  • This paper proposes a new type of voltage sag-swell compensator based on a Z-source AC-AC converter. The proposed topology employs a pulse width modulation (PWM) Z-source AC-AC converter along with a injection transformer. A safe commutation strategy is used to eliminate voltage spikes on switches without snubber circuit. During a voltage sag or swell, the proposed system controls the adding or missing voltage and maintains the rated voltage of sinusoidal waveform at the terminals of the critical loads. The proposed system is able to compensate 20[%] voltage swell and is also able to compensate 60[%] voltage sag. In order to control and detect the voltage sag and swell, the peak voltage detection method is applied. Also, the operating principles of the proposed system are described, and a circuit analysis is provided. Finally, PSIM simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed concept and theoretical analysis.

  • This paper is a record of the study on a high efficiency and high power chopper based on the new soft switching method QRAS (Quasi~resonant Regenerating Active Snubber) designed for a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). This power chopper is basically proposed for 25kHz soft switching. To confirm the practicality and effectiveness of the converter, the fabrication of a prototype-model using IGBTs was completed. Additionally, a 8kW rating test, a light load test, a current discontinuous mode test and a stable operation resonance test was completed. The circuit geometry, the basic operation, and the 8kW one-tenth-prototype test results are reported with a $97.5\%$ efficiency measurement.

  • A zero voltage switching (ZVS) three level auxiliary resonant commutated pole inverter (ARCPI) is presented for high power GTO inverters. The concept of ARCP for two level inverter is extended to the three inverter. The proposed auxiliary commutation circuit consists of one resonant inductor and two bi-directional switches, which provides ZVS condition to the main devices without increasing device voltage or current stresses. The auxiliary device operates with zero current switching (ZCS) which enables use of the low cost thyristors. The proposed ARCPI can handle higher voltage and higher power (1-10MVA) comparing to the two level one. Operation and analysis of the ARCPI are illustrated and the features are compared o those of the snubber circuit incorporated three level inverter. Experimental results with 10kW, 4kHz prototype are presented to verify the principle of operation. (author). refs., figs., tab.

  • The GTO model is based on the Ebers-Moll equation extened to include the three-junction devices and a detailed description of the implementation of the model equation as well as defferent tests are discussed. Problems to be considered for the snubber design, such as voltage spike reduction, maximum GTO anode current, and switching power, were discussed using the calculation model. The macro model is very useful for simulation of GTO circuit and high power circuit switch in high frequency and complex structure.

  • In this paper a high efficiency bidirectional resonant converterfor Vehicle-to-Grid applications (V2G) is proposed. The proposed converter has adopted an LC auxiliary circuit in the third winding of the transformer. With the proposed method full softswitching can be ensured in all switches over a wide range of loadsand the secondary ringing can be removed with no additional snubber or clamp circuitry. In addition, since the proposed resonant converter is able to operate at an almost constant resonant frequencyregardless of the load, CC/CV charge of the battery can be simply implemented with high efficiency. A 3.3 kW bidirectional converter for On-Board Charger of Electric Vehicle is implemented to verify the validity of the proposed method. The experimental results show the high efficiency characteristics of the proposed converter over the wide range of load in both charge and discharge mode. The maximum efficiency of the proposed system was 98.13 % at 2.3 kW during the constant voltage mode charge operation.

  • The emergence of high voltage conversion applications has resulted in a trend of using semiconductor device series associations. Series associations allow for operation at blocking voltages, which are higher than the nominal voltage for each of the semiconductor devices. The main challenge with these topologies is finding a way to guarantee the voltage balance between devices in both blocking and switching transients. Most of the methods that have been proposed to mitigate static and dynamic voltage unbalances result in increased losses within the device. This paper introduces a new series stack topology, where the voltage unbalances are reduced. This in turn, mitigates the switching losses. The proposed topology consists of a circuit that ensures the soft switching of each device, and one auxiliary circuit that allows for switching energy recovery. The principle for the topology operation is presented and experimental tests are performed for two modules. The topology performs excellently for switching transients on each of the devices. The voltage static unbalances were limited to 10%, while the activation/deactivation delay introduced by the lower module IGBT driver takes place in the dynamic unbalances. Thus, the switching losses are reduced by 40%, when compared to hard switching configurations.

  • Proposed electronic ballast circuit for harmonic reduction includes adding lossless snubber circuit to DC-DC converter. To get inverter for changing DC-AC, a lamp has been changed to equivalence resistance in the standard lamp voltage and current data, also inverter circuit has been interpreted by being changed to R, L, C equivalence circuit. Using converted equivalent circuit, the most suitable circuit constant which can satisfy the characteristics of fluorescent lamps has been decided on and finally designed. It could not only eliminate distortion waveform from pulsation frequency in inverter direct side current but also reduce considerably pulsation rate and switching loss by making input current of inverter discontinuous. The validity for the results of this study has been verified through the experiment to measure harmonic occurrence after applying a newly-manufactured product of electronic ballast to 40 W line tube style fluorescent lamps.

  • A topology decreased switching loss and voltage stress by zero voltage switching is presented in this paper. Generally, Switching mode converting productes voltage stress and power losses due to excessive voltage and current. which affect to performance of power supply and reduce overall efficiency of equipments. Virtually, In flyback converter, transient peak voltage and current at switcher are generated by parasitic elements. To solve these problems, present ZVS flyback converter topology applied a auxiliary circuit. Incorporation of auxiliary circuit into a conventional flyback topology serves to reduce power losses and to minimize switching voltage stress. Snubber capacitor in auxiliary circuit serves ZVS state by control voltage variable time at turn on and off of main switch, then reduces voltage stress and power losses. The proposed converter has lossless switching in variable load condition with wide range. A detailed analysis of the circuit is presented and the operation procedure is illustrated. A (50W 100kHz prototype) ZVS flyback converter using a auxiliary circuit is built which shows an efficiency improvement as compared to a conventional hard switching flyback converter.
