This paper presents a new design works for the braking chopper system which is included in the propulsion system of KTX high speed train. Due to the current fed type synchronous motors used in the propulsion system, some different behaviors are shown comparing to the voltage type other chopper systems. Specially this chopper system acts either braking controlling or regenerative power controlling system with a parallel resistive load in the propulsion system. In this paper, an improved simple high power IGBT brake chopper system has proposed which is able to be replaced with an existing complicated GTO chopper system. The analytical approaches to the parallel load type current chopper system and the propper snubber circuits calculation were explained in this paper to control new chopper system. In addition, the thermal resistance of the cooling system for power dissipation of IGBT modules was calculated also. Finally several PC simulations have been done to clarify its availability.

A new high efficiency phase shifted full bridge (PSFB) converter for the power sustaining module of a plasma display panel (PDP) is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter employs a voltage doubler rectifier without an output inductor. Since it has no output inductor, the voltage stresses of the secondary rectifier diodes can be clamped at the output voltage level. No dissipative resistor-capacitor (RC) snubber for rectifier diodes is needed. Therefore, high efficiency, as well as, a low noise output voltage can be realized. Due to the elimination of the large output inductor, it features a simple structure, lower cost, smaller mass and lighter weight. Furthermore, the proposed converter has wide zero voltage switching (ZVS) ranges with low current stresses of the primary switches. Also the resonance between the leakage inductor of the transformer and the capacitor of the voltage doubler cell reduces the current stresses of the rectifier diodes. In this paper, operational principles, an analysis of the proposed converter and experimental results are presented.
In this paper, a high frequency transformer - assisted auxiliary active resonant commutated snubber (HFTA-ARCS) for voltage source soft switching pulse width modulated power conversion circuits is presented. A three phase voltage source type soft switching inverter incorporating HFTA-ARCS circuits in its three bridge legs can reduce current rating of auxiliary active power switches and has sensorless simplified control scheme which any specified boost current management is not required for soft switching. Its operation principle and digital control scheme are described and a practical design method of circuit parameters on this HFTA-ARCS circuit is also introduced on the basis of computer simulation. Moreover, this space voltage vector modulated soft switching inverter system with DSP-based digital control scheme Is discussed and its effectiveness is proved on the basis of performance evaluations. The operating performances of this inverter system are also compared with those of conventional three-phase hard switching inverter under practical conditions of specified parameters.
The conventional Phase-Shift Full-Bridge (PSFB) converter has a serious voltage spike because of the ringing between the leakage inductance of the transformer and the parasitic output capacitance of the secondary side rectifier switches. To overcome this problem, an asynchronous active clamp technique employing an auxiliary DC/DC converter has been proposed. However, an exact analyses for designing the auxiliary DC/DC converter has not been presented. Therefore, the amount of power that is supposed to be handled in the auxiliary DC/DC converter is calculated through a precise mode analyses in this paper. In addition, this paper proposes a lossy snubber circuit with hysteresis characteristics to reduce the burden that the auxiliary DC/DC converter should take during the starting interval. This technique results in optimizing the size of the magnetic component of the auxiliary DC/DC converter. The operational principles and the theoretical analyses are validated through experiments with a 48V-to-30V/15A prototype.
In HVDC thyristor valves, more than 95% of heat loss occurs in snubber resistors and valve reactors. In order to dissipate the heat from the valves and to suppress the electrolytic current, water with a high heat capacity and a low conductivity of less than 0.2 uS/cm must be used as a refrigerant of the heat sink. The cooling parts must also be arranged to reduce the electrolytic current, whereas the pipe that supplies water to the thyristor heat sink must have the same electric potential as the valve. Corrosion is mainly caused by electrochemical reactions and the influence of water quality and leakage current. This paper identifies the refrigerants involved in the ionization, electrical conductivity, and corrosion in HVDC thyristor valves. A method for preventing corrosion is then introduced. The design of the heat sink with an excellent heat radiation is also analyzed in detail.
This paper shows the design of the high voltage capacitor charger which using a modified series parallel resonant converter. The used silicon carbide Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (SiC MOSFET) is proper for the few hundred kHz of high switching frequency to overcome the bulk resonant inductor and snubber capacitors. Furthermore, to increase the amount of the charging current, three phase delta transformer is used as well as the secondary sides are connected in parallel. In this paper, the design procedure of the high voltage capacitor charger is suggested and the output power is verified by the experimental results with the rated resistor load.
Power conversion system must be increased switching frequency in order to achieve a small size, a light weight and a low noise. However, the switches of converter are subjected to high switching power losses and switching stresses. As a result of those, the power system brings on a low efficiency. To improved these, a large number of soft switching topologies included a resonant circuit has been prosed. But these circuits increase number of switch in circuit and complicate sequence of switching operation. In this paper, the authors propose a high power factor and high efficiency DC-DC converter using single-pulse soft switching by partial resonant switching node. The switching devices in a prosed circuit are operated with soft switching by the partial resonant method, that is, Partial Resonant Switch Mode Power Converter. The partial resonant circuit makes use of a inductor using step up and a condenser of loss-less snubber. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of system is high. Also the proposed converter is deemed the most suitable for high power applications where the power switching devices are used. Some simulative results on computer results are included to confirm the validity of the analytical results.

In this paper, a novel prototype of auxiliary switched capacitor assisted voltage source soft switching PWM Single-Ended Push Pull (SEPP) series capacitor compensated load resonant inverter with two auxiliary edge resonant lossless inductor snubbers is proposed and discussed for small scale consumer high-frequency induction heating (IH) appliances. The operation principle of this inverter is described by using switching mode equivalent circuits. The newly developed multi resonant high-frequency inverter using trench gate IGBTs can regulate its output AC power via constant frequency edge-resonant associated soft switching commutation by using an asymmetrical PWM control or duty cycle control scheme. The brand-new consumer IH products which use the newly proposed edge-resonant soft switching PWM-SEPP type series load resonant high-frequency inverters are evaluated using power regulation characteristics, actual efficiency vs. duty cycle and input power vs. actual efficiency characteristics. Their operating performance compared with some conventional soft switching high-frequency inverters for IH appliances is discussed on the basis of simulation and experimental results. The practical effectiveness of the newly proposed soft switching PWM SEPP series load resonant inverter is verified from an application point of view as being suitable for consumer high-frequency IH appliances.
