Social media is becoming more and more important in social movements. This study, adopting the web mining approach, attempts to investigate how social media, Facebook in particular, functioned in the "May 25 Protest" and the "May 27 Protest", two movements which broke out in Macao on 25 and 27 May 2014, respectively, against the Retirement Package Bill. In the two protests, Macao residents deployed Facebook to share information and motivated people's participation. Twelve events (181,106 people invited) and 36 groups/pages (41,266 members) related on Facebook were examined. Results showed that the information flow on Facebook fluctuated in accordance with the event development in reality. Multiple patterns of manifestation, such as video of adopted news or songs, designed profile (protest icon), original ironic pictures, self-organized clubs by undergraduates and white T-shirts as a symbol, among others, appeared online and interacted with offline actions. It was also found that social media assisted the information diffusion and provided persuasive reasons for netizens to join the movement. Social media helped to expand movement influence in providing a platform for diversified performances for actions taken in a protest, which could express and develop core and consistent movement repertoire.
Purpose - In this study, we aimed to theorize blockchain-based social media platform users' commitment by examining the impact of their perceived justice of the token reward system. In addition, this study applied psychological ownership theory to verify the underlying mechanism between users' perceptions of justice and their commitment to the platforms. Research design, data, and methodology - To empirically test our conceptual framework in the study, we collected data through a web-based survey approach from the responses of 385 users who had experience with blockchain-based social media platforms. We employed a structural equation modeling approach to empirically test our proposed hypotheses. Result - The results indicated that distributive justice and informational justice have positive effects on user commitment. The results also showed that psychological ownership plays an important role in mediating the relationship between users' sense of distributive justice and commitment, and between procedural justice and commitment. The findings provided a better understanding of the sense of justice and user commitment in a blockchain-based social media environment. Conclusion - This study represents a preliminary attempt to theorize and empirically examine blockchain-based social media platform users' commitment. This study provided important contributions to the literature on how the effect of users' sense of justice in a reward system affects their commitment to blockchain-based social media platforms.
The advancement of information technologies including the Internet has affected the way of social information processing as well as brought about the paradigm shift to the information society. Accordingly, it is very important to study the process of social information processing over the digital media through which social information is generated, distributed, and led to social consensus. In this study, we analyze the mechanism of social information processing, identify a process model of social consensus and institutionalization of the results, and finally propose a set of information processing characteristics on the internet media. We deploy the ethnographic approach to analyze the meaning of group behavior in the context of society to analyze two major events which happened in Korean society. The formation process of social consensus is found to consist of 5 steps: suggestion of social issues, selective reflection on public opinion, acceptance of the issues and diffusion, social consensus, and institutionalization and feedback. The key characteristics of information processing in the Internet is grouped into proactive response to an event, the changes in the role of opinion leader, the flexibility of proposal and analysis, greater scalability, relevance to consensus making, institutionalization and interaction. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a process model of social information processing which can be used as the basis for analyzing the social consensus making process from the social network perspective. In addition, this study suggests a new perspective where the utility of the Internet media can be understood from the social information processing so that other disciplines including politics, communications, and management can improve the decision making performance in utilizing the Internet media.
Location-based services play an important role in many applications such as disaster warning systems and recommendation systems. These applications often require not only location information (e.g., name, latitude, longitude, etc.) but also the impact of events (e.g., earthquake, typhoon, etc.) on locations. Recently, to provide the impact of an event on a location, how to calculate location trustiness by using multimodal information such as earthquake information and disaster sensor data is researched. In the previous approach, the linear decrement of impact value of an event is applied to obtain the location trustiness of a specific location. In this paper, we propose a new approach to enrich location trustiness, that is, the impact of an event on a location, by using social media information additionally. Firstly, we design a collecting system for earthquake information and social media data. Secondly, we present an approach of location trustiness calculation based on earthquake information. Finally, we propose a new approach to enrich location trustiness by augmenting the trustiness in spatially distributed manner based on social media.
