  • It is essential to reduce stiction between the slider and the disk for super-smooth media such as glass disk for high density recording. We developed a stiction-reduced slider by fabricating mechanical bumps on the air bearing surface of the slider by indentation technique. This paper presents a possibility and concept of Stiction-Free-Slider which can operate on the data zone of a magnetic disk. The slider hat many bumps and their heights are in the tens of nm range. The SFS shows good performance on the data zone. Moreover, little wear of the bumps was observed when the preload was small.

  • A variety of Cyclotella atomus were discovered among the epiphytic diatoms on eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in Korean waters. Cyclotella atomus var. marina has a flat and disc-shaped valve, and is clearly differentiated into a striate marginal zone and a smooth central zone. The valves have a very small diameter ranging from 3.1-3.4 ${\mu}m$. This small diatom does not have any central ornamentation. The marginal striate zone has numerous granules toward the mantle. The valves have five or six marginal fultoportulae with two satellite pores and a single marginal rimoportula.

  • The YBaCuO thick film was deposited by the electrophoresis in the solution with different dimension particles. The morphology of the films deposited from different particles size was compared. The powder made by sol-gel method has the submicron particles, which deposit the most smooth film, and without microcracks after sintering. After sintering of the deposited film, the zone-melting process was carried out in low oxygen partial pressure (100 Pa) and Ag was used as substrate. And the zone-melted YBaCuO was studied by XRD.

  • The microstructures of tungsten films were controlled by changing the sputtering pressure and substrate temperatures during D.C. sputter deposition. As the sputtering pressures were decreased, the sputtered models of the tungsten films were changed from the zone I model to zone T model. The tungsten film having zone T model microstructure shows a resistivity of 10${\times}$10$\^$-6/ $\Omega$-cm and (110) preferred orientation. FBAR with Bragg reflector composed of $SiO_2$and tungsten films having zone T model microstructure shows quality factor, Q$\_$s/, of 494 and K$\_$eff/$\^$2/ of 5.5% due to the high acoustic impedance and the smooth surface.

  • Two colonial ascidians, Eudistoma glaucum and Eudistoma purpureum, are reported for the first time in Korean waters through taxonomic study on ascidians collected from a subtidal zone of Jejudo Island. Eudistoma glaucum is distinguished by opaque green color of colony in living, massive colony with large corona, smooth surface of corona, sparse sand only at the peduncle, zooids in circle, about 8-10 stigmata of 3 stigmata rows and test process. Eudistoma purpureum is distinguished by brilliant, opaque, purple color of colony in living, less lobed colony form, smooth shiny surface, sparse sand only at the basal test, absence of symbionts, zooids in circle, no distinct bulging sphincter in siphon, long atrial siphon and about 20 stigmata of 3 stigmata rows. As a result of this study, four species of the genus Eudistoma are now recorded in Korean fauna.

  • For the past decades, the analytic model for distributed surface roughness has been developed to improve the accuracy of the icing simulation code. However, it remains limitations to validate the developed model and determine the empirical parameters due to the absence of the quantitative experimental data which were focused on the surface state. To this end, the experimental study conducted to analyze the ice covered surface state from a micro-perspective. Above all, the tendency of the smooth zone width which occurs near the stagnation point has been quantitatively analyzed. It is observed that the smooth zone width is increased as growing the ambient temperature and freestream velocity. Next, the characteristics of the ice covered surface under rime and glaze ice have been analyzed. For rime ice conditions, ice elements are developed as the opaque circular corn in the opposite direction of freestream. The height and interval of each circular corn are increased as rising the ambient temperature. For glaze ice conditions, numerous lumps of translucent ice can be observed. This is because the beads formed by gravity concentrate and froze on the lower surface.

  • This paper summarizes the results of a study which has quantified the evolution of the structure of sands adjacent to geomembranes of varying roughness at different stages of shearing. The results show that the structure evolution, and hence shear mechanisms for rounded uniform sands adjacent to geomembranes, are directly influenced by the surface roughness of the geomembranes. For smooth geomembranes, the shear mechanism predominantly involves sliding of sand particles and only affects the sand structure within two particle diameters of the geomembrane. For slightly textured geomembranes, the effects of interlocking and dilation of sand particles extends the zone of evolution to four particles diameters from the interface. For moderately/heavily textured geomembranes, the interlocking and dilation of sand particles is fully developed and results in large dilation in the interfacial zone, which extends up to six particle diameters from the interface. By understanding how the structure of the sand adjacent to geomembranes of different roughness changes during shearing, it may be possible to identify alternative geomembrane roughening procedures and patterns that can lead to more efficient interface designs.

  • Friction welding has many merits such as energy efficiency, simple processing, etc butt difficult to obtain good weld at the welded interface and heat affected zone. To date, the continuum mechanics and fracture mechanics are utilized to analyse stresses at the interface and propagation of cracks. In this study. STS304 and SM15C are selected because they can be differentiated distinctively from metallic point of view and crack can be observed easily. It is ovserved during friction welding that STS304, rotary part is hatter than SH15C, fixed part. The last fracture occurs around the center because the surface of fatigue fracture has smooth regions, due to the separation phenomenon in plastic flows layers and striation dimple pattern.

  • This paper develops a control method that is composed of the proportional control algorithm and the learning algorithm based on the recurrent neural networks (RNN) for the position control of a pneumatic rodless cylinder. The proportional control algorithm is suggested for the modeled pneumatic system, which is obtained easily simplifying the system, and the RNN is suggested for the compensation of the modeling errors and uncertainties of the pneumatic system. In the proportional control, two zones are suggested in the phase plane. One is the transient zone for the smooth tracking and the other is the small movement zone for the accurate position control with eliminating the stick-slip phenomenon. The RNN is connected in parallel with the proportional control for the compensation of modeling errors and frictions, compressibilities, and parameter uncertainties in the pneumatic control system. This paper experimentally verifies the feasibility of the proposed control algorithm for such pneumatic systems.

  • The kriging model, one of the geostatistical models, has been used to evaluate the deep-sea manganese nodule deposits until now. The distribution of the manganese nodule deposits estimated by the model shows the smooth surface as well as much difference from the actual distribution. Subsequently, it estimates the deposit distribution roughly in terms of the limited data of surveyed zone. Therefore, this paper presents the interpretation methodology of the deep-sea manganese nodule deposit distribution by using the fractal model to overcome the problems caused by the geostatistical model. Also, the manganese nodule distributions are interpreted by using the manganese nodule data sampled in the GH82-4 zone, west longitude $165^{\circ}40^{\prime}-169^{\circ}00^{\prime}$, and south latitude $0^{\circ}00^{\prime}-2^{\circ}40^{\prime}$ neighboring Nova-Canton Trough in the Pacific Ocean which was surveyed by the Geological Survey of Japan in 1982.
