In this paper, we develop a virtual experimental environment to investigate users' eye gaze in human-robot social interaction, and verify it's potential for further studies. The system consists of a 3D robot character capable of hosting simple interactions with a user, and a gaze processing module recording which body part of the robot character, such as eyes, mouth or arms, the user is looking at, regardless of whether the robot is stationary or moving. To verify that the results acquired on this virtual environment are aligned with those of physically existing robots, we performed robot-guided quiz sessions with 120 participants and compared the participants' gaze patterns with those in previous works. The results included the followings. First, when interacting with the robot character, the user's gaze pattern showed similar statistics as the conversations between humans. Second, an animated mouth of the robot character received longer attention compared to the stationary one. Third, nonverbal interactions such as leakage cues were also effective in the interaction with the robot character, and the correct answer ratios of the cued groups were higher. Finally, gender differences in the users' gaze were observed, especially in the frequency of the mutual gaze.
Recently, eight out of ten people have smartphone in Korea. Also, many applications of smartphone have increased. So, smartphone addiction has become a social issue. Especially, many people in smartphone addiction can't control themselves. Sometimes they don't realize that they are smartphone addiction. Many studies, mostly surveys, have been conducted to diagnose smartphone addiction, e.g. S-measure. In this paper, we suggest how to detect smartphone addiction based on ECG and Eye Gaze. We measure the signals of ECG from the Shimmer and the signals of Eye Gaze from the smart eye when the subjects see the emotional video. In addition, we extract features from the S-transform of ECG. Using Eye Gaze signals(pupil diameter, Gaze distance, Eye blinking), we extract 12 features. The classifier is trained using Random Forest. The classifiers detect the smartphone addiction using the ECG and Eye Gaze signals. We compared the detection results with S-measure results that surveyed before test. It showed 87.89% accuracy in ECG and 60.25% accuracy in Eye Gaze.

Emotional interaction in virtual reality is necessary of social communication. However, social emotion has been tried to be less recognized quantitatively. This study was to determined social gaze of emotion in business domain. 417 emotion words were collected and 16 emotion words were selected to Goodness of Fit. Emotion word were mapped into 2 dimensional space through multidimensional scaling analysis. Then, X axis defined dimensions of cooperation, competition, and Y axis of low focus and high focus through the FGD. 52 subjects were presented to stimuli for emotion and gaze movement data were collected. Independent t-test results showed that the gaze factor increased in the face, eye, and nose areas at cooperation, and the gaze factor increased in the right face and nose areas at the low focus. It is expected that this will be used as a basic research to evaluate emotions needed in business environment in virtual space.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of individuals with social anxiety tendency and normal people according to existence of emotional context in attention processing for positive facial stimulation. To do this, we investigated attentional processing for positive face stimuli in a condition without/with emotional context. SADS and CES-D were administered to 800 undergraduate students in D city and the social anxiety group (SA, n=24) and the normal control group (NC, n=24) were selected. In order to measure the two factors of attention process (attention engagement and attention disengagement), first gaze direction and first gaze time were measured through eye-movement tracking. The results show that the SA group exhibited faster attention disengagement from positive face stimuli compared to the NC group in the condition without context. But, when the positive context presented with positive face stimuli, there is no difference between SA and NC. This result suggests that the positive background affects emotional processing of social anxiety disorder.
In this study, eye tracking was used for the appearance of the robot during the social robot design study. During the research, each part of the social robot was designated as AOI (Areas of Interests), and the user's attitude was measured through a design evaluation questionnaire to construct a design research model of the social robot. The data used in this study are Fixation, First Visit, Total Viewed, and Revisits as eye tracking indicators, and AOI (Areas of Interests) was designed with the face, eyes, lips, and body of the social robot. And as design evaluation questionnaire questions, consumer beliefs such as Face-highlighted, Human-like, and Expressive of social robots were collected and as a dependent variable was attitude toward robots. Through this, we tried to discover the mechanism that specifically forms the user's attitude toward the robot, and to discover specific insights that can be referenced when designing the robot.
Various current events provide evidence that society is undergoing changes in perceptions of social relationships. Specifically, visual media in the form of advertisements can convey images which reflect society's values and concepts about role relationships. The purpose of this research was to examine ads in fashion magazines to determine what types of model roles and role relationships typically appear in fashion advertising which can mirror society's values. A content analysis was conducted of ads obtained from US Vogue and US GQ for the year 2002. Six kinds of roles/relationships were found: (1) Narcissism (representing self absorption), (2) sexually enticing opposite-sex relationships, (3) close/romantic same-sex relationships, (4) friend relationships, (5) family relationships, and (6) independent relationships. Of these, narcissism predominated, however, a small number of sexually provocative ads appeared as well as same-sex romantic relationships. Because sole (single) models were more typical, they also were examined to determine ways in which they relate to the audience. Characteristics examined included body presentation & pose, eye gaze, and facial expression. Direct eye gaze was the typical way to engage the audience. Gender differences were apparent: smiling was more typical of women, indifference for men. The symbolic meaning and values investigated from this research are the blurring of gender identity portrayed in homosexual imagery, family values, and the value of youth. The consistency of models' race in ads does not portray the diversity reflected in the demographic census.

This study was designed to examine the difference in visual attention between the evaluations of facial attractiveness and facial trustworthiness, both of which may be the two most fundamental social evaluation for forming first impressions under various types of social interactions. In study 1, participants were asked to evaluate the attractiveness and trustworthiness of 40 new faces while their gaze directions being recorded using an eye-tracker. The analysis revealed that participants spent significantly longer gaze fixation time while examining certain facial features such as eyes and nose during the evaluation of facial trustworthiness, as compared to facial attractiveness. In study 2, participants performed the same face evaluation tasks, except that a word was briefly displayed on a certain facial feature in each face trial, which were then followed by unexpected recall tests of the previously viewed words. The analysis demonstrated that the recognition rate of the words that had been presented on the nose was significantly higher for the task of facial trustworthiness vs. facial attractiveness evaluation. These findings suggest that the evaluation of facial trustworthiness may be distinguished by that of facial attractiveness in terms of the allocation of attentional resources.

While online social interactions have been more prevalent with the increased popularity of Metaverse platforms, little has been studied the effects of facial expressions in virtual reality (VR), which is known to play a key role in social contexts. To understand the importance of presenting facial expressions of a virtual avatar under different contexts, we conducted a user study with 24 participants where they were asked to have a conversation and play a charades game with an avatar with and without facial expressions. The results show that participants tend to gaze at the face region for the majority of the time when having a conversation or trying to guess emotion-related keywords when playing charades regardless of the presence of facial expressions. Yet, we confirmed that participants prefer to see facial expressions in virtual reality as well as in real-world scenarios as it helps them to better understand the contexts and to have more immersive and focused experiences.

Alternative computer access devices are one of the ways for the physically disabled to meet their desire to participate in social activities. Most of these devices provide access to computers by using their feet or heads. However, it is not easy to control the mouse by using their feet, head, etc. with physical disabilities. In this paper, we propose a computer access system for the physically disabled. The proposed system can move the mouse only by the user's gaze using the eye-tracking technology. The mouse can be clicked through the external button which is relatively easy to press, and the character can be inputted easily and quickly through the voice recognition. It also provides detailed functions such as mouse right-click, double-click, drag function, on-screen keyboard function, internet function, scroll function, etc.