This study was designed to examine the meaning of housing in modern Korea, and to draw the interrelationship of people and housing. In-depth interviews were conducted, and the qualitative research investigated various aspects of housing history among four individuals during the different phases of social and economic transitions. Each narratives showed the unique characteristics of life history, and the conceptual frameworks for interpretation were microsociological approach by Morris and Winter(1978) and pathway approach by Clapham(2005). One narrater named "K" had gone through various housing experiences since her birth in 1933 at a traditional Korean housing, and she moved to a traditional rural community. Another narrater called "S" was born in housing built during the Japanese colonization, gained wealth through the housing boom of the industrialization, and has lived in a suburban condominium. "G" spent her entire life in an urban area, had never owned a house, and lived in a house with poor quality. The other narrater named "L" had lived in a single-family home with a large yard since her childhood, and she has resided in multi-family housing by herself after having a lot of experiences of building houses. The results revealed that housing could play as a simple role as a shelter, be transformed over family life cycle, become prestige of extended family, social and family status, investment. Meaning of housing from the pathway approach were closely related to hometown, the relation to birth family at postmarriage, economic status, and housing experiences according to the social change. As a conclusion, the meaning of housing is vary, and housing conveys numerous implications including psychological, social and economic aspects.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the selected predictors of the health promotion behavior of the elderly in Kangseo-ku, Kangnam-ku, Seoul. The study used an ecological perspective approach in that a microsystem (i.e. self-esteem, locus of control, introversion-extraversion and socio-demographic characteristics), and the environment such as a mesosystem (i.e. marriage satisfaction) and a macrosystem (i.e. social support, participation of social activities, social image of the elderly, social attitude of the elderly) were explored. A structured questionnaire was used to interview a sample of 188 elderly. Hierarchicai regression analysis yielded the results that the magnitude of the importance of the microsystem was found to be larger than any other systems investigated. The most powerful predictor of the health promotion behavior of the elderly was 'age', followed by 'participation of social activities', 'education', 'social support', 'locus of control', 'marriage satisfaction', and 'sex'. The research model accounted for $55\%$ of the health promotion behavior of the elderly.
Purpose - This study aims to conceptualize the construct of social media (SM) fatigue. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative approach is employed to understand how SM users currently perceive (or interpret) the goals of SM usage and to conceptualize SM fatigue and its dimensions. We collected data through in-depth interviews of three SM users and group discussions among eighty SM users. Findings - we draw a definition of SM fatigue from a resource view that excessive SM use might lead to SM fatigue by depleting the internal resources of SM users. Further, through the analysis of the qualitative data from interviews and group discussions, we find the multi-dimensional nature of SM fatigue and identify five dimensions of SM fatigue-fatigue from the social obligation to interact with people, the importance of self-appearance, the quality of information, the quantity of information, and undesirable events-and common sources of fatigue in each dimension. Research implications or Originality - The conceptualization of SM fatigue elaborated in this study could enable scientific exploration of the role of SM fatigue in users' attitudes or behavior formation and change. On a practical front, this study would be valuable to companies by facilitating systematic investigations of their customers' fatigue through the lens of the SM fatigue dimensions.

Event detection using social media has been widespread since social network services have been an active communication channel for connecting with others, diffusing news message. Especially, the real-time characteristic of social media has created the opportunity for supporting for real-time applications/systems. Social network such as Twitter is the potential data source to explore useful information by mining messages posted by the user community. This paper proposed a novel system for temporal event detection by analyzing social data. As a result, this information can be used by first responders, decision makers, or news agents to gain insight of the situation. The proposed approach takes advantages of deep learning methods that play core techniques on the main tasks including informative data identifying from a noisy environment and temporal event detection. The former is the responsibility of Convolutional Neural Network model trained from labeled Twitter data. The latter is for event detection supported by Recurrent Neural Network module. We demonstrated our approach and experimental results on the case study of earthquake situations. Our system is more adaptive than other systems used traditional methods since deep learning enables to extract the features of data without spending lots of time constructing feature by hand. This benefit makes our approach adaptive to extend to a new context of practice. Moreover, the proposed system promised to respond to acceptable delay within several minutes that will helpful mean for supporting news channel agents or belief plan in case of disaster events.
Recently, Community Rebuilding Projects (hereinafter CRPs) in Korea have been driven and motivated by community inhabitants by themselves, and highlighted as an alternative approach to overcome the limitation revealed normally in top-down projects of community vitalization by the Government. The CRPs encourage community-lead development because it happens to integrate multiple stakeholders and to help inhabitants to participate in the process of the CRPs by accumulating and enlarging social capital and network among inhabitants, and the social gain consequently raises the efficiency of public investment in revitalizing communities. In this study, the series of Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) is to be elaborated and the System-Thinking (ST) approach is to be presented to understand the dynamic characteristics residing in the above development process of rebuilding communities. The ST approach refers to the CLDs analyzing 19 remarkable Korean CRP cases, and leads to a conclusion including some of policy instruments to support the bottom-up CRPs in Korea. This study contributes a theoretical framework to understand the dynamic relation between social capital and community revitalization as well as empirical suggestions to respond to the issues of the CRPs in Korean local governments.
