary activities not only increase social interest and altruistic attitude, but also the subject's understanding toward the community. 3. The social interest, selfish motivation, altruistic motivation toward voluntary activities and selfish attitude, altruistic attitude toward voluntary activities will not have changed in the control group before or after voluntary program. However, the altruistic attitude lowered after voluntary activity. It is statistically meaningful (t=2.694. p=.008). 4. After the voluntary activities, there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in altruistic attitude. In the experimental group, the mean value of altruistic attitude increased significantly, but in the control group the mean value of altruistic attitude decreased (t = 2.15, p =.032).   • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the community development by the community involvement level of the corporate social contribution activities. This study classified Korean company's best social contribution activities according to the community involvement level and the effectiveness of the community development was analyzed on selected case activities. As a result, corporations that working on high level of community involvement show positive effectiveness of community development. Networking and communication with local people on the corporate social contribution activities have an effect on the community development of the economy, safety, convenience, comfortability, socio-cultural factor. It is necessary for the participation and communication with local people to develop corporate social contribution consistently. Furthermore, intermediary organization is needed to be set up various networks of stakeholders, especially community.

A Convergence Study of the Influence of Empathy and Prosocial Behavior on School Life Happiness of Multicultural and Korean Adolescents through Sports Activity (스포츠 활동을 통한 다문화 청소년과 한국 청소년의 공감과 친사회적 행동이 학교생활행복에 미치는 영향의 융합적 연구)

  • The study is aimed at examining the influence of empathy and pro-social behavior on school life happiness of multicultural and Korean adolescents through sports activities. The results of the analysis of total 461 adolescents participating in sports activities and not participating in sports activities are as follows. Adolescents participating in sports activities have higher levels of empathy, pro-social behavior and school life happiness than those who do not participate. And the more experience involved in sports activities, the higher the level of empathy, the level of pro-social behavior and the level of school life happiness. There is a significant correlation between empathy and pro-social behavior and school life happiness. Empathy and pro-social behavior factors affecting school life happiness are statistically influencing factors such as "relationship formation", "communication", "cooperation", "assistance", "emotional expression", and "comfort". The results of this study suggest the importance of dealing with empathy and pro-social behavior through sports activities in the school life happiness of multicultural families and Korean adolescents.

The Effects of Relative Handgrip Strength on Cognitive Function: The Moderating Roles of Paid Employment Status and Social Activities (노인의 상대적 악력이 인지기능에 미치는 영향: 경제활동과 사회참여의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • The present study examined whether the relation between relative handgrip strength and cognitive function varied by paid employment status and participation of social activities among Korean older adults. A total of 3,376 Korean adults aged 65 or older were drawn from the 2016 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA). Weighted hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine moderating effects of paid employment status and social activities on the relation between relative handgrip strength and cognitive function. After adjusting for covariates, results show that relative handgrip strength has a positive association with cognitive function. Both paid employment status and social activities have positive associations with cognitive function and moderate the relationship between relative handgrip strength and cognitive function. These significant moderating effects show that participating in paid employment and social activities buffer against the effect of lower handgrip strength on cognitive function. Findings from the present study highlight the significant role of active aging in older adults'cognitive function. Implications are discussed in a cultural context.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the factors influencing social performance of entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation, and CSR activities. This model tests various theoretical research hypotheses relating to social enterprise, entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation, and CSR activities. Entrepreneurial orientation have been classified as innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking. And CSR activities have been classified as community responsibility and environmental responsibility. The proposed model is analyzed to target social entrepreneurs. Valid 115 questionnaires have been collected within three months of 2013. Smart Partial Least Square(PLS) 2.0 have been utilized for deriving the study results. The result of hypothesis testing are as follows. First, innovativeness and proactiveness positively influence market orientation. But risk-taking does not influence market orientation. Second, market orientation positively influence community responsibility and environmental responsibility. Finally, community responsibility and environmental responsibility positively influence social performance. The results of this study will provide various implications to improve social performance and entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation, and CSR activities.
